“Pokemon TCG Pocket” Immersive Collecting App Coming in 2024!

A new card collecting app called Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket will release for iOS and Android later this year! It was revealed during today’s Pokemon Presents.

The app allows you to open virtual booster packs to collect digital Pokemon cards. You can open two packs per day at no cost. You can also trade cards in the app. It’s classified as a “free-to-start” app.

Some of the cards feature 3D effects, as you can see with this new Charizard ex:

The app also features “immersive cards,” which allows players to dive deeper into a card’s artwork. Here’s an example for this new Pikachu ex:

Pokemon TCG Pocket will feature brand new cards that only appear in the app:

Many of its cards will use real card illustrations from as far back as Base Set. However, the app’s cards will not be the same as the originals; they have completely different stats.

Additionally, players will be able to use the app to engage in quick battles featuring streamlined rules based on the classic Pokemon TCG battle system. The battle mechanics appear to be identical to the My First Battle products from last September. Presumably the app features these simpler battles to entice fans to explore the real TCG.

The app is being developed in collaboration with Creatures and DeNA.

Here are all the cards that have been revealed for the Japanese version of the app:

I wonder if they deeply regret not having in-app purchases in PTCGO and PTCGL (minus code cards in RL products) and are now going to have those in the new game... also wonder when/if they shut down PTCGL, because the new app is acknowledged globally, unlike PTCGL. Might explain why PTCGL has had such a (seemingly) small team.

No, this will not replace Live. This is essentially the Pokemon equivalent of Duel Links, a game made for casual fans with simpler mechanics and a limited card pool. Honestly, really interested in seeing how this game's meta will develop. Many absolutely terrible YGO bulk cards were actually top meta in Duel Links, so I'm curious if the same will happen here.

It unironically might be okay? It seems like it's taking Pokemon TCG to its most basic elements - no energies, no resistances, maybe even no supporters. In short - no engines and making the game actually focused on Pokemon.

On the other hand, it is very clearly aimed at the casual collector market. Sorry, but people collect Pokemon cards to get the real thing in the binder, not to get PNGs on the screen.

There is a Brock card in the trailer, so likely there will be other trainer cards

Maybe gen 1 trainer mechanics(supporters as item cards)? If not, and no engine for drawing for a game that claims to be bare-bones tcg w/ QofL updates, what else can be a realistic engine to get your needs on the bench for the six prizes quicker?

I'm actually eager to try it out and see how a new meta's like with a drastically lowered power level. Been theorycrafting stuff out of the limited pool and I can already tell from a mile away that Greninja's going to be the undisputed BDIF

I don’t think they’ll sunset tcg live. This is just a casual version of it - usually tcg live matches take around 15-20 mins, too long to play when you have short breaks.

With this being mobile only, they can do crazy mechanics like heartstone. I think I’ll stick with real tcg - i like playing in real life, but I’ll give this a shot too.

i was mad confused when this first got announced an hour ago but looking at it now, it makes more sense

with pokemon go and pokemon masters ex being fairly complete mobile projects, the next generation of pokemon mobile games has been going on (starting with pokemon sleep)

this honestly addresses the two biggest concerns about pokemon tcg: scalping and power creep. with it being purely virtual, there aren't accessibility issues like with physical cards with finite physical limitations. and since this is a spinoff / soft reboot, power creep can at least be slightly reset.

it's like if NFTs didn't severely damage the environment and weren't a ponzi scheme lol

They won't. It seems pretty clear that this is designed with its own card pool in mind.
