Can anyone offer me any tips, usually I choose the same Pokémon in the game but I want some outside ideas.

Pokemon I've used that I find reliable:
Any three of the starters (duh)
Fearow (fast, powerful, though a little bit frail)
Raichu (kind of the same as Fearow but with electricity)
Primeape (seriously; it's awesome)
Any of the four trade-evolution Pokemon (Alakazam, Gengar, Machamp, Golem) if you have the ability to evolve them. Mr. Mime kind of suffices as a weaker Alakazam.
Arcanine (hold off at least until Growlithe learns Flamethrower though)
Slowbro (absorbs damage like a champ and isn't too shabby offensively either)
Dodrio (much better equivalent of Fearow)
Exeggutor (it's a pain waiting for Exeggcute to learn the right moves before evolving it, but it's worth it)
Jynx (she doesn't take hits well, but she's fast, fairly strong, and Ice/Psychic is a great offensive combination)
Rhydon (pain in the butt to evolve and those 4x weaknesses are annoying, but Rhydon is amazing aside from that)
Vaporeon (awesome HP stat and nice special attack)
Jolteon (amazing speed and power, defenses leave a little to be desired. basically a Raichu on steroids)
Tauros (if you can manage to catch one, you will NOT regret it)
Lapras (though it's a little late-game, it's good if you don't have a reliable Water and/or Ice type at that point)
As for picking a team of six from those, that'd be up to your personal preference :y I always just go with whatever strikes my fancy at the time.
