Which raises an interesting point. 10 years ago when we were younger and stuff, who among us raised a fuss over the likes of 'seel' and 'krabby'? Or did we just happily lap it up because 10 years ago, we were all kids who were easier to please? :)

I remember Shinx was one of the Gen IV names I somehow didn't agree with. Even joked with a friend that it sounded like a portmanteau of "shit" and "minx". Looking back though, I find I'm more likely to dislike a pokemon for its design rather than its name (even 10 years ago). Especially since the game has a nickname system so your Oshawott can be "Wotter" or "Lady Gaga" for all we care.

Btw, shouldn't the title of this thread be changed from "Isshu Starter's English Names Revealed!" to "Unova Starter's English Names Revealed!"? Just sayin'. :x
 
I admit, Unova sounds epic. I don't care what people say, they got really creative with Isshu's English name. The starter's English names are all pretty good but I'm not quite sure about Tepig...I'm seriously going to get a nickname for when I get the Fire starter.
 
Hahaha, these names are really funny. I like Snivy out of all of them. Unova sound something you would get from TRON: Legacy or Star Trek.
 
Tepid means moderately warm/lukewarm, so Tepig=Warm pig?
It could also mean Unenthusiastic pig, if you look up the definition of tepid.

So ottaqua would be the best otter/ottowa/aqua name for Miju-er i mean oshawott.
 
I am not very familiar with the new names, the japanes names are better,but they are not bad,
and i don't know how to pronounce Oshawott it's very complicated :?

/ɒʃəwɒt/ or /oʃəwɒt/ is my best guess. The first syllable I'm not certain

They shouldn't have changed Isshu. I like Oshawott, but HATE the other ones. They should have kept pokabu as well.

Isshu region --> Unova region? What's that supposed to mean? Or did NOA had to be sooo self-concetrated to kinda name region after their own country? How lame, really. Isshu would fit it better.

Starter names --> ROFLMAO. Enough said. Worst one is Oshawott, I don't even know how to pronunce it. Tepig sounds like teflon to me, lmao. Pig had to be in. Snivy? Oh God. I bet they stole idea from a fan.

I don't like it, no, no, no.
 
Only name I don't like is Snivy. I can't help but chuckle every time I hear it.

Oshawott = win, though :D
 
Off-topic, but seeing that picture XieRH posted made me realize how much Monozu looks like freaking Boober from Fraggle Rock.

AHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA OSHAWOTT: (Ocean + Water + Otter?) Absolutely ridiculous names. Pokemon JP's running out of ideas for Pokemon designs, and PUSA's running out of English translations for JP names.

Snivy sounds silly, and Tepig looks normal but is pretty...dumb.

Yes I'm whining non-stop about these names, and yes, in a few months, I probably will get used to them. Doesn't mean I'll keep on liking them though. Heh.

I don't really see what the problem is. This is the first generation in Pokemon history that the main region was not designed after an area of Japan, so I think it's completely appropriate for the country it was designed after - the US - to rename the region.
 
Wasn't Orre designed after the arizona desert or something? I don't recall it getting a specialised name.


The truth is, it's completely appropriate for NOA to name the stuff in whatever the way they want. The fact that 99% of names change (even things like Super Ball becoming Great Ball) shows this. Everyone here (myself included) who hates on stuff like this does so purely out of personal dislike, not because it's genuinely bad. If it were genuinely bad, it would be illogical for even 1 single person to like it or be neutral about it.
 
More fans complaining *Waits 3 hours for them to change their minds*. I really love the english logo, the japanese one was good but the english one was just a tiny bit worse, but still good.

I find it funny that this is still called Isshu Starter's English Names Revealed, when it's actually Unova.
 
Does anyone know how Unova is supposed to be pronounced? I've been saying it like "you-no-vuh" but it's probably "uh-no-vuh."
 
I like the names, because they're basically the same as the Japanese ones. Oshawott is gonna take some getting used to. Same as every Water Starter after Squirtle. I've always liked their Japanese names better, somehow.

Also, Snivy's I totally saw coming, because it looks like Snake/Ivy from Powerpuff girls/Powerpuff girls z. Google that.
