Looking at the Gen IV stuff, a small handful I like among the pokemon. Could say the same for Gen V too. Whether or not the pokemon are uninspired or original is up to personal tastes. Gamefreak already gave us a taste of how uninspired they could be when in Gen 1, they took an upside down voltorb and made that its evo, plus making magnemite and diglett evolve into 3 copies of themselves.
Anime wise, Gen IV was draggy. Actually the whole anime is draggy, which is why I only watch choice episodes. You could probably fit everything thus far into 1.5 seasons if you took out fillers.
TCG wise, I quit a decade ago. I have this theory that people play that up till a certain point where it starts to sink in how much cash they really blew on it, and then they leave. For me that was way back when I was 13.
Plus as far as passing off stuff as new thing is concerned, that's fundamentally how the whole franchise rolls anyway. And Gamefreak can get away with it too, because they command a very solid brand loyalty, just like how Apple fans keep coming back for the next iPhone or whatever. I can assure you, 3-4 generations down the road, we'd still be grinding pokemon in the tall grass, fighting the 8 gyms and defeating the villainous team. And the feeling would never get old for most of us.
