Magcargo ex from “Crimson Haze”

Slugma and Magcargo ex were just revealed from S5a Crimson Haze! The set will release in Japan on March 22nd. It should combine with April’s Mask of Change to form our Twilight Masquerade set in May.

Slugma – Fire – HP80
Basic Pokémon

[R][C] Hot Magma: 20 damage. Your opponent’s Active Pokémon is now Burned.

Weakness: Water (x2)
Resistance: None
Retreat: 3

Magcargo ex – Fire – HP270
Stage 1 – Evolves from Slugma

Tera: As long as this Pokemon is on your Bench, prevent all damage done to this Pokemon by attacks (both yours and your opponent’s).

[R][C] Hot Magma: 70 damage. Your opponent’s Active Pokémon is now Burned.

[R][R][C] Ground Burn: 140+ damage. Each player discards the top card of their deck. This attack does 140 more damage for each Energy card discarded in this way.

Weakness: Water (x2)
Resistance: None
Retreat: 3

So you can basicaly hit guaranteed 280 at least 4 times? Seems great. What am i missing?
the fact that you're forced on using your supporter for turn on what essentially is a damage booster, that you can only use on the end of your turn before you attack. not being able to use boss's orders or iono during your turn, because you had to use a different supporter to hit more damage, can often be momentum-killing.

also there isn't a lot of fire-type energy acceleration to begin with

poor acceleration? we got magma basin, charizard ex and mela, thats a lot of options. the problem to me is how to guarantee a energy on the topdeck
magma basin is a fine stadium, but you can only use its effect to accelerate one energy per turn (unlike flaaffy or dark patch). it also very easily gets bumped by lost vacuum, other stadiums, etc.

charizard ex only provides a one-time acceleration of energy, and not a consistent energy engine, so you might as well just exclusively use charizard ex.

mela also only provides one extra energy per turn, under more specific conditions and taking up your supporter for turn. it's like if raihan didn't even guarantee you a good card.

right now, your energy acceleration needs to accelerate at minimum 2 extra energy per turn. charizard ex is self explanatory, miraidon ex has generator and flaaffy, chien pao has baxcalibur, gardevoir ex is also self explanatory, and the lost zone engine has mirage gate. any viable stage 1 fire-type ex is going to run into the problem that unless fire-types get great acceleration outside of just charizard ex, it'll 100 times out of 100 be better to just run zard

also, i forgot armarouge, that is another tool, but yea Zard ex and basin are the only actually good fire acceleration. I agree that good acceleration is for circa 2 energies, but there is no card that do this without a combo or fullfilling certain circumstances. Thinking better, the problem here is also the magcargo ex. While Charizard ex is a much better overall card, Goughing Fire ex is a stronger conpanion for early/midgame attacker.
.
@MajesticMewtwo23 about cryptomaniac: setting up a 3 energy-stage 1 attacker spending the supporter to fulfill the attack requirement, sounds pretty bad.

magma basin doesn't solve the issue when you need more outside solutions to get to 3 alongside having a backup attacker with a 1 or 2 cost attack to keep you in the grind game

charizard is a stage 2 and better on it's own

codebreaker exists for your last point

so again, poor acceleration

also mela is just worse raihan for what you're achieving and if you want to guarantee you hit energy on your end instead of gambling you'd need to run something like switching cups over codebreaker and hope you draw into energy, whilst having magma setup aswell

raihan will be retired soon, but yeah, we are overthinking about a bad card haha
just play gouging fire ex on your regular arven+zard deck and you got a much better early/midgame attacker
the only way of cargo ex being playable in my opinion, is if we see further simplier stacking options like the good old swsh oranguru
