"Braixen, return!" Justin raised his Poké Ball and a beam of blue light shout out towards the Pokémon, returning it back to the safety of the ball. Justin smiled at the ball before placing it back on his belt. "You did a great job today, Braixen, thank you."

On the other side of the battle field, the disgrunted Youngster dug through his pockets and handed Justin his prize money, a handful of coins worth 300P. "You got lucky is all, mister. Shorts are pretty comfy and easy to wear, though, don't you think?"

Justin ruffled the kid's head and then headed back down the route, searching for additional trainers. Braixen and the rest of his Pokémon needed to gain at least a couple more levels before he would be able to challenge the next gym leader. His mind was so wrapped up in contemplating battle strategies and new moves that he didn't even notice the small Fletchling flying towards him until it landed on his shoulder, digging its tiny claws into the padding of his jacket.

"Why hello there, little guy..." Justin slowed down and reached carefully for one of the spare Poké Balls he kept in his bag, but with a short chirp, the tiny robin Pokémon took off again, leaving a piece of paper fluttering to the ground in its wake. With a short sigh, Justin put the Poké Ball back in his bag and reached down for the paper instead.

CONGRATULATIONS! You have been chosen for a very special honour! On a small, private island west of Kalos Route 8, we will be hosting a very large Pokémon Tournament for the best upcoming trainers. You are hereby invited to attend this tournament with a single Pokémon of your choice. The rules are challenging, but the prize is rewarding: P100,000,000.

To accept this invitation, simply come to the beach of Route 8 on Friday morning and transportation will be provided to you. I look forward to making your acquiaintence and enjoying your participation in our grand tournament.

Kind Regards,
-P

Justin stared at the note in shock. A tournament with such a ridiculously huge prize and
he was invited? It was like a dream come true! He shoved the note in his jacket pocket, and raced forward, eager to be on his way to Route 8.

Mysteries of the Forgotten Island:
a character-submission Pokémon tournament

by Artemis

Hello and welcome to this thread! This is a semi-interactive writing experience about a Pokémon Tournament. I will be writing the introduction, conclusion, battles, and the various things that happen between the battles, but all of the Pokémon and their Trainers will be created by you, the PokéBeach community.

If you would like to participate, simply fill out the following form to submit a trainer to the tournament and post it in this thread. The tournament will be limited to 16 trainers. If you'd like some more information that may help you in creating a character and learning more of how this will work, feel free to jump to the PHIPAQ beneath the form.

Code:
[b]Name:[/b] (The name of your Pokémon trainer.)
[b]Class:[/b] (This must be a valid trainer class from the main series of games.)
[b]Home:[/b] (Where your character is from, city/town and region)
[b]Pokémon:[/b] (You only get one, so choose wisely! It can be any Pokémon from any generation, including legendaries but not including Megas; provide a gender, and a nickname if applicable.)
[b]Pokémon's Strength:[/b] (Which stat is its best stat?)
[b]Pokémon's Weakness:[/b] (Which stat is its worst stat?)
[b]Pokémon's Signature Move:[/b] (Your Pokémon's favourite or best move)
[b]Trainer's Appearance:[/b] (What does he or she look like?)
[b]Trainer's History/Backstory:[/b] (Please limit to 1-2 paragraphs.)
[b]Trainer's Favourite Food:[/b] (just one!)
[b]Trainer's Worst Fear:[/b] (dundundun...)
[b]Battle Style:[/b] (Choose one: offensive, defensive, speed, status-changing)

PHIPAQ

Q: What's a PHIPAQ?
A: Since I haven't been asked any questions yet, I can't rightfully have a FAQ, so I have a PHIPAQ instead. It stands for: Potentially Helpful Information Phrased As Questions.

Q: First of all, I saw Kalos/XY/6th Gen references in the introduction story snippet. Is this going to have any XY game spoilers?
A: No. People are allowed to use Kalos Pokémon, so if you don't know all the new 6th Gen Pokémon you might get spoiled in that respect, but there will be no references to anything in the XY storyline.

Q: Alright, so, how does this whole thing work exactly? Are we actualy going to be fighting each other, like an RPG or something?
A: This isn't a game, it's a writing exercise. Once the characters are made, the tournament story will be updated with chapters. Many of those chapters will be a battle between two of the trainers and their Pokémon, ending in a winner. Some chapters will take place between Pokémon battles, or before or after the story. But, it's just writing, no game elements.

Q: If it's not a game, how do you decide who wins?
A: All battles are decided entirely at random. Basically, I roll a dice to determine the winner.

Q: So what's the point of the moves and stats and stuff you mention above?
A: To give some flavour and personality to the trainers and their Pokémon. Just like any story, the more detail there is, the more engaging the story is. No one would want to read a story that just consisted of "Charmander beat Pidgey, Charmander is the winner. Next round." And the more detail that's provided by the people who create the trainers, the better I, as a writer, am able to stay true to the intents of the creator.

Q: If the battle is decided entirely at random, does that mean some trainer with a Caterpie could beat some trainer with an Arceus?
A: Absolutely! Wouldn't that be amusing to read?

Q: If the whole story of this is just trainers fighting each other until one wins, what's the point? That's not much of a plot.
A: There's more to the plot than meets the eye, and much more than just a simple tournament. Not all chapters will be a Pokémon battle, and more of the story will become apparent the further it goes.

Q: Are there any specific rules or guidelines for the creation of trainers?
A: All submitted characters must comply with all Writing Café and general PokéBeach rules. Otherwise, not really, so long as you fill out the entire entry form above. If I have any specific questions or problems with your character, I will ask. Once your name shows in the Opening Post, you'll know your character has been accepted.

Q: Do I have to make all the details about my trainer public?
A: Not necessarily. If there's something about your character you'd like to keep hidden from the public, you're welcome to PM the sekrit details to me. However you still must fill out a public form and submit it, even if the information written on the public form is technically incorrect (for example, someone could choose to have their character secretly be a member of Team Rocket; the public bio would be their "cover" story). However, all Pokémon information must be submitted correctly in public; Pokémon information cannot be secret.

Q: I have an OC trainer that I really super love and have written tonnes of fanfiction about. Can I submit her as a character for the tournament?
A: Sure! Just make sure you provide all the necessary information in the form. However, be warned that when another author writes about a character that you've created, there's a very good chance that they will interpret that character differently than you do. If you're attached to your character and cannot stand to see them lose (after all, there's only one winner, so the odds are NOT in your favour), or to maybe have them written in a way that you may not like, you're probably better off submitting a different character.

Q: Did you draw that lovely trainer girl in the banner, it's awesome!
A: Sadly, no, I can't draw anything aside from derpy dinosaurs and baby dragons (though a friend of mine in college did get one of my baby dragon drawings tattooed on her, so I must be pretty good at those). The trainer image was loving borrowed from Keichan411 on dA.

Q: I have a question about something that's not mentioned in this post, what should I do?!
A: Feel free to post the question in this thread, or PM me if you'd prefer, and I will do my best to answer it.

RE: Mysteries of the Forgotten Island: a character-submission Pokémon tournament (now looking for contestants!)

Hmm...this could actually be fun. I think I might use the main character from my original story to see how he does in this competition.

Name: Anthony (Tony for short)
Class: Pokemon Trainer (if you want, you could instead mention how he was a former Aqua Admin
Home: Littleroot Town
Pokémon: Grovyle, male.
Pokémon's Strength: It is best at speed, but its attack stat is close behind.
Pokémon's Weakness: Defense is its weakest stat for sure.
Pokémon's Signature Move: Leaf Blade!
Trainer's Appearance: Has medium-short, dark-brown hair and is of average height and all that stuff. Nothing special.
Trainer's History/Backstory: Tony grew up poor and without a father (until he found him) and lived with his mother and stepfather. The man abused the both of them, and Tony set off on a journey with his Treecko to both escape his father's abuse and become a powerful trainer. He also joined Team Aqua when he had nowhere to go, met up with a Team Magma Grunt, fell in love, and ran away with her. They're trying to save the world from Team Aqua and Magma at the moment.
Trainer's Favourite Food: Well, he probably likes potatoes.
Trainer's Worst Fear: He's scared of his stepfather, but is really afraid of failing in front of others.
Battle Style: Tony is pure offense; he usually chooses fast-but-frail sweeping Pokemon, like Grovyle, to win for him.
Where was your trainer and what was he or she doing when they got the invitation? Tony was with Alex and her Pokemon when Looker suddenly handed him an invitation that he could not refuse. Rather than saving the world, he promptly decided to join.
How did they get to Route 8? Tony is from Hoenn, but his father is the Petalburg Gym Leader, so all Tony has to do is mention his father's name to get whatever. He and Alex were flown to Cyllage City (where Alex stayed in a hotel), and he and Grovyle went to Route 8 and waited with the others.

RE: Mysteries of the Forgotten Island: a character-submission Pokémon tournament (now looking for contestants!)

You don't need to rent a boat; just show up at Route 8 and transportation wll be provided in the intro. But thanks for being our first sign up; looks great! :D

RE: Mysteries of the Forgotten Island: a character-submission Pokémon tournament (now looking for contestants!)

Thanks! It seems like a creative idea, so hopefully more people will think of something.

Thanks, I hope so too. :D It's not too hard to toss up a quick character, even if you aren't using an already designed character like you are.

RE: Mysteries of the Forgotten Island: a character-submission Pokémon tournament (now looking for contestants!)

I want to use an existing pokemon character. she exists in the games but all the back story would be filled in by me. is that okay?

All right. I'll be submitting later tonight.

RE: Mysteries of the Forgotten Island: a character-submission Pokémon tournament (now looking for contestants!)

Ooh! A contest other than the usual ones? This is gonna be interesting. :D

Name: Kayla (Or, as her friends usually call her, Kay/Kat.)
Spr_HGSS_Lass.png

Class: Lass
Home: She was born in Eterna City, Sinnoh and still lives there.
Pokémon: A female Empoleon nicknamed Sasha
Pokémon's Strength: Sasha excels in Attack and Special Defense.
Pokémon's Weakness: Her most poor stat is Speed, but even that manages to equal her other stats by a feather.
Pokémon's Signature Move: The Empoleon loves to use Drill Peck along with combo moves.
Trainer's Appearance: Kayla usually wears the standard Lass outfit as shown in the Class section; however, she sports a green hue on half of her curly hair and wears deep-blue ribbons in it. She also has a pink fanny pack she carries around with her all the time. And oh, she has blue eyes too.
Trainer's History/Backstory: Kayla began training for Pokemon contests in Eterna when she was just eleven. After getting her first Pokemon, Sasha, she crossed over Mt. Coronet into Hearthome City only to lose her first contest. After the loss, Kay got lost when she trailed off Eterna City and entered the forest next to it and was attacked by Dustox. Fortunately, Sasha evolved into a Prinplup at the right time when everything seemed lost, and Kayla was able to get back home and improve her performance. She's still a tough lass four years later.
Trainer's Favourite Food: Hmm... she likes apple pie?
Trainer's Worst Fear: Kayla isn't afraid to lose, but in truth she doesn't want to get embarrassed in front of an audience. So basically she's slightly fearful of audiences laughing at her.
Battle Style: Defensive, only uses offensive in critical situations
Where was your trainer and what was he or she doing when they got the invitation? How did they get to Route 8? Kayla was walking around the Old Chateau in Eterna Forest one day when a red washing machine suddenly spat out the invitation at her. Afterwards, she simply couldn't resist going to a contest and hopped into a ship from Sunyshore City to Cyllage City.

RE: Mysteries of the Forgotten Island: a character-submission Pokémon tournament (now looking for contestants!)

Name: Edward Hughs
Class: Pokemon Trainer
Home: Anville Town
Pokémon: A rather odd Kecleon in the respect that its stripe is yellow instead of red. The Kecleon is a male, and his nasty temper rears its head when someone calls him "Short", "Scaly" or "Gross". Kecleon is almost never called by name by Ed, only using words such as "Sport", or "Kid" to command him. Not that it would make a difference what the trainer calls him, the Pokemon gets the gist. Always free spirited and hardheaded, the chameleon likes to stay invisible unless called upon. That way he can observe and learn.
Pokémon's Strength: As he remains almost invisible and in foliage all the time, the Kecleon is very specially defensive. Of course, that does not mean his attacks are any less powerful, it just means he likes to stay hidden and far away from his opponent.
Pokémon's Weakness: Kecleon's speed is atrocious when walking, and he requires usage of moves such as Shadow Sneak to jump from place to place quickly.
Pokémon's Signature Move: Shadow Sneak is the move that Kecleon loves using, however he is somewhat partial to Sucker Punch as well. Of course, Shadow Sneak is both a utility and an offensive force to be reckoned with. Shadow Sneak can be used both to dodge attacks and to sneak up and throw a quick Sucker Punch and escape in a blink of an eye.
Trainer's Appearance: Edward Hughs is a white male in his early twenties. He is usually clean-shaven, though sometimes he forgets to shave, leaving his chin coated in a dark stubble. He has short, jet black hair that usually covers the tops of his ears like leaves to a tree. His green eyes are oval-like in shape, and his nose curls from a downward slope outward in a smooth curve. Usually you find a confident or flirtatious smirk on the trainer's face, even in defeat. He usually keeps his hands in his red leather jacket that covers his black dress shirt. His denim pants are worn around the knees and threads are beginning to feather around the heel, due to abrasions around his white sneakers.
Trainer's History/Backstory: Edward Hughs is an Author, and he enjoys his job very much. When he writes, he writes so passionately his first work became a best-seller within a month of it's release. His novel, "Hit Me", was a crime novel, where a detective uncovers a conspiracy between the casinos in Las Vegas to steal money from customers by planting fake players at tables and rigging the cards to be in their favor, thus essentially stealing the money of those who play at the tables. When one of the players cheats and the plant loses, the winner is confronted, robbed and subsequently murdered. It was said in many of the reviews for the book that the level of detail was fascinatingly in-depth, and that the work was incredible. Ed wasn't done there, though, he writes for enjoyment. Now, for his summer vacation, he enjoys the open road and the inspiration that follows, but still looks forward to returning to Anville Town, his calm and warm home.
Trainer's Favourite Food: Meat-lovers Pizza with pineapple and cheese-filled crust.
Trainer's Worst Fear: Rejection from those whom he cares for.
Battle Style: Hit and run.
Where was your trainer and what was he or she doing when they got the invitation? How did they get to Route 8? Ironically, he was very close to the location, as he was in Glittering Cave goofing off enjoying the sights. After the trainer was far into the dark tunnels, a sudden tremor threw the trainer off guard. Dust coated his red jacket and and the subsequent cave-in seemed like it was about to bury the trainer alive. But suddenly, the tremors stopped, but the rocks did not! In fact, they sprouted legs and stood up! Roggenrola. The trainer took a sigh of relief as he knelt down to one in particular. The usual blue stone was painted red, and on it's face was a note. His message received, and quite frankly, jimmies rustled, Edward decided to walk to the beach and find out what all the fuss was about.

RE: Mysteries of the Forgotten Island: a character-submission Pokémon tournament (now looking for contestants!)

Name: Shirley Alexandra Pheimos
Class: Pokemon Trainer
Home: Hearthome City, Sinnoh
Pokémon: Purugly
Pokémon's Strength: Exceptional physical prowess (powerful physical attacks, high stamina, easily weathers attacks labeled as contact moves in the games), very disciplined in battle
Pokémon's Weakness: Low speed (for its species), struggles against special strikes and has almost none of its own other than a weak Shadow Ball and Hyper Beam
Pokémon's Signature Move: Body Slam
Trainer's Appearance:
Trainer's History/Backstory: As a young child, Shirley idolized Johanna, the famous Super Contest star, even going so far as choosing Glameow as her starting Pokemon when she heard the superstar kept one as a pet. A talented Coordinator by nature, Shirley dominated the Sinnoh circuit early and left for Hoenn at age thirteen for a new challenge. After coming in second at the Hoenn Grand Festival, she took a break from Contests and turned her attention towards challenging Gyms. She and her Purugly made quick work of Hoenn's Gym Leaders before losing to Phoebe in the Elite Four. Following this loss, she returned to her native Sinnoh and started making the rounds there before she was approached by a Team Galactic recruiter. She would eventually spend four years with the organization, three of them as one of its top-ranking Commanders.

After the incident at Stark Mountain, and no longer liking what Team Galactic had become, Shirley left the team and headed for Unova, a place where Team Galactic was barely a blip on the people's radar, to begin her Pokemon journey anew. Two-and-a-half years, eight badges, and a Unova League victory later, Shirley has come to Kalos in the hopes that she can continue atoning for the sins she committed as Commander Mars (and catch some of the newly classified Fairy-type Pokemon).
Trainer's Favourite Food: Oatmeal raisin cookies.
Trainer's Worst Fear: Her greatest fear is that her past deeds will haunt her future.
Battle Style: Offensive. Purugly is so bulky that Shirley usually doesn't have to invest in his tactical defense since a lot of weak attacks just glance right off him.
Where was your trainer and what was he or she doing when they got the invitation? How did they get to Route 8? While out fairy hunting on Route 4, Shirley noticed a group of Flabebe huddled around something. After capturing one, the rest scattered, allowing Shirley to see the event invitation they had been huddling around. A hundred million Poke Dollars? Seems too good to be true, she thought, but if it were true, it could do a lot of good. With Purugly in tow, she hopped on her bike and headed towards Cyllage City.

RE: Mysteries of the Forgotten Island: a character-submission Pokémon tournament (now looking for contestants!)

Ooh. Interesting. I definitely think that this will be a good idea. I like the idea of getting characters from many different people as different ideas will come in to play. Although, when I first saw this, I thought it was Roleplaying.

Name: Leon

Class: what Joey is... Young Trainer? Ugh, I'll edit It in in a sec. YOUNGSTER

Home: Snowbelle City, Kalos

Pokémon: A Male Chesnaught, named Theodore

Pokémon's Strength: Theodore has a highly acknowledged power in the attack stat.

Pokémon's Weakness: Sp. Attack.

Pokémon's Signature Move: Shadow Claw (Yes, it can learn Shadow Claw. I can give you a link if you want)

Trainer's Appearance: Leon has sky-blue coloured eyes, short, honey coloured hair, covered by an orange and white cap. He wears an un-buttoned shirt, with a black T-shirt underneath. He wears black trousers SHORTS, and brown boots (I have no fashion sense, obviously).

Trainer's History/Backstory: Leon was abandoned as a child, by his father, a psychic type pokemon user who had moved to Unova. As such, Leon grew up around the Pokemon Village and Wulfric. He was trained, and taught by Wulfric. Leon had used Ice types almost all of his life, and when he had turned fifteen, battled Wulfric. He only wanted one pokemon to use against Wulfric, as he wanted a close bond to the pokemon. He spent every waking day for weeks, searching for a Pokemon in the Pokemon Village, when he had found a Chespin. This Chespin immediately stopped battling him, walked up and hugged Leon. Leon had his partner.

Trainer's Favourite Food: As much as. I want to say nachos, I have to say: TACOS Chicken Parmigiana.

Trainer's Worst Fear: Psychic type pokemon Especially Mr. mime and Jynx

Battle Style: Offensive

Where was your trainer and what was he or she doing when they got the invitation? How did they get to Route 8? Leon was exploring the Wandering Woods, mapping the many complex entrances and exits between area. He heard a large horn sound, and looked up to see a blimp with a banner stating 'Route 9 Pokemon Tournament'. Leon ran towards it, but saw many different pokemon trainers readying themselves for a tournament. Turns out, the blimp had a typo.

I was going off of what my Kalos trainer looks like. I also didn't want to go with the pokemon trainer! due to the generalisation of age in the class 'Pokemon Trainer', so I went with youngster, since... Well, my character is young.

Edit: Actually read the intro with some thinking:

I AM THE DISGRUNTLED YOUNGSTER, AND I WANT REVENGE and my 300 bucks back

Hahaha! :D As awesome as that would be, I have to not allow that, since that wouldn't fit with the established canon of the story, sorry. Great idea though. :p

Actually, never mind, I'm allowing it. I want to see where this goes, should actually be better than what I had in mind. However, you will have to wear shorts, then, since it's already in the story!

RE: Mysteries of the Forgotten Island: a character-submission Pokémon tournament (now looking for contestants!)

One question:

If you don't get the fully established 16 characters, would you allow for others to create more characters, or would you have lets say, 4 characters as filler, made by you?

RE: Mysteries of the Forgotten Island: a character-submission Pokémon tournament (now looking for contestants!)

That would depend on how many characters I *do* get. I'll probably leave this open for a week or so more to gather some more sign-ups, but how I'll proceed really depends where the numbers fall.

If I end up with 8 or less, I'll just do an 8 person tournament instead of 16, since 8 is a nice easy number for tournaments, just as 16 is. I can fill in remaining trainers if necessary. If I get 10 or 12, I'll make a couple battles triple battles. For 9, 11, or 13, I'll add in one character of my own and do the triple battles as necessary. For 14 or 15, I'll just make one or two more characters to fill up the full bracket.

Obviously, the more characters, the longer the story will last, so I hope we get plenty of sign-ups! Feel free to tell your friends to come join. :D The fewer participants I have, the more time will be spent on the filler in between the battles to make sure that everything happens properly.

RE: Mysteries of the Forgotten Island: a character-submission Pokémon tournament (now looking for contestants!)

Awesome, thanks! :D One question: Since your character will be interacting with others, the discussion of her home and past may come up in conversation. There are a few ways I can handle that: make up information myself as appropriate, have your character unwilling to talk much/at all about her home region, or you can tell me a bit more about it (location, name?) either in thread, or via PM. Let me know what you'd prefer. :)
