no, it wont work, u'll discard 1 energy first, and only after that u can search for another energy and attach it to itself, sounds pretty stupid to me....

but with the release of basic darkness energy, will new combo work based around charizard*?
 
A pretty slow one. Without any of the TRR cards, unless there's a release of a Dark energy manipulator, you won't get too far with this idea. You could do a slow Flygon δ idea.

Dark swirl would take 2 turns to power up, if you're using Flygon δ. For 150 damage, and to discard the top 3 cards of the opponents deck is pretty devastating for a 2 turn attack.

Even with the basic energy though, it'd still be difficult powering up.. I don't know.
 
Not many i think.
I know someone who had 504 booster-packs and only got one.
