Watching the Toronto stream and people posting lists and I swear I saw people playing basic energies with sharpie being played as ace spec cards. Am I going crazy or was there a recent ruling on Ace Spec cards that allow this to happen? I’m almost positive Jimmy And Russel used a fairy as Computer Search

It's been a long standing rule if something happens to a card during a tournament that results in it being considered marked a judge can decide to make a proxy to be used in its place

It's starting to be an issue for Ace Specs as they're so old that they are starting to curl too much to not be considred marked (especially for such a powerful 1 of card)

CrownAxe has it right. Specifically, from the TCG Rules and Formats section 2.7 ("Proxies"):

If a card becomes damaged during a tournament in such a way that results in the card
becoming marked, a judge may create a proxy of that card to act as the damaged card in all
ways for the remainder of the tournament. The damaged card must be retained to use as a
reference when the proxy card is played. Alternately, if the player has another copy of that
card that is available for use, the player can simply replace the damaged card with an
undamaged copy.
In some cases, a card is damaged due to a production error. Players should do their best to
avoid playing with these cards, though sometimes that is not possible. If the judge feels that
this creates a marked-card situation, the judge may create a proxy card to act as the
damaged card in all ways for the remainder of the tournament. The damaged card must be
retained to use as a reference when the proxy card is played.

Has it ever been legal to simply play with a proxy of a card you do not own? That would be a terrible buissiness decision if so, but great for players.

No. That said, the issue with the Ace Specs during the Toronto Regional is a new issue, but handled well.

Honestly, you still would need the actual card(s) on hand.

For the record, "bad for the business" is usually also "bad for the player", at least if we're honest. Remember, actual crimes or even poor (but legal) business practices are usually only going to lead to short term gain, while in the long term, end up being bad for both the business and its customers.

"Hey! The Organized Play we've spent a good chunk of change on running to give you the customer a reason to buy our stuff? We're going to allow you to access all of it so long as you pick up 60 basic Energy cards... which you can buy used for probably under $1.00 USD. Oh, and this will be the last year of Organized Play or new expansions because, after this, we'll be going bankrupt!"
