More Info on Japan’s 20th Anniversary ‘Base Set’ Reprint Set!

Yesterday I posted that Japan’s September set will contain some reprints from Base Set. Today we have an exclusive look at the set’s sell sheet, which reveals a few more tidbits! Thanks goes to Bangiras for the translation!

CharizardPokemon Card Game XY BREAK Concept Pack 20th Anniversary

What?! Resurrecting the Pokemon TCG Base Set?!

The Pokemon Card Game has been on sale for 20 years! Cards from 20 years ago are being resurrected so that they can be used in the modern format! The Pokemon Card Game was born in October of 1996, and to this date is sold in 74 countries. In total, more than 21.5 billion cards have shipped!

Many cards in this set are aimed at former players! The reprinted cards use the unchanged art from that era. The set is designed to evoke the nostalgia of the era, the fun of opening packs, and the fun of collecting, as well as bringing new surprises!

Base Set Japanese Booster PackThe set’s booster package artwork is a completely redrawn version of the original Base Set‘s booster pack artwork! The set’s lineup mostly follows the composition of Base Set.

As for current players, many new Mega Evolution Pokemon, Pokemon-EX, BREAK Evolution Pokemon, and Trainers are also included!

There are lots of cards that current players will want! All categories of Pokemon are included, and can be used to power up all sorts of decks!

Each booster pack contains 10 cards per pack, including one guaranteed holo. Each booster box has 15 packs. There will be 87 cards + ???.

As posted a couple of times, this set will likely become our November set in the United States and internationally. Then we should get our first Sun and Moon set in February.

They are teasing me. I just want to know what reprinted mons they are picking. Energy Trans Venusaur means I dont have to play Golduck Break and makes my decks more consistent with Forest.

I just want to know more!

While I think it's amazing that we're getting more nostalgia filled bliss for the 20th, the one thing I'm slightly worried about for this set is that it may be a little too much nostalgic. I hope in this set they still do treat it as a main series set and set up new top tier decks, especially now when a lot of the previous top tier decks are either being rotated or losing crucial cards. (I feel like every set should have some sort of deck that performs well, BREAKthrough had YZG, BREAKpoint had Greninja and Trev Break, and Fates Collide had... not much, but rather good tech cards for other decks.) Again, I love that this is a base set reprint, but I hope they don't focus too much on Base Set and give us fresh cards and ideas without falling back on the Ultra Rares and Trainers. Can we finally get @crystal_pidgeot his M Pidgeot-EX already? Or Venasur, Blastoise, and Charizard BREAK? Because, again: this is a main series set, not a sub-set or mini-set like Generations or Radiant Collection, as such it should be treated like one instead of being Base Set modified for the current era. Those are just my thoughts thoug, still love the idea of getting a Base Set reprint set though. Also where's Blastoise on that pack art?

I dont play the TCG, but I have all my old cards from my childhood and some of the newer set of cards that I have bought over the years whenever I would get that itch of opening packs, cuz I just love that part so much.
So if they do release a booster box for this set, I will prob pay for it.

Computer Search? Item Finder?? WEEDLE (69/102)?!

PROF OAK AS A NON SUPPORTER??
(jk about that one) (not Weedle)

The cards are pretty black and white with how they'd affect the metagame -- either they'd be useless or break it :p. Curious to see how they handle it.

EDIT: Also it sort of strikes me like they're going to cram all the remaining Megas into this set to clear the slate before Sun and Moon. Maybe they'll change the Mega mechanic? I think it's direly in need of it considering they can't even dent the meta right now, and they're (Megas) supposed to be soOoOoOo cool.

Very excited for this one. There's a ton of potential for cards with Base Set art and concepts, especially if they allow some minor tweaking to account for changes to the game since the 90s.

Hoping against hope for a FA Moltres to join Zapdos and Articuno from Generations as well!

Toxic Gases Muk... Oh wait - that was from the Fossil Set.

I wonder if this set could also create trainer reprints that coincide with the theme. For instance, Clefairy Doll to bring Back Robo Substitute, a (Super) Scoop-Up, a Computer Search/Itemfinder as an Ace Spec, a Pokemon Trader for Pokemon Communication, etc. I wouldn't mind all that...

Also, given how the new set tries to 'modernize' the old, I'm curious how they'll bring the old threats back... It would be hilarious if, for instance, they make a Hitmonchan card for this format with an attack called 'Ultra Jab' - a move that does 50 Damage with a single fighting energy!

I'm shocked that no one has mentioned the possibility of a Charizard reprint. Seeing that art again would bring back memories.

I recall reading somewhere (probably actually an article on Pokebeach LOL) that BREAKs are only for Pokemon who don't have a Mega and won't be getting one for the foreseeable future.

So no BREAK Kanto starters, sorry.

can't wait to see the base set Hitmonchan. Electabuzz. Blastoise. Chariard. and Venusaur.

As for trainers, i wouldn't mind seeing Lass again. a far more balanced version of Ghetsis.

Analysis: If they want to revive the "Base Set" thing, that means the HP will be cap to 120. Come on! Players want 150-200 on the damage!

I think we can safely assume the Abra line won't be reprinted since they're still spineless about making Kadabra cards.

Although I fully expect the starters, Pikachu and Raichu, and Mewtwo, Chansey and Zapdos at least

Once I see it in writing for America, i'll believe it. Though I've been saying we will see a reprint set at the end of the year for a while now, I could see these cards and some cards from CP5 also being in the set, besides the obvious reprints for cards from sets we're about to lose.

Somehow, I just don't get my hopes up that we'll get any really good cards or that we'll be seeing any use from the older Pokemon, due to their very low HP, pitiful damage and high cost. Any we certainly wont see a Professor Oak unless he is changed into a supporter, which will suck. I also doubt we'll see the return of Computer Search since ACE SPEC cards seems to have died off, unless they suddenly decide they aren't OP anymore and bring them back as normal cards, which I doubt.

I'm not going to get my hopes up too high about it until the time comes.

Ok after months of lurking at Pokebeach daily, I have finally signed up just to reply to this :p

And I know it says "Base Set" but if people are mentioning they wish for a full-art Moltres, then I'm gonna hope it includes not just cards from Base Set, but also from Jungle and Fossil. :D

I'd love to see the original 3 starters reprinted! :D
Their attacks (specially the stage 2's) need serious overhaul though

    Alakazam's damage-transferring ability would be epic :O
Imagine that with Max Potion, Super Scoop Up, or AZ!

Will Clefairy still be rare and have that awesome Metronome attack (similar to M-Gengar-EX's and Zoroark-BREAK's attack) and will it be Fairy type now, together with Clefable? And speaking of Fairy types, there's Mr. Mime with that "I only take 20 damage or nothing" ability.

One of the best cards from back in the day was Gyarados from that Overgrowth theme deck. :D :D :D
The art on that card was just EPIC! The attacks need upgrades though :p

Hitmonchan was cool then, but a good upgrade to its first attack (Jab, F, 20 damage) would be added effect like Latios-EX's Fast Raid attack, wherein, if you play first, you can hit the opponent anyway. :p

Hopefully there will be a card similar to Fossil Researcher, but for the Gen 1 Fossils.
And Supporter cards of Brock, Misty, and the other gym leaders! :D

I think people are missing that they only mentioned they are using the art: that doesn't mean the exact card from the original base set. Let me give an example of what they might do with this:

The Base Set had a Lass Trainer card that shuffled both players' Trainer Cards back into their deck. Doubt we'll see that effect hit standard even as a supporter limited to items as that would be a pretty cruel effect BUT we have had Lass's Special Printed in Fates Collide. What I'm expecting to see is a reprint of Lass's Special with the original Lass Art.

Chances are we MIGHT see some cards similar to the originals but I expect there to be updated versions or possible that it might be a completely new card with preexisting art. Take advantage of the Breeder and Trader to make new Supporters effects possibly with a spin to them.. Make an Oak not like the others maybe a Tutor for a Pokemon and a basic energy Or maybe have another Supporter like Giovanni's Scheme with multiple options there needs to be more of those.

Also side note on Giovanni make a print of 'Giovanni's Scheme' that with the art from 'The Boss's Way'. Also 'Misty's Determination' use the art on 'Misty's Wrath'
