“Ruler of the Black Flame” Officially Announced for Japan!

Japan has finally announced its Ruler of the Black Flame set! We first discovered the set’s trademark listing in February and posted that it would feature a Darkness-type Charizard ex in March.

The set will release in Japan on July 28th and feature 108 cards before secret rares.

As posted before, Ruler of the Black Flame will introduce the first Tera Pokemon ex of unusual types. This includes Charizard ex (Darkness), Tyranitar ex (Lightning), and Eiscue ex (Fire).

These “type-shifted” Tera Pokemon ex will use the same Energy as their usual types, but will have a different Weakness to correspond with their shifted types. For example, Charizard ex will be a Darkness card with Fire attack costs and a Grass Weakness (in the TCG, Darkness types are weak to Grass to represent Bug).

We’ll get the set in English as Obsidian Flames in August. (The set was announced last month, which is one of the few times an English set was officially announced before its Japanese equivalent.) Our set will also include July’s eight ex Starter Decks, May’s ex Special Sets, and the 30ish cut cards from Paldea Evolved.

Based on the English set description, we also know the Japanese set will feature a Tera Dragonite ex (Dragon), Tera Greedent ex (Colorless), Tera Vespiquen ex, and Revaroom ex. Like in the video games, many Tera Pokemon are still one of their original types.

Thanks goes to Bangiras and JustInBasil for the translations! (And at 3 AM!)
