Hey guys! I've been trying for a long time to learn japanese, but I just haven't figured it out yet. I'm stuck now. I figured I would ask all of you, as pokebeach, what is the most effective way to learn japanese?

Please don't respond "Go to your nearest school" because the only school that teaches Japanese in Vegas (that I know of) is a middle school, and I'm not going back to middle school just for japanese. I've looked, so I don't want any of these types of comments.

-_-
I'm in High School TYVM -_-

That reminds me, please take me being a student at the best high school in the state ATM. THAT MEANS LOTS OF HOMEWORK AND LITTLE FREETIME!!! I'd rather not have any programs that take hours out of your days.

Well, Rosetta Stone is a good option, although you can't believe everything you hear, it is a bit overhyped.

It's really quite easy if you can just surround your self in the language kinda. Count in Japanese to yourself as you do push-ups in Physical Education. Challenge yourself by attempting to translate small things into or from Japanese. Say various food items in Japanese as you walk by them in the supermarket. Listen to Japanese songs to get a feel for the sounds and accents.

Do you have a friend learning the language as well? Even better. Write notes to each other practicing Kana and Kanji. You'll also improve your reading speed. Watch Japanese shows with English subtitles. Watch English shows with Japanses subtitles. Anything!

You'll be surprised at how much you pick up.

Doing that ATM...

I never really thought of that... hm...

Responded... Thanks a lot! ;p

I can't really tell you how to learn (Rosetta Stone is pretty much the biggie anyway), but if I ever want practice with it, you could always watch subbed animes. I'm not even trying to learn Japanese and I know quite a few phrases from watching them.

EDIT: It really depends on your goal whether or not you should sub them. If you're testing your skill, then don't sub them. If you are just trying to get familiar with the language, sub it. I suggest you watch the subbed first and then do without it.

I'd move there if I were desperate. Forced learning ftw.

dmaster out.

DD= Whaa?

Where did you hear this from? I can't imagine why it would be bad... =O

I spy wapane--

My suggestion is to look for out-of-school classes. They exist, especially if you live someplace big like Vegas. I know somebody who took out-of-school Japanese once. She was a massive wapaneser though. Scaaaaary.

Don't try to learn it now then. You won't learn a language watching anime or listening to Japanese music for 30 minutes a day. You have to commit to it. Do you remmeber how long it took you to learn English? It will take you about the same time or even longer to learn Japanese.

Wait until college or some other later time in your life to learn it.

Got FireFox?
I believe there is an addon called Kanji-Lish, or something like that...
It helps.

I bought a book entitled "Japanese for Everyone"..

It's supposed to teach you japanese in 6 weeks...

but I doubt you will find that book near your place...

Try searching at eBay for self-help books...

You can do what I do.
Get a Japanese-English dictionary.

Look up the english word...then say it's Japanese name.

If you own a DS you could try searching the stores for a game called My Japanese Coach.
My friend is using it ATM and I think seh's doing fine.
I'm not sure if the result would be good since I'm not using it but it's just a suggestion.

*Feels the need to add some input*

Well... Okay. First off I am also learning Japanese but I am doing this through self teaching. From experience... Rosetta Stone is okay but don't rely on it, like people say, it's too overhyped.

Now, learning from subbed Anime is bad. I'll tell you why. Subbers don't actually translate certain phrases correctly, a number of times I have heard something on screen that I can understand but had come up differently in english text. An example of this is where someone said "Hayaku!" which roughly translates to hurry in our language, but the text at the bottom read "Come on!" Sometimes it is correct but the majority I hear of it, is not.

Books can be very useful but it depends on the books that you pick up, not only that but you need to put some dedication into learning the language. Like someone stated earlier, listening to Japanese music for 30 minutes everyday isn't going to make you pick it up. If you buy a book, you'll have to be looking at it everyday.

Overall, learning Japanese words isn't the problem. Speaking in Japanese and forming the right sentences is. Japanese have their particles switched, so to say "I eat bread" in Japan you would say "Watashi wa pano tabemasu" "I bread eat" because of the way the lanuguage flows.

Basically, taking a class would be the best option but like me, if they're not any close enough then it seems books and a hard and dedicated study would be the answer. Alternitavely, you could wait until your in College. In my case I'm attempting to get a course in University at the moment, so courses are around it seems, even if they're difficult to get to.

I hope this helped.

But remember you usualy pick up new lanuguages better the younger you are.

I say you should befriend someone who speaks japenese over the internet and get them to tutor you.

Study everything! Don't look for one or two resources and expect to learn everything from them. When someone asks which book, CD, or computer program is best to learn from, I say, "All of them!" I learned something from every Japanese language-related book I've ever read. Read a lot and you'll learn a lot. I like the book "Rocket Japanese" by Sayaka Matsuura, which gives a nice overview of the language with lots of examples from real manga.
