Expanded Rare Candy vs Stage 1 Pokemon

Generally speaking, in the case of a plain vanilla Stage 1 Pokemon (weak attack, no special abilities) whose only use is the progression towards a Stage 2 Pokemon, would it generally better to use Rare Candy in the deck vs the Stage 1 Pokemon? In addition to potentially getting your Stage 2 out a turn earlier, it helps reduce the number of cards in your collection. Obviously in some situations (e.g. if your opponent is playing an item lock Pokemon such as Vikavolt V) it would be better to have a Stage 1 Pokemon, but I'm talking about the majority of the time... Just wondering what others thought.

Yes, generally it is. Using Rare Candy not only lets you play the Stage 2 you want a turn faster than normal, but it also helps reduce the number of frail Pokemon on your side of the field during the course of the game (most middle-stage Pokemon only have 80-100 HP)

They are still worth playing, though. In a deck where you're running multiple stage 2 lines, four copies of Rare Candy won't be consistent enough, so you might run one or two middle stage Pokemon for each line. As an example, Charizard ex and Pidgeot ex from Obsidian Flames work very well together, and decks that use both will usually have 4 Rare Candy, 1-2 Charmeleon, and 0-1 Pidgeotto. Like you mentioned, there are also a few middle-stage Pokemon like Evolving Skies Flaaffy or Brilliant Stars Grotle with great abilities that usually make them better than Rare Candy.

Even with just one Stage 2 line, including one copy of a middle-stage Pokemon helps with consistency. Meowscarada ex decks usually still include one Floragato and Tyranitar ex decks usually include one Pupitar. So while Rare Candy is just straight-up better than 95% of middle-stage Pokemon, they still definitely get used in good meta decks.

Evolving Skies Flaaffy has a very good ability with it's Dynamotor Ability to scoop up discarded electric energies from pokemon like Ampharos EX from a previous turn keeping your hand well supplied along with items.
