Shadow Pokemon ~ A Text-based Fake Collection (Shadow Luxray)

First, a short introduction. I'm Xdog, a long time player of both the Pokemon video games as well as the TCG. I was pretty active on Pokebeach a few years ago but I have been away from the forums. Now I'm back for a project. I'm working on a collection of fake cards/sets based on Pokemon Colosseum and XD for the XY era. Those games have always been my favorites in the series but they have never had a TCG adaptation.

The biggest feature of the project is the inclusion of Shadow Pokemon. They will operate very similarly to regular Pokemon, but there will be a few differences.

  • Shadow Pokemon are treated as different Pokemon from their non-shadow counterparts. Shadow Pokemon cannot evolve into non-shadow Pokemon and vice versa. Also, 4 copies of a Shadow Pokemon can be included in the same deck as 4 copies of the non-shadow counterpart.
  • Shadow Pokemon generally do not have any statistic differences from their non-shadow counterparts like type, HP, retreat cost, etc. However, Shadow Pokemon attacks try to capture the aggressive nature of the Pokemon.
  • Many attacks, abilities, energy, and Trainer Cards will feature effects that only work/don't work on Shadow Pokemon.
  • Unlike the video games, Shadow Pokemon still evolve.

I plan on grouping the cards into a few sets. The obvious dichotomy would be to split them into Colosseum and XD. That's what I've done, but it will very likely change. With two sets of most Pokemon, the sets will get very large. Splitting it up further will allow for more reasonably sized sets. Also, not having game themed sets will allow for more Pokemon from the 3 generations that came after the Gamecube series.

In typing these spoilers up, I'm left with a question about wording. In the XY sets, I see the phrases "Defending Pokemon" and "Opponent's Active Pokemon" used interchangeably. What's the difference between the phrases?

Thanks for looking this over, I'm really excited to start work on this project. Leave me some feedback!

RE: Shadow Pokemon ~ A Text Based Fake Collection

I'm gonna post an update that also serves as a reservation for the second post in the thread.

Here is the Shadow Togepi line. I vaguely remember an episode of the anime where this random Togepi caused all sorts of problems for no reason and that definitely stuck out when I was designing the cards. These cards were really fun design-wise because Shadow versions of the line is almost oxymoronic, seeing how the evolutions are basically angels.

[Basic] Shadow Togepi HP40 [Y]
togepi.gif

[Y] Shenanigans
Flip 3 coins. For each heads, draw a card. For each tails, discard a card from your opponent’s hand at random. This Pokémon does 10 damage to itself.

togetic.gif

[Y] Tricky Kiss 20+

[C][C] Shadow Rush 50
This Pokémon does 20 damage to itself.

Whenever a Shadow Pokémon attacks, flip 2 coins after the attack. If both are tails, that Pokémon is now in Reverse Mode.
Weakness: [L] x2
Resistance: [F] -20
Retreat Cost: [C]

[Stage 2] Shadow Togekiss HP130 [Y]
Evolves from Shadow Togetic
togekiss.gif

[Ability] Fallen Angel
If this Pokémon is your active Pokémon and is damaged by an opponent’s attack (even if this Pokémon is knocked out), discard the top 2 cards of your opponent’s deck.

[Y][Y][C] Malicious Gifts
Put damage counters your opponent's Pokémon in any way you like equal to the number of damage counters on this Pokémon.

Whenever a Shadow Pokémon attacks, flip 2 coins after the attack. If both are tails, that Pokémon is now in Reverse Mode.
Weakness: [L] x2
Resistance: [F] -20
Retreat Cost: [C]

An BW-XY trend that I noticed is that Pokemon with abilities never have more than one attack. I edited the Meganium a little bit to conform.

Leave a comment, let me know what you think!

RE: Shadow Pokemon ~ A Text Based Fake Collection (Shadow Togepi)

It was an arduous task, but I put together 6 setlists for the Shadow Pokemon collection! It's very ambitious, but I figure I can slowly piece my way through it.

Shadow Emergence is the introductory set, featuring the basics of Shadow Pokemon.

Shadow Bloom is focused on the beginning of Pokemon XD as well as Cipher Admins Lovrina and Venus.

Shadow Cyclone is focused on the weather wars from admins Ein and Snattle as well as Pyrite Town and The Under.

Shadow Rebellion is centered around the struggle against Team Cipher from characters like Eagun. It also features aggressive Admins Gorigan and Dakim.

Shadow Inferno is based on the climaxes of the games at Citadark Isle and Realgam Tower.

Shadow Revival features Miror. B and the Poke Spots, as well as many Pokemon that were not in the Gamecube games.

These setlists are not set in stone, but they are much more stagnant than the tiny lists from before. The original post has been updated with the complete setlists.

For a spoiler update, I've done Elekid and Electabuzz. The Elekid you get in XD, Zaprong, has a reserved spot in my heart. It is one of the best in-game traded Pokemon you could ever hope to receive and it is so fun to use. Zaprong was heavy inspiration for the two.

Also, I decided to use Gen 3+4 style babies. They make the most sense and play the most naturally.

[Basic] Elekid HP40 [L]
elekid.gif

[Ability] Baby Evolution
Once during your turn (before your attack), you may put Electabuzz from your hand onto this Pokémon (this counts as evolving this Pokémon) and remove all damage counters from this Pokémon.

[L] Thunder Punch 20
Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokémon is now Paralyzed. If tails, this attack does nothing.

Weakness: [F] x2
Resistance:
Retreat Cost:

[Basic] Electabuzz HP80 [L]
electabuzz.gif

[C] Zaprong! 20+
You may choose a Basic Energy card attached to this Pokémon before using this attack. If you do, this Pokémon is that type until the end of your turn. If this Pokémon is evolved from Elekid, this attack does 40 more damage.

[L][L] Current 30
This attack does 20 damage to one of your opponent’s Benched Pokémon. (Don't apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon.)

Weakness: [F] x2
Resistance:
Retreat Cost: [C]

side note: i really need to put the accents on all of the "e's" but i'm so lazy

edit: look at those sexy accents ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

RE: Shadow Pokemon ~ A Text Based Fake Collection (Setlists + ZAPRONG!)

Interesting concept. So the mechanic of shadow Pokemon is just like the owner's pokemon during the first era. But i do hope to see more card that have normal n shadow counterparts

RE: Shadow Pokemon ~ A Text Based Fake Collection (Setlists + ZAPRONG!)

As someone who's been lugging ZAPRONG up through every generation of games to the present, I heartily appreciate the reference.

I <3 ZAPRONG. That's really impressive considering all of the struggle and hardware it takes to get a Pokemon up 3 generations. GC-GBA cable to a Gen III game, DS to get to a completed Gen IV game, another (3)DS to a completed Gen V game and then finally a 3DS with Bank to get to Kalos.

An old friend stole indefinately borrowed my copy of XD, so no ZAPRONG for me! Maybe this whole set exists for some subconscious Freudian reason

I considered making all Shadow Pokemon basic (which I guess would make more sense considering the games) but then they would be functionally identical to Pokemon SP. Right now they're Owner's Pokemon, but we haven't seen that in a while and I think it allows for a larger variety of moves and abilities without being broken.

Do you guys think the Shadow mechanic should be changed at all?

You're in luck, because the newest line is the regular Togepi line! They are among the least natural Shadow Pokemon, as the line is themed around Happiness/Generosity/not being the essence of evil.

[Basic] Togepi HP40 [Y]
togepi.gif

[C] Play Date
Search your deck for up to 2 Basic Pokémon with the Ability Baby Evolution and put them onto your Bench. Shuffle your deck afterward.

[Y] Sweet Kiss 10
Your opponent may draw a card. Then, you may draw a card.

Weakness: [M] x2
Resistance: [D] -20
Retreat Cost: [C]

[Stage 1] Togetic HP80 [Y]
[Evolves from Togepi]
togetic.gif

[Y] Bestow
Draw 3 cards. Your opponent may draw a card.

[Y][C] Draining Kiss 40
Remove 2 damage counters from this Pokémon.

Weakness: [L] x2
Resistance: [F] -20
Retreat Cost: [C]

[Stage 2] Togekiss HP130 [Y]
[Evolves from Togetic]
togekiss.gif

[Ability] Good Luck
Once during your turn, after you flip any coins, you may ignore all effects of those coin flips and begin flipping those coins again. If you do, remove 3 damage counters from one of your opponent's Pokémon (if you can't remove any damage counters, you can't use this Ability).

[Y][C][C] Jubilee Jamboree 20x
Flip a coin for each card in each player’s hand. This attack does 20 damage times the number of heads.

Weakness: [L] x2
Resistance: [F] -20
Retreat Cost: [C]

edit 7/31: changed togekiss's ability from damaging self to healing opponent

Do you think that Togekiss is overpowered? The ability alone made me nervous as I was making it. Compared with Fliptini, it's better in that it's stackable and can work on any flip, not just attacks. However, The user damages itself and Togekiss is a Stage 2 rather than a Basic. The attack has the potential to do a lot of damage, but I feel like it's too gimmicky to be broken. Thoughts?

Thanks for reading + commenting + liking :)

RE: Shadow Pokemon ~ A Text Based Fake Collection (Togepi Line)

I think the power is compensating but it still weird in my opinion for pokemon like togekiss to harm itself in such a way. Just my perspective.. The Shadow concept of evolution should really stay. But maybe there could be something more distintive other then the attack's name n the pokemon name itselft compare to the normal counterpart

I agree with what you're saying about Togekiss, but I'm not sure how to edit it and keep it reasonable. My one idea is to have it heal one of your opponent's Pokemon a certain amount of damage, and if none of your opponent's Pokemon have damage counters than the ability can't be used.

I've also been brainstorming about Shadow mechanics:

1. Reverse Mode. There are several ways to go about implementing this. One idea is that the player can voluntarily switch a Shadow Pokemon to Reverse Mode during their turn. Another is to flip 2 coins after any attack and if they are both tails (or haeads haha) then they enter Reverse Mode. As far as effects, right now I'm thinking increased damage (20?) and a poison-like effect. The only way to end Reverse Mode would be retreating or using a Cologne item on it.

2. Purification/Shadowfication. (ignore that word I just made up I can't think of an antonym for purification) I'm not as crazy about this one because I feel like it would be harder to implement fairly. Basically, you could play the parallel Pokemon beside your Pokemon and it would act like a Level X or a Mega Evolution. I feel like it would be difficult to make enough restrictions where this becomes reasonable. Like looking at Togekiss... You suddenly have the option to reflip as well as milling capabilities. You also have a potentially destructive attack as well as a spread/snipe that could be improved by the reflip ability.

Let me know what you think, I'm really interested in making Shadow Pokemon different!

healing an opponents pokemon do sound unique. With that restriction that could really be an interesting way of keeping the purity of togekiss

And how is this reverse mode defined? is the mechanic would require and extra text, or attaching a counter or etc

This could be done if the basic pokemon stay normal while only the final evolution is shadow or the shadow pokemon react like mega evolution or there could be a card or ability that let you switch the togekiss card with a shadow togekiss from your hand/deck and vice versa, this way togepi n togetic stays normal while there is a togekiss and shadow togekiss that both involve from togetic. This is more like exploring the dark/light concet but with the extra ability of a way to switch the final form[/quote]

RE: Shadow Pokemon ~ A Text-based Fake Collection (Togepi Line)

Thanks for the input! I changed Togekiss.

I decided on Reverse Mode for a Shadow Pokémon mechanic. This is what I have for card text:

Whenever a Shadow Pokémon attacks, flip 2 coins after the attack. If both are tails, that Pokémon is now in Reverse Mode.

with this as "rule book" text:

Attacks of Pokémon in Reverse Mode do 20 more damage to the Defending Pokémon (before applying Weakness and Resistance). Place 1 damage counter on any Pokémon in Reverse Mode in between turns. Reverse Mode is not a Special Condition and is not removed by retreating. If a Pokémon in Reverse Mode evolves, that Pokémon is no longer in Reverse Mode.

Do you think that's reasonable? It differentiates Shadow Pokémon in an unavoidable way and it really exemplifies their nature. Also, is it reasonable to include only the first part of the text on the card? I figure if Special Conditions can be defined away from the cards, I can do that with Reverse Mode... is it believable? If it is, I'll add the top half to all of the Shadow cards.

ALSO: It's literally been years since I've made any fakes, so if my wording is off anywhere let me know!!

Here are a few new cards as well. For Zangoose, I tried to focus on the natural side for the non Shadow and the twisted, "Zook" side for Shadow.

[Trainer] Joy Scent [Item]

Select as many Pokémon in Reverse Mode in play as you like. All of those Pokémon are no longer in Reverse Mode. Remove 2 damage counters from each of those Pokémon.

You may play as many Item cards as you like during your turn (before
your attack).

[Basic] Zangoose HP80 [C]
zangoose.gif

[C] Territorial Slash 20+
If your opponent has a Stadium Card in play, this attack does 40 more damage.

[C][C][C] Crush Claw 50
Flip 2 coins. For each heads, discard an Energy card attached to the Defending Pokémon.

Weakness: [F] x2
Resistance:
Retreat Cost: [C]

[Basic] Shadow Zangoose HP80 [C]
zangoose.gif

[C] Thug
Look at your opponent’s hand. Choose an Item card from your opponent’s hand, use its effect as the effect of this attack, and discard it.

[C][C][C] Shadow Claw 90
If the Defending Pokémon is a Shadow Pokémon, this attack does nothing.

Whenever a Shadow Pokémon attacks, flip 2 coins after the attack. If both are tails, that Pokémon is now in Reverse Mode.
Weakness: [F] x2
Resistance:
Retreat Cost: [C]

Thanks!

RE: Shadow Pokemon ~ A Text-based Fake Collection (Reverse Mode + Zangoose)

Although the reverse mode gives the pokemon 20 extra dmg. I do think that the 10 damage between turns would make the effect unpleasing. Since do you really want to attack for 20 more damage with a drawback of 20. But that is just me. I'm not very familiar of recoil effect of pokemon in tcg

RE: Shadow Pokemon ~ A Text-based Fake Collection (Reverse Mode + Zangoose)

The main thing about the Reverse Mode rule as written is that it's an inherent weakness of Shadow Pokémon - for a few, like some real tanky ones that naturally get a lot of HP, it can be a buff, but, especially considering they keep taking damage on the Bench, which makes switchouts problematic, it is a weakness. And, honestly, Reverse Mode as it was portrayed in the games was very much a failing of Shadow Pokémon to help demonstrate why fixing them is so important, so it's not bad that it's the case, it's just important to remember when writing them that they have an extra strike against them they need to counterbalance.

Though, based on Shadow Zangoose, I think you've already hit the power level they need to have to counter that concern.

On a not-mechanics related note, though, I was going through my SoulSilver and found...a second ZAPRONG. I'm terrible about this Pokémon hoarding thing, as it turns out. Do you want it? I never changed the moves or got any experience on this one. My 3DS friend code is 3007-8096-7139, and I'll accept literally anything in return.

You are officially my best friend. I'll PM you.

On topic: In the games, Reverse Mode is portrayed as negative, like a side effect of being Shadow. In XD there are no benefits, but I combined it with Colosseum's Hyper Mode (which raised critical hit ratio). I tried to channel the temporary, unnatural essence of Shadow Pokemon. They are powerful fighting machines, but they were not made to last and have a fairly high chance of decaying.

However, for balancing reasons, I will probably go easier on non-Reverse Mode recoil on Shadow Pokemon. For example, as it's currently designed, a Shadow Togepi that goes into Reverse Mode will be left with 10 HP and will be knocked out between turns, even if it doesn't attack again.

I'll add a clause where Reverse Mode is removed through evolution.

RE: Shadow Pokemon ~ A Text-based Fake Collection (PLOX)

Update! The stars of one of the first competitive decks of the Level X era! The wonderfully deep Gardevoir/Gallade Line! For the nonshadow, I focused on their sense of righteousness/loyalty. For Shadow, I shifted to the referenced destruction that they can cause.

Also, I'm going to add the "Shadow Rule" to all of the existing Shadow Pokemon.
