Step 1: Open up your card scan.
Step 2: Choose your paths tool.

Step 3: Go to View > Zoom > 800%

Step 4: Start clicking around the image, it'll make lines like this:

Step 5: Once you've gone all around the image make sure that there's a bit of space. It should look like this:

Step 6: Go to Select > From Path.

Step 7: Copy and Paste it, in your layers box right click on the floating layer, then choose "new layer".

Step 8: Delete the original layer.

Step 9: Save as .png

Pandamore: yes I know, hold ctrl and drag the line -_- but if you zoom in enough you don't have to do that ^_^

lol gimp a random thing said XD

Whoa, lol. Make sure that you follow each step. The white in the middle is transparent actually. (I think)

That has happened to me occasionally, I think that it has something to do with how you make your paths. Make sure one path line isn't crossed over another.

Yeah that's what happened, they crossed over each other. I actually saw that, they had. I just wanted to see what would happen. x3

Second go.

Wow, thanks for the guide! Now I understand GIMP this much more. x3

Edit: I know this isn't the GIMP help thread, but how do I put it on a transparent background?

SotS: If you didn't save it as an xcf then the white background is merged with the jirachi and it's too late =P

EDIT: I deleted the white around it with the wand tool from your render.
