Welcome to the March 2022 round of the Create-a-Card!

This month’s theme is One Per Deck.

The TCG’s usual deckbuilding rules stipulate that you’re allowed to play up to four of any given card, basic Energy excepted. However, over the course of its history, we’ve seen several cards with mechanics too powerful to be played in spades — Shining Pokémon, Sparkling Radiant Pokémon, and Prism Stars, to name just a few.

For this round of the contest, you’ll design a Pokémon card with a one-per-deck restriction, analogous to the Prism Star rule or the Radiant Pokémon rule. Your card can be a Prism Star or a Sparkling Pokémon, or another existing mechanic that constrains the card count to one, or a totally new mechanic if that’s what strikes your fancy. However, as usual, it must be a Pokémon, not an Ace Spec or similar mechanic for Trainers or Energy.

Bear in mind that this pushes the boundaries of conventional balancing wisdom! This will likely be a different challenge than many of you are used to. Still, we know that you’re up to the task, and who knows? Maybe you’ll even find room for your creativity to shine within these restrictions. As always, let your imagination run wild!

Registration

  • To sign up, you must reply to the thread below by March 8th at 11:59 pm EST, specifying whether you’re in for the text-based or image-based category. A post like “In for text!” or “In for image!” is sufficient.
    --
  • You may register with a partner and work together on the same card. This way each member can use their different talents and combine their skills, especially if one of you is an artist and the other is a TCG player. (Feel free to post in the thread that you’re looking for a partner if you want one.)
    --
  • We have a total of 15 spaces available for text-based entries and 15 for image-based. If you’ve never done an image-based card before, now is a great time to learn! PokéBeach has many card blanks and guides available for use, and we have a vibrant Discord community willing to help with any questions you might have.

Judging

--------
Text-Based
--------
  1. Creativity/Originality
We’re all tired of effectless attacks! Without images, part of the intrigue with text-based fakes is the creativity of Pokémon Power / Body / Ability / attack effects. Let’s see something cool and new!
    Total: 20 points
    ---
  2. Wording
Proper wording is key in designing any fake card. As official wording has changed many times over the years, try to ensure wording is correct for the era of card you choose. Naturally, grammar and spelling are also taken into consideration.

Text-based fakers may format their entries any way they choose, but for those who are new or would like a guideline to follow, this is a simple formatting guideline you can follow:

    Pokémon – Type – HP50
Stage 1 – Evolves from Pokémon

NO. 000 [Name] Pokémon HT: 1’11” WT: 111.1 lbs.

    Ability: Name
    Ability Effect

    [R][C] Attack 20
    Attack Effect

    Weakness: Fire (x2)
    Resistance: Psychic (-20)
    Retreat: [C] [C] [C]
    Flavor Text

    Total: 15 points
    ---
  3. Believability/Playability
Text-based fakes rely heavily on their believability. Think of your entries as if they were real cards. Try to avoid those 400 HP monsters which do 200 damage for [R]! Proper type (unless Delta Species), Pokédex information, and ballpark HP will also be taken into consideration. We will assume that your card is being created for the current TCG era unless otherwise stated, so if you are making a card for a previous era, you must mention this in your entry post.
    Total: 15 points
Max Points: 50

--------
Image-Based
--------
  1. Creativity/Originality
This is a given. With the proper photo editing tools, let your imagination run wild! Among other things, this can involve innovating new mechanics, envisioning new card interactions, and exploring exciting gameplay potential or other design space.
    Total: 15 points
    ---
  2. Believability/Playability
Believability and playability are both integral to a custom card’s realism. A card’s playability is its power level — try not to be overpowered or underpowered for the era you’re designing in! For believability, proper type (unless Delta Species), Pokédex information, ballpark HP, and so on will be taken into consideration.
    Total: 15 points
    ---
  3. Wording
Proper wording is key in designing any fake card. Try to ensure wording is correct for the era of blank you choose, as card wording has changed many times over the years. Naturally, grammar and spelling are also taken into consideration.
    Total: 10 points
    ---
  4. Fonts and Placement
Correct fonts (which may change era by era) are imperative when creating realistic fakes — even for custom blanks, fonts in line with the convention can go a long way toward making them appear realistic. Placement of text / symbols / etc. is also taken into consideration.
    Total: 5 points
    ---
  5. Aesthetics
Aesthetics is all about how your card looks as a complete whole. Aspects of this category include using creative and appropriate artwork, using neat or custom blanks, and overall having an appealing card creation. Additionally, you may not use existing artwork from the TCG for your cards. If you’d like to use Ken Sugimori stock artwork, you may do so, but it must be transformative in nature.
    Total: 5 points
Max Points: 50

And that’s the point breakdown for this round’s Create-a-Card! @Jabberwock will be judging image-based, and @PMJ will be judging text-based.

General Rules

  • The card you submit must be of a Pokémon — that is, not a Trainer, Energy, or other type of card. Occasionally, we open this up to other types of cards if the month’s theme warrants it, but otherwise it’s impossible to judge Pokémon cards against Trainer cards, since their uses in-game are so different.
    --
  • For those entering image-based, you must include the symbol here on your card (such as the set symbol) or else your entry won’t be accepted. It was designed by Nekoban Ryo, who continually creates resources for the faking world and is a prominent faker himself. In addition, we do not allow any image-based entries that have been made using automatic, online card generators.
    --
  • If you edit your post, you’ll incur a deduction of 2 points from your overall score. Posting your entry again on a different post also deducts 2 points. When you submit, make sure you’re done! If you mess up the tags or have a similar coding disaster, tag or PM me to get it fixed. If you forget to credit someone, do so in a new post instead of editing.
    --
  • Participants who sign up but fail to submit a card by the deadline, if the category is full, will automatically lose 2 points for the next round (similar to losing 2 points for the current round for editing). If the category you have signed up for is full and if you wish to drop out, you must do so with three days remaining before the deadline to avoid the penalty. Continuing to fail to post a submission in future rounds will result in a possible ban from the contest for a couple of months. Please keep a close eye on the deadline.
    --
  • The judges do not give feedback on entries before they are posted. However, you’re encouraged to seek out help from other members of the community! The forums are an acceptable place for this, but you may be able to get faster feedback in the Faking Community Discord server here.
    --
  • Participants should only enter one of the two categories. This is to prevent the potential for an excessive influx of entries for our judges to manage.
    --
  • Artists/illustrators are free to post in this thread, letting participants know that they are available.
    --
  • All entries should meet the forum rules. You should always credit the artist, and never use someone else’s art without their permission — that’s art theft.

Deadline: March 31st (Thu.) 11:59 pm EST

No. 484 Spatial Pokémon HT: 13’09” WT: 740.7lbs.

Ability: Infinity Warp
As long as this Pokémon is on your bench, you may retreat your Pokémon more than once per turn.

[W][W][W] Spatial Vortex 40x
This attack does 40 damage for each Pokémon in play with over 200HP.Discard all energy attached to this Pokémon.

Weakness: Electric (x2)
Resistance: Fire (-30)
Retreat: [C][C]
It is said to live in a gap in the spatial dimension parallel to ours. It appears in mythology.

I wasn't sure if I should've written prism star after palkia but it 'll probably be ok. The 'As long as this Pokémon is on your bench' part came from magikarp CIN with its submerge ability and I wasn't sure if the HP bit in spatial vortex should be capitalised or not. I tried for a good fifteen minutes finding a reference for it and I finally found one: raticate BCR and its super fang attack. There was probably an easier way but that isn't relevant. I am really happy with the way it turned out - even if it is a bit OP. Fingers crossed for a good score :)

This works perfectly for an idea I already had! Please sign me up for image! (Also, why the Buneary? I'm curious now.)

I'm back for CaC! I would like to enter for Text-based. I will announce that my Pokemon is Cubone.

Rare Candy SSH#180 "Choose 1 of your Basic Pokémon in play. If you have a Stage 2 card in your hand that evolves from that Pokémon, put that card onto the Basic Pokémon to evolve it, skipping the Stage 1. You can’t use this card during your first turn or on a Basic Pokémon that was put into play this turn."
Axew BRS#110 "Flip a coin. If heads, search your deck for a Haxorus and put it onto this Axew to evolve it. Then, shuffle your deck."
Lunala UPR#062 "This attack does 20 damage times the amount of Energy attached to all Pokémon."
Appletun EVS#121 "This attack does 70 damage for each Special Energy card attached to your opponent’s Pokémon."

Dusknoir VOID – Psychic – HP110
VOID
Ability: Reaper Summons
Once during your turn, you may choose 1 of your Duskull in play. If you do, search your deck for a Dusknoir and put it onto that Duskull to evolve it. You can’t use this Ability during your first turn or on a Duskull that was put into play this turn.

VOID Spectre:
[C][C] Spectral Hand 70x
This attack does 70 damage for each Special Energy card attached to all Pokémon. (If this Pokémon is in the Lost Zone, your Dusknoir also have this VOID Spectre.)

Weakness: Darkness (x2)
Resistance: Fighting (-30)
Retreat: [C][C][C]
I had come up with the VOID concept back in October, and this is the perfect time to bring it to CaC. Presenting Dusknoir VOID! Pokémon VOID are unique in that they do not give up a Prize card when Knocked Out. They are played from the discard pile like V-UNIONs, and go to the Lost Zone when they are Knocked Out. Pokémon VOID are designed to help out Stage 2 Pokémon, so while they are in the Lost Zone, their VOID Spectre can be used by that Pokémon as well. They also have an attack or Ability designed to bring out the Stage 2 into play.

I like to design Pokémon VOID around an existing Stage 2 line, and in this case, I decided upon Dusknoir. It has had two cards released in the SWSH era, VIV#071 and BRS#062. Both cards have an Ability that interacts with Special Energy, which meant that Dusknoir VOID would as well, so I had to find something that would balance the Special Energy shutdown of VIV#071 and the Special Trans of BRS#062. Spectral Hand came out neatly after that, doing more damage the more Special Energy was on the field, also inspired by Appletun EVS#121's similar effect. Usable with a Double Turbo (or a Twin Energy on Dusknoir), it's easy to use, and can punish decks more reliant on Special Energy with big damage. The Colorless cost makes it easier to use with VIV#071 as well. For getting the Stage 2 Dusknoir into play, I decided upon a Rare Candy from deck effect, reminiscient of CEC#83's Duskull.

As for how this would fit into the current metagame, I think it would have a solid matchup against Single Strike, especially the Gengar VMAX variant, which also plays Hiding D Energy. The tempo of Mew VMAX might be difficult to outpace, but 4 Special Energy on the field isn't difficult to manage with it, and with a Choice Belt, that's an OHKO on a Mew VMAX. That said, Mew VMAX would appreciate playing this as a third Meloetta, though the lack of a Fusion Strike tag would lose out on draw power. But I think a turn 2 with Double Turbo and Elesa's Sparkle for 190/220 is good damage, and the extra body is always helpful, given that it doesn't give up a Prize. Arceus VSTAR is going to depend on the matchup, with the Moltres variant able to give Dusknoir quite a lot of trouble. Duraludon VMAX isn't going to care about BRS#062 that much, but Dusknoir can always put the Special Energy on the Bench and swing with basic Energy. The Ice Rider variant is only going to play Double Turbo, which isn't going to be very relevant damage, given that even with 4 Special Energy on the field and a Choice Belt attached, Dusknoir only hits 310 (I suppose Zigzagoon can fix the math there). But VIV#071 can slow down Arceus's setup, so it's going to depend on which side can set their board up first.

I'm unsure what kind of partner would suit Dusknoir best. I like Necrozma V, but 220/250, while hitting Vs fine, doesn't deal with VSTARs/VMAXes well, but I suppose that's where Dusknoir can clean up. And Horror P Energy can help fix the math a bit to get VSTARs. Whimsicott VSTAR could like the Ability to get Energy on for a big snipe KO to clean up the game. Shadow Rider Calyrex might be the best partner though, as it would greatly help it's Single Strike matchup, while a free body can give extra turns to power up Max Geist.

Overall, I don't see Dusknoir VOID being meta defining, but certainly have niche applications, and give both Dusknoir from the SWSH block some love.

does a V-UNION count for this?
There are reasons to argue either way, but I'm going to say no. While you're only allowed one specific V-UNION in your deck and you can only use it once, you're not really limited to one V-UNION period, which is the intent of the theme.

In addition to that, V-UNIONs severely weaken the constraint needed when deciding what to put on a card. Running out of room? You got 3 more cards' worth of space. Really want two, three, even four abilities? Go right ahead! Even if you devote one attack to Union Gain, there's still so much room to do basically anything you want that the idea of restraining yourself because you don't have space is almost laughable.

It's a good question. And if jabs wants to allow it for image, that's on him. But I'm going to say no for text.

If it makes you feel better, i care more about the second reason than the first.
