It is a basic card, so its own ability (to block other abilities) can be shut down by Silent Lab, which wouldn't affect the Greninja line. It does mean you will be forced to counter it though, I imagine a lot of people like me who hate playing Greninja will be using it!

Another test is to get Blaziken swapped for Flareon it is less consistent but allows you to pull energy from the discard for the mid game.

It is always worth testing variations out. I might also be tempted to try swapping scorched earth for skyfield if running hoopa.

I'd be tempted to start with a Hoopa-ex, I love Volcanion but it suffers from being pretty slow. Getting Hoopa out allows you to pick up the Volc-Exs and get even the basic attacks running at 90-120 early

Ones that spring to mind: Talonflame/bunny/slowking - denial/mill deck Regice decks Typhlosion - with no EX you are going to want to hit early on decks like Yanmega then add in the 3 fire attack to finish off
