Today I'm going to be reviewing Virizion

Virizion – Grass – HP110
Basic Pokemon
[C] Double Draw: Draw 2 cards from your deck.
[G][C] Leaf Slugger: 40 damage. During your next turn, if this Pokemon uses Leaf Slugger the damage is increased by 40.
Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: Water (-20)
Retreat: 1

Virizion is a Basic Grass type Pokémon with 110Hp, a x2 weakness to Fire, -20 resistance to Water and a retreat cost of 1. The weakness to Fire isn't favourable with Reshiram being ever popular and the Water resistance won't really factor factor in the current meta.

What you really want Virizion for are his attacks;
First is 'Double Draw' which for {C} allows you to draw 2 cards, which will be great for deck acceleration and drawing into the cards you need.
Next there's 'Leaf Slugger' which for {G}{C} allows you to do 40 and then every consecutive turn that you use the attack it will deliver 80 damage, 40 damage for 2 energy isn't bad especially on a Basic but being able to repeat the attack at double its original damage makes it a lot more respectable.

Now I've glanced over Virizions bad weakness and that fact alone should indicate that he won't be viable as the centre of a competitive deck but for somebody whose new to the game and just trying to get a deck together Virizion could be a great starter being an early draw engine and viable attacker for the early game, also with his high Hitpoints he will hang around for a turn or 2 buying time to setup the bench for your main attacker.

Other advantages of Virizion for beginners is the fact that he shouldn't be overly hyped, which means his price should remain relatively low especially with him having 2 rarity's both as a rare holo and secret rare Full Art, of the 2 I can only see the full art having a price above £10 ($16.10 at time of typing) so for beginners it won't break the bank.

Sorry for the short article this week, if you'd like a card reviewing get in touch either here, via my profile or through the RattataJoey Facebook page.

Signing off for now

Even though it can do 80, it still isn't good.

You say 40 isn't bad? It is. Especially because it requires 2 energy.

Correction; 2 for 40 isn't bad. It's just that there are so many other better energy to damage ratios.
This is titled "Beginner's Card" for a very specific reason; it tailors well to beginners. It combines draw power and decent damage into one card that's easy to use.

well... the problem with Virizion is 'outrage'

Which is.... really the problem with anything with a damage cap below 130 or significant bulk and/or speed

Could create some solid discussion.

Moved.

I put it in Training Facility because it's an article intended to help new players with deckbuilding. Either way works, though; I'll leave it here for now.

I think there is potential in Virizion, not just as a beginner's card but something more. Maybe this along with Accelgor is just what the Grass type needed to get a good deck to come together. You could still probably fit Virizion in even if you are not playing a grass deck because this is one of the few cards with any draw power. Maybe you use him to start off a slow building deck, and retreat when you get set up or just let it get KOed to activate Twins. It has 110HP so it allows for it to withstand atleast some attack, unless it is Reshiram or Zekrom.

Just theorizing here, but there is potential in Virizion.

Please tell me you are joking about Accelgor helping grass decks; the thing is awful. Anyway, there are far better things for draw support than Virizion. Pichu, Cleffa, Relicanth, Manaphy and more all far outclass Virizion in draw support and since its damage output is so pathetic then it really is useless in a competitive deck.

^It has horrible HP and no power late-game. The HP is its main issue, honestly. Early game it does have potential though, and it's nice that the basic can evolve itself. I think it might be better off in a future format after better options for early damage (Yanmega, Donphan) get rotated.

Virizion is much worse than Cleffa or even Manaphy for draw power, and I'm not a huge fan of the other attack, but it's certainly a fun card for beginners. Any legendary basic printed BW-on is pretty OP in a theme deck style deck.
