Ruling Gengar vs. Bench Shield

Yesterday I played in a States Championship. I was playing gengar, (Fainting spell) and my opponent gave a bench shield to her Shaymin on her bench. I mean that Gengar can hit a bench shielded pokemon with shadow room. But the judge said that it couldn't. Who is right? Me or the judge? (It dosen't matter, I won the game anyway)

Dragonexpert: I think you mean that I was right because Gengar CAN hit a benched pokemon with Bench Shield.

Bench Shield only blocks damage. It doesn't block effects of attacks like damage counters.~Mark

You are correct in assuming that Bench Shield only blocks damage. Shadow Room is not damage; it is an effect of an attack, and Bench Shield will not stop it.
