Best DS out right now?

It depends on what matters to you. Each is unique.

Newest, controls, able to play 3DS games = 3DS
Cameras, matte finish, regular DS games = DSi
Basic DS, lightweight = DS lite
I want to look like a dinosaur and carry a rugged brick = Original DS

It's also good to point out you can download DSi Ware games if you buy a DSi or a DSi XL (some of which are simply fantastic, I'm looking at you Shantae and Mighty Flip Champs). Personally, if you don't want to go with the newest 3DS route, I'd suggest at least the DSi so you can experience some small indie games.

dmaster out.

Definitely the 3DS. Can play DS games in addition to 3DS games, it has a Camera/Video Recorder, the ability to put music from your computer on it via. 3DS sound, the 3DS + Dsi shop, has 3D, internet browser (which I use all the time), Street Pass/Spot Pass, the ability to use Netflix/Hulu, plus more and more.

I would say the best thing to go for is an original DS. Assuming this is your first time owning one, you might not like it and there's no reason to buy a 180 dollar DS when you can buy an original for 20 dollars used, to figure out what you like.

3DS is the best if you want to have all the options that the DSi had, plus the ability to play both DS and 3DS games. If you want something that can still play GBA games and DS games (like me), though, try to get a DS Lite if you can. The compact design was easily the best of any of the systems, in my opinion, but the hinges may break if it gets too much use and abuse (so be careful with it).

DS games are played at a different resolution on the 3DS, so if you just want to play DS games, then get a DS Lite. If you want to play 3DS games, get a 3DS. It's all personal preference...with the exception of the DS Phat and the DSi XL, there really isn't a "bad" DS.

Yeah, if you want to start low but still go new and current, go with a DSi. A DS Lite is only needed for GBA compatibility (which includes Pal Park from the 4th Gen games), and the current MSRP is the same as a DSi (unless it was discontinued...). I'd recommend avoiding the DSi XL, merely because the 3DS XL supersedes it if you're willing to pay the cost and deal with not-as-sharp DS games.

Otherwise, I'd recommend going directly for a 3DS or 3DS XL; whichever appeals to you more, as they're mostly identical. The latter won't be out until the 18th, for the record.

It'll happen someday. It was announced last October or so as "Coming soon".

I thought they already had it as a download? Well, I wouldn't be the one to speak to about that since I don't actually use Hulu. :p

Since this thread is about the DS, I want to point out how some people somewhat dislike the 3ds because...some reason.

When I look at Youtube comments of 3DS game trailers, I've seen users ask why some games [like New Super Mario Bros. 2 or Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance] weren't released on the normal DS.

Get a DS lite and a flashcard for homebrew.

Honest answer is honest.

3DS hands down. Personally, all I've ever had was a DS Lite and a 3DS, which I currently have. If you just want to play games, DS/DS Lite is for you. If you want to interact with friends w/o having to buy any games or just want to fiddle around with a camera that has MANY fun features, surf the net, and play both DS and 3DS, get a 3DS.

Now in the immortal style of dmaster: Xcelsior out.

Playing DS games on the 3DS? Would not do. Resolution sucks. There are more great DS games than 3DS games and you can get a DS lite for just a few bucks.

Just comes down to people's (weird) preferences. I know some people that don't even play 3DS games with the 3D on, but it's whatever floats their boat.

When I get my 3DS I'm going to play it with the 3D off. 3D hurts my eyes and makes me nauseous. :<

If you've never had a DS before and would be looking to play a lot of DS games, I'd highly suggest picking up a used DS Lite for cheap. For just playing DS games, it's the cheapest and simplest option, leaving you with more money to spend on getting all the awesome games. :D

There will likely come a time when Nintendo stops making regular DS games and just moves on to 3DS games. Once that point comes, you'll probably want to consider trading up to a 3DS, but unless there are some 3DS games you really want to play, it's not worth it right now.

Best for playing DS/DSi/DSiWare games: DSi/DSi XL
Best for... pretty much everything else: 3DS/3DS XL

That's how it goes.

That point has already been passed, hasn't it? The only DS releases left (that I can think of) are third party games and games that are already completed (Pokémon Typing Adventure, Black 2, White 2). Pretty sure we won't see any more first party DS games.

(Also, considering there's already 10+ great 3DS games out after just a year and a bit - with plenty more coming even before the end of this year - along with all the other amazing improvements, it's definitely worth it. Right now.)

I don't because after a while my eyes start to hurt for some reason. I'd rather keep my eyesight instead of playing 3D.

What about B2W2? :p

But, yeah, the DS market is seriously dwindling, though I don't think it's quite at the point of no return yet. It'll be the Christmas-time releases that decide if it's time for the final nail in the DS's coffin yet or not.
