Since the PWT doesn't support Fairy Types, does that mean Valerie was originally the Normal type Eeveelution trainer? Do Fairy types only exist in Kalos, or are they only recognized there? Can Eevee even evolve into Sylveon in Johto?

[smod]Drohn[/smod]: To prevent confusion I split the discussion into a new thread.

I'd assume so now, since they actually 'discover' the type, instead of it just randomly appearing, and now all places can use it. Although, I wouldn't go trying to evolve my Eevee into Sylveon in my copy of SoulSilver...

RE: The Fairy Type Gym Leader "Valerie" is From Johto?

Is Whitney now a Fairy Type Gym Leader? Her main Pokémon is Fairy type now, so...

Perhaps after each PWT, they review all the types and decided that Fairy wasn't just made up. After RGB, maybe there was another PWT somewhere, then after that they included Steel and Dark types.

False. One is Fairy (Clefairy) but her main isn't (Miltank). So if she were to remain gym leader, it'd still be Normal, but she would have to swap out the Clefairy for something else.

What I think they're going to do, though, is remove her as gym leader and replace her with a new Fairy type gym leader (which would be good anyway since Johto has some of the better Fairy types like Togetic/Togekiss and Azumarill).

They can always make a story of how she switched to training Fairy types. Don't forget that (despite being her debut) Jasmine is a Steel-type Gym Leader but before that she used to train Rock-type. I wouldn't mind seeing Whitney as a Fairy-type Gym Leader and she might even keep Miltank as the only "outsider" (or we get a Fairy cow as an evolution for Miltank!)

Fairy types, are new types introduced in generation VI. So, no! You can't evolve Eevee into Sylveon in Johto. Sylveon is a new evolution to generation VI. HG/SS are 4th gen games remade from gen 2 era. When generation VI showcased the new fairy type, some Pokémons from previous generations had got their types reclassified as fairy, such as Togepi which was origanally normal type, its typing has gotten reclassified as Fairy now! Same thing for Snubbel, Mawile, and Gardevoir.

I know that, silly! I just meant if there's another PWT or Johto remake, would she of changed to Fairy type, or replaced Clefairy as her main Pokémon?

Also, is there a weird energy in Kalos that lets Fairy types exist that's not in any other known regions?

RE: The Fairy Type Gym Leader "Valerie" is From Johto?

Of course you're going to be able to use Fairy types in future iterations of past regions, they don't remove battle mechanics like that. They gave us Dark and Steel types, held items, and abilities in FRLG, it wouldn't be surprising at all to see Fairy types in a future Johto title.

RE: The Fairy Type Gym Leader "Valerie" is From Johto?

Most people have agreed that Whitney becomes a Fairy-type gym leader. Saying that Miltank is her main pokemon is wrong considering her gym is a giant Clefairy. Sure, Miltank is the powerhouse, but that doesn't mean that it's her main one.

RE: The Fairy Type Gym Leader "Valerie" is From Johto?

Well... How about Whitney got changed to a more powerful Gym Leader, or grew out of her crybaby-ness and became an E4 member? (replacing Bruno)

Team:
Granbull
Wigglytuff
Azumarill
Togekiss
Clefable

Post-Game team:
Florges
Mawile
Togekiss
Sylveon
Azumarill
Clefable

Yeah, I remember that some trainers in the Shining Lighthouse, stated that Jasmine was originally a Rock-type gym leader that used to train a Rock-type Pokémon. Obviously she had an Onix which evolved into Steelix. When Jasmine's Pokémon evolved, she has changed her specialty from a Rock-type gym leader, to a Steel-type gym leader.

I wouldn't mind seeing Whitney changing her specialty from a Normal-type gym leader, to a Fairy-type gym leader. We all know that she's fond of cute Pokémons! Anyone remembers that ending from HG/SS, in the rolling credits scene, when Whitney, and her Miltank spot a passing by Togepi, and then Whitney finds this Togepi is cute! Because of its cuteness, Whitney chases that Togepi? Hmmm that figures that she likes Fairy-type Pokémon, even in the games Fairy tale girl trainers state that Fairy-type Pokémons are cute.

Out of a handful of people, that doesn't really say anything.

That is what defines a "main Pokemon" actually, it's the strongest Pokemon in their lineup.

RE: Gym Leaders Evolving Across the Regions?

Not sure how well this fits into the conversation but most, if not all, of Lance's Pokémon were Flying-Something (what's a Dragonair...?) so why is he considered a Dragon specialist? This argument could be used to say that Whitney would change to a Fairy-Type leader, but the reason that Lance is still considered a Dragon user is because of his main Pokémon, Dragonite (the dude had 3 of them), and the fact that most of his Pokémon give off Dragon-like characteristics. Whitney's main Pokémon can be argued of course, however, I believe that it is Miltank. If that isn't the case then I can go back to the Lance argument and say that most of her Pokémon are more Normal-like (which is kinda weird but whatever). Even in the PWT Whitney had mostly Normal-type Pokémon. (And didn't she always have Miltank and not Clefairy?)

Dragonair is a pure Dragon Type and when people see Dragonite, they think of the Dragon typing first.
Gen 1 and 2 had very few Dragon Types, so unless Lance flew to Unova or Hoenn, he's stuck for options.

RE: Gym Leaders Evolving Across the Regions?

I wasn't arguing Lance's options or type specialty I was just comparing him to Whitney and her situation.

Yeah Whitney in the PWT, she used alot of Normal type Pokémons. Even Clefable if I recall? Clefable knows alot of normal type moves, despite having Clefable's type changed in gen VI. Even some normal type moves like "Charm", and "Moonlight" have got their types changed into Fairy-type. The only solution for Whitney to be a Fairy-type gym leader, is either replace her powerhouse Pokémon "Miltank", with a new powerhouse Pokémon, or perhaps giving Miltank a Fairy-type evolution if that's reasonable?

The thing is that Lance and Whitney can't be compared in this discussion. Lance has a "rap sheet" with Dragon-type going as far as his own personal history: coming from Blackthorn, being cousin to Clair and grandson to the Dragon clan elder. Whitney's history is that she started battling a little before the events of G/S/C/HG/SS and that she likes cute Pokémon so there's really no prticular reason for training Normal-type.
I know that you were comparing them based on their main Pokémon but I really don't know whose Pokémon is: Clefairy or Miltank. Miltank is her powerhouse in the games and in those that's what makes it someone's main Pokémon and reflects the type of that someone but the gym is indeed shaped like a Clefairy (perhaps it was easier to create a puzzle with Clefairy!). The anime doesn't help since Clefairy used to hang around outside of its Pkball and usually that means a deep connection but then again Whitney "appeared" alongside a Miltank on that episode with Lyra (it could be that Miltank is from Johto while Clefairy is from Kanto so when promoting the region a native Pokémon is better).
Either way, in the end and due to Whitney's small background I don't see any reasons for not liking or wanting her changing into a Fairy-type trainer.

PS: I was thinking about giving Miltank a Fairy evolution and then I questioned myself: could there be another reclassification of older Pokémon as Fairy? It's a little absurd since why wouldn't the creators just do that in the first place with XY but then again, it's not totally unthinkable. Perhaps there will be a second round of retyping and Mitank will be in it or instead Miltank could be the only one, just like they retcon the power and PP of some moves.

This. Lance was always meant to be a Dragon type trainer, but there were too few Dragon types in existence for him to have a fleshed out team as you couldn't even make a full team of Dragons until 3rd or 4th gen. If you look at his rematch teams when Lance has access to more options, his team is completely made up of Dragons.

No, they're most likely not going to rethink their choices for Fairies, and there's not much reason to give Miltank Fairy except through a Mega Evolution.
