What cards are legal and how can I join a league?

hey guys, i collected pokemon cards back in elementary school
unfortunately nothing of real value
i was only in on the first 2 sets, base set and fossil.

back in middle school graduated back to magic the gathering, then yugioh when it came out a few following years later.

i still play yugioh casually (exodia)
and a standard magic the gathering deck (friday night magic casually)

i have a bunch of pokemon cards from 1998-2001ish

took a look at the deck lists of the 2012 world championship tournament winning decks and was suprised to see that i have many of the cards that are in those decks (all the energy cards, most of the trainers like switch and various potions)

question 1:
ARE THESE CARDS ALL LEGAL FOR TOURNEMNET PLAY? (FOSSIL AND BASE SET TRAINERS ETC)

question 2:
WHAT FORMAT ARE "LEAGUES" ONLY 1 OF 4 COMIC BOOK STORES IN THE AREA PLAY POKEMON, WHAT DO I HAVE TO HAVE TO JOIN A LEAGUE FOR CASUAL FORMAT PLAY? 60 CARD DECK OF ANY CARDS? OR STANDARD FORMAT ONLY? BLACK/WHITE FORWARD?

Title changed to better reflect your questions. ~SoulWind

RE: collected pokemon cards as a kid, learned how to play recently

1. Nope. It must be from Black and white and forward

2. BW forward Unless it is unlimited, which means it is any card from any set

RE: collected pokemon cards as a kid, learned how to play recently

Any trainer card that has the same name as a card printed in the BW-on sets is legal for tournament play under the new text. Ex: superrod from the old set is legal however you play it with the effect of the new super rod. Pokemon do not follow this rule and you must play yet new versions unless everything on the card is exactly the same as the old version. (Excluding picture and flavor text)

can i still use my energy cards? i think i have a double colorless somewhere.
so it looks like i can build a deck i just need a whole new rotation of pokemon? i can use my old trainers and use them as new/reprinted trainers.

Any basic energy card can be used in competitive play.

Also, you can use your older cards at league.

being specific:
Double colorless energy
basic energys such as fire, water, lightning etc.

and i have all of these:
Base Set

Bill
Clefairy Doll
Computer Search
Defender
Devolution Spray
Energy Retrieval
Energy Removal
Full Heal
Gust of Wind
Impostor Professor Oak
Item Finder
Lass
Maintenance
PlusPower
Pokédex
Pokémon Breeder
Pokémon Center
Pokémon Flute
Pokémon Trader
Potion
Professor Oak
Revive
Scoop Up
Super Energy Removal
Super Potion
Switch

Jungle

Poké Ball

Fossil

Energy Search
Gambler
Mr. Fuji
Mysterious Fossil
Recycle

You can use any basic energy, double colorless and these trainers

recycle
switch
pluspower
poke ball
energy search
full heal
pokedex - now called an item card, so you may need to have new one for tournaments
computer search is now an ace spec - so old version is NOT legal
revive- new version is totally different so old is NOT legal
pokemon center - now a stadium so old card is totally different and NOT tournament legal
energy retrieval totally different so old one is NOT tournament legal
devlution spray- may still be legal, but not sure wording differs, you may just use the new wording and its an item card

Easy button pressed.

That was easy.

If I were you I'd keep the energy cards and sale the rest or try and trade them for newer sets. And just start buying starter decks and booster packs that say Black and White on them somewhere.

I do not think super potion has been remade since base. There is potion old, potion new (now removes 30 damage), and super potion. All are treated as different cards. I actually keep many of my old trainers and energies, you never know when they come back. It also makes for good collection and fun unlimited decks. I always thought bill, double colorless energy, and also copycat would come back. Many did not believe me but now they have come back (some passed again). You never know what will come back.

that thread is very helpful actually.
i was trying to build a tournement version of one of these decks just to start out?

Well, none of those decks are legal any more, since they were built for a HS-On format. PONT, Junk Arm, Dual Ball, Ruins of Alph, Lost Remover, Smeargle, Shaymin, and Celebi have all been rotated. Look in the metagame deck discussion thread for deck ideas: Darkrai or Rayeels is probably your best option for a cost-efficient tournament-worthy deck.

Here, or Pokemon.com.

The current format is BW-PF. That means cards from Black and White, Emerging Powers, Noble Victories, Next Destinies, Dark Explorers. Dragons Exalted, Dragon Vault, Boundaries Crossed, Plasma Storm, and Plasma Freeze are legal, along with all BW promos and any trainers that have been reprinted.
