Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U

So help me god, if Professor Layton isn't a playable character, I will personally throw Sakurai into the deepest darkest trench and doom him to a life of endless suffering. Or write Nintendo an angry email. Probably the latter.

An Assist Trophy would be much better. At least he would get some love in the game, but his moves would probably be very limited as a character IMO. He's more of the thinking type (although he does participate in sword battles ;p).

If they can make the Wii Fit trainer into a character, I think that they'd have no trouble making the Professor into one. And if I remember correctly, the official Professor Layton twitter account was updated a long while back with his recount of an invitation to "The Grand Smash Brothers Tournament" where he fought against a "blue robot boy, a possessed doll, and a boxer." Seeing as Megaman, who he talked about, has already been confirmed as a character, we might see the Professor too, as well as Geno and Little Mac.

An official Layton twitter account is news to me. I'd like a link to the account/tweet before I just take something like that as fact. Although that does seem likely if it's the case. I certainly wouldn't mind it. The Layton games are certainly winding down.

It was way back in 2009. Long before this game even started being thought up.

I'm not getting why I have seen many people disgusted with the fact Wii Fit Trainer has joined the leagues. I find it hilarious and it kind of confirms that we can expect ANY character from Nintendo to join this time and not just the common popular ones.

I honestly didn't see the wii fit trainer being in. And Jdivinity hit it on the nail there, it can be anything.

Anyone else want the 3DS version? I actually like the cel-shade.

Yeah, I realize that it was from 2009, but like others before me have said, if the Wii Fit Trainer can be added to the roster, then they could easily add anyone.

Wii Fit Trainer is FIT, though. She has the body of a fighter because her entire existence is fitness. Layton's a genius, but I don't see him being so useful in a multi-man fistfight.

Well, that is not a good argument.
Olimar, Game & Watch, and Wario don't match up in that case.
Olimar throws walking plants at people, Game & Watch trolls uses random objects that don't usually damage people (sausage, cowbell, parachute, etc), and Wario isn't physically fit and is a walking stereotype.
So, yeah, Layton's appearance in SSB4 is plausible.

wait a minute... if they're bringing over all the characters from SSBB, does that mean Lucario and Toon Link in these new ones? I mean, 5th and 6th generation are going to be out when this happens (reminds me of what happened with gen 3 not having a pokemon in Brawl, but having the FRLG trainer), and then TL appearing on the Spirit Tracks stage

I haven't played the Layton games, but could Layton actually fend for himself in a fight or has traits that make him resilient? Phoenix Wright is quite canonically durable, which, if I'm not mistaken, was a reason how he could at least somewhat fit into UMVC3...but if Layton can't fend for himself or at least take a punch or 100 bee stings to the eye (Looking at you, Villager) and walk out of that with a somewhat straight face, I don't see how he could fit.
...then again, with WFT, I guess anything is possible here.

Layton had to go to the future to defeat an evil version of himself in a casino in which shots were fired.

He's got this.

Come to think of it. What Link was being shown in the trailer? It certainly wasn't Skyward Sword despite Skyloft being involved. Was it just future proofing?
Also judging by the missile fired, it's most likely going to be Other M Samus -_-

1. Nintendo said (after Skyward Sword's release) that fans liked the realistic graphics of Twilight Princess better than Skyward Sword's colorful palette. Nintendo preferred the SS palette, but they were going to aim to combine the two graphics styles.

2. They said in the Dev Direct that yes, it is Other M Samus.

Layton is actually very good at putting up a fight. He's an accomplished fencer, having taken classes in his youth, and has been called upon to engage in sword fights numerous times so far in the series. He also was involved in a casino gunfight, escaped from a crumbling tower, and took down a giant machine intent on destroying all of London. Not to mention he's got great stamina from running all over the place all the time. So yes, he would be a competent fighter.

Bonus points for Nintendo if he's put in the game and gets to run people over with the Laytonmobile Wariobike-style.

Things are looking better already.
I personally had no complaints about Brawl's gameplay, although this may mostly be due to the fact that I've never played competitively. Honestly, I had more fun with Brawl than I ever had with Melee. But that being said, it is really cool to know that their shifting things closer to Melee style. As I said, I don't care either way but I know a lot of players, most notably the competitive players highly prefer Melee. It's just great to hear that the developers truly care about what the fans want and are focused on making the game nothing but successful.

Also, no tripping is a huge plus. Probably one of the silliest things they have ever added to the game, haha.

I personally don't really mind WFT being in the game; based on the little we've seen of her, I would think her playstyle would be a bit similar to Shiek's (fast, fluid) but as we haven't seen her specials, that's up to debate.

Nintendo has proven time and time again that the popularity of a character has nothing to do with including them in SSB. In addition to Fire Emblem and Earthbound being little-known in America when their main characters were released in SSB, Ice Climbers and Pit were not well known at all-Pit hadn't even had a game since one of the Gameboy variants, and that was his only game (afaik),
