It seems a common complaint many individuals have about Pokemon is the storyline, and the same process of going through multiple gyms and beating the elite 4.

Personally I've never payed attention to the storyline in anything besdies R/B, where stuff like Team Rocket's cruelty and poor Mr Fuji really got to me. But as a general rule I don't care or pay much attention to the storylines, aside from the Pokemon information and mythos which I find very interesting.

I think I'd care more about the story if it went in a whole new direction and didn't have gyms and an evil organization and such. But personally I'm just more interested in going on an adventure with a team of cool monsters o.o

So how many of you care about the storylines to the point where it's a major factor of your opinion of the games, and for those who do care, what kind of storylines would you like to see?

Believe it or not, I do pay a lot of attention to the stories of the Pokemon games (and sometimes I think they're pretty good). Granted, they aren't exactly the best in terms of total plot and character details (in fact, these are almost completely left blank, save perhaps in side titles like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky and Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia in which the characters actually had some backgrounds and the plots stronger-than-normal themes/ideas), but for what they are, it's probably for the better. Sometimes players (particularly younger ones) find it easier to connect to video game storylines when things like that can be left up to their imagination rather than having stuff set in stone. But, when push comes to shove, it's all about preference. Some people (such as myself) know how to enjoy simpler stories and others don't...at least, that's what I think I'm trying to get at...

I agree completely with Apollo the Incinermyn's post, and I agree with the parts of your post, Tarazuma, about the interest in "the Pokemon information and mythos" and "going on an adventure with a team of cool monsters". I try to focus mainly on the storyline (until it's over, of course), but the teambuilding and mythos aspects are still a huge part of my gaming experience.

I think the simplistic storylines really make getting into the adventuring and the exploring / learning of the information and mythos of the Pokémon easy. If one chooses, one can put the storyline "on the backburner" of their mind while they play, and focus more on the other aspects they enjoy. Since the storyline is so simple, one will still be able to remember what's going on in the plot, even without focusing on the story. I think if it had a more complex storyline one would have to focus on it so they didn't get confused, which would take away from other aspects of the games.

As far as how much the storyline impacts my opinion on the games, it's mostly a minor thing, despite my focus on it at first. Since the storyline is normally very short compared to the time I spend on all of the other aspects of the games, I try to judge a game by the experience after the storyline - the training, exploring, and catching.

The storylines I enjoy the most are the ones that focus on the legendary Pokémon of the regions. (So basically Generation 2 onward.) I'm sure there are many fans who are tired of this kind of storyline, but I don't think it's something I'll tire of any time soon.

I'm not too particularly interested in them. However, ones like XD, Colosseum, and the ranger games do tend to be more important to me.

I like the storylines a lot, especially in MD. I especially love those plots, as the game is rather dry other than the story. I always am bored with a game after I beat the Champion, so the story is really important to me.

I'd care about the storylines a lot more if they were actually present.

I think that there's potential for a good story in a Pokemon game (look at Mystery Dungeon 2), but I doubt they'll ever actually do anything with it.

Hmm, a few mentions of the Mystery Dungeon games, I forgot about those...I wasn't a fan of the gameplay but the storyline was good actually o.o

yeah, I play pokémon more because of the species, although I always like to know what's the basic plot of the games...

of course I care about the stories. I don't think a pokemon game could make it without a story line. granted, they are very hard to come up with (I'm making a pokemon firered hack, we're completely trashing the original story and making our own.). if there was a pokemon game where captured pokemon, battled, and bred and traveled from town to town with the only main parts of the towns being the pokemon center and the pokemart that would be a little boring don't you think? the professor would say "it's dangerous to go alone, take this" :)D) and give you a pokemon and pokedex and pokemon and you would be on your way. getting through the gyms is a goal and goals are parts of stories. I don't know, it would just bother me.

Storylines make RPGs what they are. Try playing a Final Fantasy game without a storyline.
But to answer the question, yes, I do care about the storyline. More than 90% of the content in the game is the storyline.

I care too much for the storylines, actually. xD
I never speed through what the characters say, I pay close attention to what happens in the game, and as many times as I've played through a Pokemon game (Platinum), I'm always glued to the screen waiting to see what'll happen next (even when I already know). And if anyone remembers in Platinum how Giratina jumps out at the screen... it gets me every time. xD

Depends alot on the games.
PMD RRT/BRT I like quite a bit.
Pokemon Colosseum was cool to.
But the main games I am not particularly fond of. It's the story where a boy is reaching for a common goal, the underdog who eventually wins.

For me, whether or not I care much for the storyline depends on the game I'm playing.
Just look at Pokemon Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness.
The storyline for both games are fantastic, and keep me involved in the game.
It's 90% why I play the game, and 90% why I hate Pokemon Battle Revolution xD

I love the storyline of all the Pokemon games I have played.
Storylines are one of the key things in Pokemon and thats why I like them, and Tarazuma I don't like the gameplay in Mystery Dungeon either but I did love the story.

None of the main pokemon games have a story, unless you count "catch 'em all and become Champion" a story. In no game is battling the forces of evil your main objective; it's just something you do on your quest to "catch 'em all and become Champion."

I find this doubly amusing because Mystery Dungeon, Ranger, Colosseum, XD, etc. all have stories. Great stories. Why can't the main games be like this?
