Penny, Arven, Jacq, and Other Trainer Cards Revealed from “Scarlet & Violet!”

New and returning Trainer cards have been announced for Japan’s Scarlet ex & Violet ex and its associated “Starter Set ex” decks. You can see the reprints in the following image.

As posted before, Pokemon Tool cards are no longer Item cards. They are a new subcategory of Trainer cards, joining Items, Supporters, and Stadiums. Their new rule box text is a combination of the rules from Item cards and the old Pokemon Tool cards.

Thanks goes to Bangiras for the following translations of the new cards!

Penny – Trainer
Supporter

Return 1 of your Basic Pokemon in play and all cards attached to it to your hand.

You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn.

Jacq – Trainer
Supporter

Search your deck for up to 2 Evolution Pokemon cards, reveal them, and put them in your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn.

Arven – Trainer
Supporter

Search your deck for an Item card and a Pokemon Tool card, reveal them, and put them in your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

You may play only 1 Supporter card during your turn.

Stone Breastplate – Trainer
Tool

Damage done to the [F] Pokemon this card is attached to by your opponent’s Pokemon’s attacks is reduced by 30.

You may play as many Pokemon Tool cards as you like during your turn. Attach a Pokemon Tool to 1 of your Pokemon that doesn’t already have a Pokemon Tool attached.

Electricity Generator – Trainer
Item

Look at the top 5 cards of your deck. Choose up to 2 basic [L] Energy cards and attach them to your Benched [L] Pokemon in any way you like. Then, shuffle the remaining cards into your deck.

You may play as many Item cards as you like during your turn.

Playing Vikavolt V is getting better and better... until rotation at least. Good to know Pikarom will never die in Expanded with the power creep on Lightning.

I am definitely gonna be playing Miraidon ex with that electricity generator card.

I am so excited to see nest ball coming back, so i am guessing our Pokemon search is gonna be nest and ultra ball for rotation.

I am really sad that Koraidon is neglected and only gets a tool that reduces damage while Miraidon get's an item you can play 4 of that can accel energy. But i guess Koraidon's ability accels energy too but still.

penny — situational, but definitely has potential. since scoop-up net is rotating, this could see some play. (also maybe this destroys the theory of “penny’s orders”) 4.5/5
arven — might be good now that items and tools are separated. still a bit underwhelming though. could just use oranguru v. 3/5
jacq — will still prefer capturing aroma, ultra ball and arezu than this. 3/5
stone breastplate — meh. could see use with hisuian decidueye vstar, aerodactyl vstar and koraidon ex. 3/5
electricity generator — could see some use with miraidon ex. don’t see a reason to use this over evs flaaffy though. 4/5

What does the new nest ball read? The old one searched for a basic and puts it on the bench. This one seem to work with grass pokemon?

I believe it's the same one from the Sun and moon tcg era, the one that searches a basic pokemon putting it onto the bench.

Electrogenerator - I kinda like this over Flaaffy yet still more reliable and speedy. Making energy attachments fast enough. 5 Geodudes
Penny - easy 1-of in every deck, if not every deck. Way to heal or retrieve bench sitting basics. 4-5 Geodudes
Boulder Chestplate - ok. 3 Geodudes
Nest Ball - Nice to see it returns. Good ol' Sun & Moon days return. 5 Geodudes
Jacq - buffed Professor Elm's Training Method. 4 Geodudes
Arven - way more sensible since the fact that Items and Tools are in a seperate category. 4 Geodudes

Penny - in most formats this card would be broken. I’m suprised there aren’t many scenarios I would like to use this card. Lumineon is the only sprite pokemon that survives rotation, and that one can shuffle in with the attack. As a utility card? Maybe. 3/5 probably will see play at some point but not release I belive

Jacq - competes with arezu. This should see play in stage 2 ex decks, but thats it. Everything else will play arezu or 4 ultra ball. 2/5 better search exist

Arcen - worse than irida. Irida can search out pyukumuku and other
?
tech cards. Tool cards doesn’t seem to important to pick this card instead. 1.5/5

Stone breastplate - not a flashy effect, but definetly decent. Korraidon has now 260 hp effectivly. With penny you can be very annoying. Hisuian decideueye can have 340 hp effectivly. Just a decent card for fighting decks. 3/5 for fighting decks

Electricity generator - absurd. Didn’t need it. It is max elixir for lightning decks. Will see a ton of succes. Maybe flaafy is no longer needed? 5/5 very strong, if not a bit inconsistent

Electricity Generator - I take back everything positive I said about SV for TCG. Not only is it broken energy acceleration, it's broken, random energy acceleration. Not only every deck now has to compete with an Item that can put you two turns ahead, but there will be a ton of games you will lose because you don't hit your Generators.

If you don’t like it then don’t play it. Without strong decks coming from base set cards nobody would look forward to the tcg. Vanilla cards aren’t the reason why people play the game no matter what people admit. People were already complaining about Terastal Arcanine Ex because it wasn’t broken or strong. Now we get a card that builds a deck archetype and gets people hyped. We also get a counter archetype with koraidon and the new breastplate item.
