Can we use Hidden Power over Fire Blast.
Nope, nothing on that set can be changed.

I'll post my team here when I finish testing tomorrow morning.

RE: Teambuilding Challenge #1 (Set Posted; Teams are due Dec. 28)

I'll finish my team later today (Sure wish it were a Timid Volcarona!), but yes I think an extension would be nice due to low numbers of submissions. Maybe a PM to everyone as a reminder wouldn't go amiss either.

EDIT: I'm terrible. My original Gym team featured the combination of Bug/Flying, and it used more or less the same Volcarona, so I'm just going to post that as it was kinda successful (better than my current Gym team at any rate :p).

EVs: 80 HP / 252 SAtk / 176 Spd
Mild Nature (+SAtk, -Def)

Some of the sets are a bit strange so let me explain

Dragonite needs to be special because otherwise I am destroyed by opposing Rotom-W, and it can burn me so physical sets aren't really cutting it. I used to use White Herb as an unusual yet effective defence against Deoxys-S leads, but since the ban Life Orb is the superior option.

Rotom-W has Toxic over Will-o-wisp because Gastrodon can be a very tough Poke to deal with otherwise, and I want to limit the lifetime of Lati@s as much as I can. Useful against enemy Rotom-W to some extent but they don't stay in long anyway so Toxic hardly builds up.

Gee I never did see that Scizor set before

Gliscor needs Protect because otherwise I am dead to Terrakion, it absolutely needs that extra recovery. Swords Dance is so Gliscor actually does something and it's useful to muscle through SubRoost Dragonite sets which I otherwise lose to (Stealth Rock is incredibly hard to work into this team). Might increase its speed to 280 like the good old days because Lucario is becoming more popular but hnng that missing bulk.

Xatu has a nice set. It has lots of fun with Ferrothorn. Might need to try stupid items because Tyranitar being one of the premier Stealth Rock users gives Xatu a hard time. Mamoswine also but he's less common.

Volcarona is a pretty cool dude. Tried ChestoRest but it's so bad in the current metagame. I use Hurricane as my third attack because it smacks stuff around pretty hard and means that Volcarona can handle rain teams a lot better. OHKOing Terrakion makes me feel fuzzy inside. Seriously don't use ChestoRest what a rofl set.

This got me to around 1350 ish on Smogon's ladder so it's not exactly terrible, but there are some key issues (no SR, Rain Stall a problem) that are tricky to work around

RE: Teambuilding Challenge #1 (Set Posted; Teams are due Jan. 6)

This will be my team post, expect me to edit it later with the team. Just a little busy atm. 3-5 days?

Giving myself a time extension ;D

RE: Teambuilding Challenge #1 (Set Posted; Teams are due Jan. 6)

Here's my team:

Politoed (F) @Choice Specs
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SDef/252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
-Hydro Pump
-Ice Beam
-Focus Blast
-Hidden Power (Grass)

Standard Specs Politoed for tearing holes in anything not named Blissey or Chansey granted that you predict correctly. It helps Volcarona sweep by setting up the rain to make Hurricane 100% accurate, and weakening foes.

Volcarona (F) @Leftovers
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SDef/252 Spe)
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
-Quiver Dance
-Bug Buzz
-Fire Blast
-Hurricane

The star of the show. Despite being a fire type, its great on rain teams because it has a 4x resistance to grass, a weakness of most water types, and it gets 100% accurate Hurricane in rain. Combine that with Quiver Dance, arguably the best stat-upping move in the game, and Volcarona's excellent Special Attack and usable speed, and now it is a potent threat. Much of the team is focused around helping Volcarona sweep.

Ferrothorn (F) @Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP/88 Def/168 SDef
Impish Nature (+ Def, -SAtk)
-Spikes
-Protect
-Thunder Wave
-Power Whip

Ferrothorn is extremely useful. Rain weakens its biggest weakness, fire, and in turn Ferrothorn resists and powered up water type moves the opponent may have. It helps Volcarona sweep by setting up Spikes to make enemy Pokemon easier to KO, and it can use Thunder Wave to make sure Volcarona outspeeds its enemies. Protect lets it scout and gain more Leftovers recover, and Power Whip prevents it from being complete Taunt fodder.

Starmie @Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SDef/252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -Atk)
-Surf
-Thunder
-Ice Beam
-Rapid Spin

Starmie is a great Pokemon. With Natural Cure, it can sponge status conditions, and with double STAB Surf (in the rain) as well as 100% accurate Thunder and Ice Beam to round out the coverage, it can really hurt teams late game. It helps Volcarona sweep by Rapid Spinning away Spikes and Stealth Rock, which otherwise greatly hinder Volcarona's ability to switch in.

Terrakion @Choice Scarf
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk/4 SDef/252 Spe
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
-Stone Edge
-Close Combat
-Earthquake
-Aerial Ace

Terrakion may seem like an odd choice on a rain team due to its grass and water weaknesses, but it is very useful. It not only checks opposing Volcarona with ease, but it also helps Volcarona sweep in many ways. Terrakion can seriously dent or OHKO outright all of Volcarona's counters (namely Blissey, Chansey, Heatran, Dragonite, and Gyarados). It can also attract grass type attacks, which Volcarona can switch in on easily,

Jirachi @Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP /224 SpD /32 Spe
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk
-Wish
-Stealth Rock
-Body Slam
-Iron head

Jirachi is another great Pokemon for rain teams, with one of its two weaknesses being negated by rain, and resisting grass attacks. It helps Volcarona sweep by using Stealth Rock to wear down Volcarona's checks and counters, using Body Slam to paralyze foes so Volcarona can set up and outspeed them, and it can use Wish and then switch to Volcarona so Volcarona gains 202 HP back, greatly increasing its longevity.

RE: Teambuilding Challenge #1 (Set Posted; Teams are due Jan. 6)

Welp, here's mine.

Volcarona @ Leftovers
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
-Quiver Dance
-Bug Buzz
-Hurricane
-Fire Blast

Politoed (M) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Perish Song
- Focus Blast

Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Trait: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 SAtk
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam
- Recover
- Toxic

Volcarona attracts Water-type moves a lot, and Gastrodon loves them. In return, the Grass-type moves Gastrodon hates are easily taken by Volcarona.

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Trait: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SDef
Sassy Nature (+SDef, -Spe)
- Spikes
- Leech Seed
- Power Whip
- Thunder Wave

Sets up hazards, which is awesome and stuff. Hard to kill in rain and all that awesome stuff.

Slowbro @ Rocky Helmet
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
IVs: 29 Spe
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spe)
- Scald
- Psychic
- Toxic
- Slack Off

Slow enough that Conkeldurr outruns it (so Payback won't do a lot). Really useful for Terrakion, who does quite a number to this team.

Hitmontop @ Leftovers
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Atk
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Rapid Spin
- Sucker Punch
- Mach Punch
- Toxic

Spins away those terrible entry hazards that clip the wings of our wonderful moth.
