Card of the Day: Clefable
52.jpg

Clefable – Colorless – 90 HP
Stage 1 – Evolves from Clefairy

Ability: Moon Guidance
Flip a coin. If heads, search your deck for a Pokemon that evolves from one of your Pokemon and put it on top of it. (You can evolve Pokemon that were played this turn.) Shuffle your deck afterwards. You may only use this ability once per turn.

[C][C][C] Moon Impact: 50 damage.

Weakness: Fighting (x2)
Resistance: none
Retreat: 1

This card reminds me a bit of Gabite or Sunflora - all of them are Stage 1 techs that can effectively copy themselves onto the field right away (Sunshine Grace another Sunflora to evolve a Sunkern, Dragon Call another Gabite to evolve a Gible, Moon Guidance another Clefable to evolve a Clefairy). I personally think there's a bit of a flaw here in Clefable, because while the other two will perpetually search for a type of Pokemon, Clefable must be used to evolve a Pokemon, and after a certain point in the game, that no longer becomes necessary.

What decks do use evolution? Okay, there's Darkrai/Hydreigon, which is a possible, but those decklists are usually pretty tight to begin with. Empoleon could be a possibility for Clefable, to ensure they'll set up another Empoleon ASAP (which, from what I've seen, they sometimes have trouble doing). Blastoise might also have a use for this, I don't know.

It's a hard card to fit and sometimes even unnecessary to do so, but it's not something to overlook either.

Apparently, Clefable is trying to help you evolve your Pokemon, but what's the point of using Moon Guidance when you can just use a Pokemon Search card and evolve it manually? Furthermore, the whole "You can evolve a Pokemon you JUST put into play" clause will barely make a difference, considering you have no means of evolving Clefairy into Clefable on the first turn anyway. I suppose Empoleon Decks can consider it to fill up Bench space, but it will most likely be salty Catcher bait anyway.

4/10 for Playability.

Clefable notably has to flip to use its power; Gabite and Sunflora do not.

Empoleon can make decent enough use of it, though.

...I completely missed that.

/me puts Clefable in binder and lets it collect dust

I think the priblem with Clefable (aside from the coin flip, of course) is that most Stage 2 decks use a 3-1-3 or a 4-2-4 evolution line. It's not nearly as effective as it would be in a Stage 1 deck like Accelgor. But Accelgor has better options such as Empoleon and Venosaur. I'm not sure if this will see any play, but certainly a fun card, nonetheless.

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with DNA on this one. If it was a straight up evolution, it would definitely be something to try out, but it's a flip which makes it a clunky and inconsistent way of search and evolution. It's not worth the room in evolution decks, which have a hard enough time with deck space anyway.

No, because the stage 2 does not evolve from the basic. The stage 1 evolves from the basic and the stage 2 evolves from the stage 1.

The card has it's uses. You can surprise your opponent by playing a basic and then evolving it right away. There are a few cards that can benefit from this (amoongus and accelgor come to mind). Your opponent will not be able to prepare for that. Unfortunately, the ability is on a coin flip, so you can't count on it. Even if it wasn't, it would require playing more evolutions which only clogs up your deck. Combined with the mediocre stats and below average attack, the cons outweigh the pros of this card.

4/10
