Welcome to the January 2024 round of the Create-a-Card!

Happy New Year, everyone! This month’s theme is Level Ball.

HP levels are hardly a constant in the Pokémon TCG: the highest HP on a Base Set card, 120, pales in comparison to the ever-increasing maximum of today. Fewer and fewer playable cards are printed with low HP, and Level Ball, an Item card that searches out a Pokémon with 90 HP or less, just doesn’t get what it used to.

This month, you’ll make a Pokémon card with a printed HP of 90 or less — that is, one that would be searchable with Level Ball! Show us an interesting, playable card that fits within the confines imposed by the low HP limit. You are not restricted to any particular era for this round, so making a card intended for an older era might give you more options than going for a newer era where 90 HP is more restrictive. Despite the title of this theme, however, for balancing purposes, do not assume Level Ball exists in any era except the ones it was actually printed in.

Let us know here or on the Custom Card Community Discord if you have any questions — and, of course, let your imagination run wild!

Registration

  • To sign up, reply to the thread below, specifying which category you wish to enter. A post like “In for text!” or “In for image!” is sufficient. You may enter both categories if you wish.
    --
  • You may register with a partner and work together on the same cards. This way each member can use their different talents and combine their skills, especially if one of you is an artist and the other is a TCG player. (Feel free to post in the thread that you’re looking for a partner if you want one.)
    --
  • We have a total of 15 spaces available for text-based entries and 15 for image-based. If you’ve never done an image-based card before, now is a great time to learn! PokéBeach has many card blanks and guides available for use, and we have a vibrant Discord community willing to help with any questions you might have.

Judging

--------
Text-Based
--------
  1. Creativity/Originality
We’re all tired of effectless attacks! Without images, part of the intrigue with text-based cards is the creativity of their effects. Let’s see something cool and new!
    Total: 20 points
    ---
  2. Wording
Proper wording is key in designing any custom card. As official wording has changed many times over the years, try to ensure wording is correct for the era of card you choose. Naturally, grammar and spelling are also taken into consideration.

Text-based fakers may format their entries any way they choose, but for those who are new or would like a guideline to follow, this is a simple formatting guideline you can follow for a Pokémon:

    Pokémon – Type – HP50
Stage 1 – Evolves from Pokémon

NO. 000 [Name] Pokémon HT: 1’11” WT: 111.1 lbs.

    Ability: Name
    Ability Effect

    [R][C] Attack 20
    Attack Effect

    Weakness: Fire (x2)
    Resistance: Psychic (-20)
    Retreat: [C] [C] [C]
    Flavor Text

    Total: 15 points
    ---
  3. Believability/Playability
Text-based fakes rely heavily on their believability. Think of your entries as if they were real cards. Try to avoid those 400-HP monsters which do 200 damage for [R]! Proper Weakness and Resistance, Pokédex information, and ballpark HP will also be taken into consideration. We will assume that your card is being created for the current TCG era unless otherwise stated, so if you are making a card for a previous era, you must mention this in your entry post.
    Total: 15 points
Max Points: 50

--------
Image-Based
--------
  1. Creativity/Originality
This is a given. With the proper photo editing tools, let your imagination run wild! Among other things, this can involve innovating new mechanics, envisioning new card interactions, and exploring exciting gameplay potential or other design space.
    Total: 15 points
    ---
  2. Believability/Playability
Believability and playability are both integral to a custom card’s realism. A card’s playability is its power level — try not to be overpowered or underpowered for the era you’re designing in! For believability, proper Weakness and Resistance, Pokédex information, ballpark HP, and so on will be taken into consideration.
    Total: 15 points
    ---
  3. Wording
Proper wording is key in designing any custom card. Try to ensure wording is correct for the era of blank you choose, as card wording has changed many times over the years. Naturally, grammar and spelling are also taken into consideration.
    Total: 10 points
    ---
  4. Fonts and Placement
Correct fonts (which may change era by era) are imperative when creating realistic custom cards — even for custom blanks, fonts in line with the convention can go a long way toward making them appear realistic. Placement of text / symbols / etc. is also taken into consideration.
    Total: 5 points
    ---
  5. Aesthetics
Aesthetics is all about how your card looks as a complete whole. Aspects of this category include using creative and appropriate artwork, using neat or custom blanks, and overall having an appealing card creation. Additionally, you may not use existing artwork from the TCG for your cards. If you’d like to use Ken Sugimori stock artwork, you may do so, but it must be transformative in nature.
    Total: 5 points
Max Points: 50

And that’s the point breakdown for this round’s Create-a-Card! @Jabberwock will be judging image-based, and @PMJ will be judging text-based.

General Rules

  • For those entering image-based, you must include one of the the following symbols on your card for it to be accepted: [2017-on symbol by Nekoban Ryo] [SV-on symbol by Jabberwock]. In addition, we do not allow any image-based entries that have been made using automatic, online card generators.
    --
  • If you edit your post, you’ll incur a deduction of 2 points from your overall score. Posting your entry again on a different post also deducts 2 points. When you submit, make sure you’re done! If you mess up the tags or have a similar coding disaster, tag or PM me to get it fixed. If you forget to credit someone, do so in a new post instead of editing.
    --
  • Participants who sign up but fail to submit a card by the deadline, if the category is full, will automatically lose 2 points for the next round (similar to losing 2 points for the current round for editing). If the category you have signed up for is full and if you wish to drop out, you must do so with three days remaining before the deadline to avoid the penalty. Continuing to fail to post a submission in future rounds will result in a possible ban from the contest for a couple of months. Please keep a close eye on the deadline.
    --
  • The judges do not give feedback on entries before they are posted. However, you’re encouraged to seek out help from other members of the community! The forums are an acceptable place for this, but you may be able to get faster feedback in the Custom Card Community Discord server here.
    --
  • Artists/illustrators are free to post in this thread, letting participants know that they are available.
    --
  • All entries should meet the forum rules. You should always credit the artist, and never use someone else’s art without their permission — that’s art theft.
    --
  • Winning entries may be posted to the Custom Card Community’s social media accounts, with context and credit to the card creator(s). [Facebook][Twitter][Instagram][Tumblr]

Deadline: January 31st (Wed.) 11:59 pm EST

Hi, I'm sorry to do this but based on the way Kaleidophoenix and myself were treated by the runner of the Faker's Marathon 6 I'm actually going to abstain from participating. I did not realize it had not only happened to me and I don't want to engage with a community that's headed by someone who acts like that seemingly regularly and not just because he had a bad day or something. My apologies.

PMJ only judges the text division, and I’m guessing that was the person you were referring to, since you mention Kaleidophoenix. PMJ was being consistent with the rules of the contest and posted a follow-up comment recognizing Kaleidophoenix’s other 81 cards, encouraging people to check out his set. PMJ agreed with me that the disqualification was heartbreaking and responded to my alarm gently but firmly, staying consistent to the rules while also agreeing that it was fair to give Kaleidopheonix’s cards a shout-out.

My question would be “Acts like what?” Your message seems to imply that you had cards that you submitted to the contest and that they weren’t included, which makes sense, since I can’t find any cards in the spreadsheet. I assume whatever happened happened on the Discord, since I have no knowledge of it.

I am curious why you deleted your past messages and restricted who can view your profile. Kaleidophoenix has eagerly signed up for both divisions, and there may be people out there who admired your past image fakes and will be disappointed when they come back to find them gone.

Unfortunately, I will not be participating this time round, but I do look forward to seeing everyone's entries.

I know Dungeon made some cards during the marathon on the Discord, but it never seemed like they were ever meant to be submitted to the marathon (they didn’t have the Faker’s Marathon Logo for image fakes + nor posted them in #showcase on discord/the FM6 thread on pokebeach before the hard deadline, which was clearly defined in the marathon rules). So I have no clue whatsoever what they mean in their message in this thread lol

Balanced around the DPPt era, Shedinja LV. X is designed around the gameplay concept of Shedinja itself, something that I see the TCG doesn't give it justice. Shedinja's VG counterpart is a Pokémon that has this "checkmate" kind of gimmick, that if you use Shedinja just in the right moment (Like defeating Pokémon with Fire, Rock, Ghost or Flying type moves, or Status moves that could Burn or Poison it), your opponent can't damage it, and you just win. But the think is, that if you don't have that "checkmate", Shedinja gets defeated with literally everything that could touch it. That's the gimmick I wanted to create.
The DPPt format is basically dominated by the SP Pokémon, strong basic Pokémon that gets a lot of support by Trainer cards and only gave 1 Prize card. So, I wanted to create an anti-meta Pokémon that could punish the overuse of the stronger SP Pokémon.

The elephant in the room, why does Shedinja LV. X doesn't give Shedinja an HP boost? Well, why it should? Shedinja's VG counterpart only has 1 point in its HP stat, so I think it would be against the core concept of the Pokémon that it's LV.X gives it even a +10 HP boost.
The Painful Curse Poké-Power is played around the idea of disrupting your opponent's Active Pokémon or Stadium, ideally a SP Pokémon, while still you could activate the Poké-Power if you discard an Stadium card that was placed by you. The ruiling at the end is placed so you can't just activate the effect for free without placing any counters. You could re-use this Poké-Power if you use healing effects on cards like Potion, Poké-Healer+ or Arceus' Lopunny with its Relaxing Shower Poké-Power, since you only need to remove at least 1 damage counter so you could use it again.
The Wonder Spirit Poké-Body itself is pretty auto-explanatory, immunity to moves from SP Pokémon as long as Shedinja's remaining HP is 10.
Now, why I would use a card that's its main gimmick is 1 damage counter left for a KO? Well, enter Legends Awakened Shedinja's Resent and Supreme Victors Shedinja's Marvel Shell.

LA Shedinja's Resent Poke-Power puts 4 damage counters on the Attacking Pokémon and opponent's Benched Pokémon with the same name as the Attacking Pokémon, if Shedinja gets KO'd. Also, has the move Curse and Deceive, that puts 3 damage counters on the Defending Pokémon and if Shedinja has any damage counters, the Defending Pokémon is now Confused. You can see the clear synergy of this card and the LV. X card, putting damage counters and Confusion on the opponent's board while the "free KO" you could had becomes also a punish with Resent.
SV Shedinja has the Marvel Shell Poké-Body, that is basically immunity to moves from Pokémon that has any Poké-Power or Poké-Body. With Wonder Spirit, you can have an immunity to almost any threatining Pokémon on the meta, literally emulating the gimmick of its VG counterpart of "Oh, you didn't bring a mon with a move to deal with Shedinja? too bad." Again, sounds bonkers, but as well as in the games, literally any move that damages and doesn't gets blocked, it gets the KO. I hope you liked it.

You could also use Shedinja from Supreme Victors to protect the Lv.X from LuxChomp techs like Banette from Platinum, as well as many popular non-SP decks, while doing about the same amount of damage as the other one (minus the confusion).

Is It Ok if I use a website as long as I include the custom symbols?
