Sorry for the lateness this week. I didn't get an article I was supposed to, so I had to scramble and scribble down an article.

At the start of BW OU playtesting, Tornadus was overshadowed by its fellows genies Thundurus, with Prankster, Nasty Plot, and great coverage, and Landorus, with Sand Force, great offensive stats, and good typing. However, Tornadus was soon discovered as a huge force with the rain overhead. In this thread, we will be discussing Tornadus' huge offensive prowess in the rain. We will also be discussing what rain would be like without Tornadus, and how much Tornadus contributes to a potential Drizzle ban.

Tornadus is nowhere near as effective without Rain. Rain is what makes Tornadus' most powerful and dangerous attack, Hurricane, so darn threatening. You may recognize the move Hurricane from last week's analysis. Dragonite is another prime user of Hurricane, and both pokemon are a huge threat. However, Dragonite is better for a bulky hard hitter, while Tornadus' speed and special attack are more for a powerful hit-and-runner. Tornadus' most viable moveset is:

655.png

Tornadus @ Choice Specs
Prankster
Timid/Naive Nature
252 Sp Att/252 Spe/4 HP
- Hurricane
- Focus Blast/Hammer Arm
- HP Ice
- U-Turn/Tailwind/Rain Dance

Oh goodness, this thing hits hard. Very few pokemon can stand in the way of STAB Hurricane, and those pokemon are fairly easily dealt with by Tornadus' other attacks. Focus Blast gets the boost from Specs, but Hammer Arm OHKOs Chansey and Bliisey while still OHKOing Tyranitar as well. Scarf Terrakion requires prediction to beat, but is 2HKO'd by Hammer Arm or Focus Blast. One pokemon that will fair decently against Tornadus is Specially Defensive Skarmory, who can take a few Hurricanes and Roost off the damage. However, even he will have some trouble. Specially Defensive Heatran can also take a Hurricane with relative ease. However, watch out for Hammer Arm. The last moveslot is what you need. Rain Dance can wreck Ninetales or Tyranitar switching in, and serves as a back up when Politoed is down. Tailwind helps slower sweepers such as Scizor, Toxicroak, or even Dragonite pick up the pace and become deadly sweepers. U-Turn is for scouting, and really helps out the scouting core of Scizor and Washtom. A Life Orb can be used if you want versatility over power.

As said before, not much can really stand against Tornadus. Politoed is a needed teammate, as without Rain Hurricane has only 70 accuracy. Bulk Up Toxicroak deals with Terrkion, Blissey and Chansey, Tyranitar, and even Dragonite when he has Ice Punch. Ferrothorn has fairly good synergy with Tornadus, resisting Rock and Electric. A spinner such as Hitmontop or Starmie is also needed to compensate for Tornadus' Stealth rock weakness.

In this thread, discuss Tornadus. What do you use to counter the great coverage and huge power of Specs Tornadus? Does Tornadus contribute to Rain's possible brokedness? What moveset have you created to catch any switch-ins off guard? Discuss!!

As a side announcement, I will be accepting art for PoTW from now on. As you can see, safariblade has already stepped up to the plate (more like I asked him to ) However, if you want to have your artwork featured in PoTW, shoot me a PM. Also, if you want to write an analysis for a future PoTW, first you must PM me stating your interest. Then, if I give you the go ahead, PM me a draft and I'll let you know if it'll work out. Thanks everyone, and happy discussing

I don't think I've posted in one of these before, so I'd just like to say that it's nice seeing some effort being put forth by the competitive community for a project so well-put together like this. So, on to Tornadus. I pretty much expected him to rise in usage after seeing Thundurus banned; he's a solid special sweeper, extremely fast, and has decent type coverage (although not as good as Thundurus). What I can't figure out is why Gamefreak denied him access to Nasty Plot, pretty much forcing him to run a Choice Specs set. Hurricane does hit extremely hard as you stated, doing decent chunks even to things like Ferrothorn, and makes a great counter to things like Conkeldurr, Virizion, etc. Although he can run a general utility set, using Hurricane, Taunt, HP Ice, and Focus Blast/Hammer Arm, you're much better off abusing Specs for a fantastic revenge killer. It should also be noted that he does make for a decent Tailwind user in Ubers, but his uses pretty much stop there. All in all, he's a decent Pokemon, and he's good at what he does, even with the limited options of what to do.

I've never posted in one of these ever. And I'm very impressed.

I don't play the VG competitively, but these articles are very interesting, and this is very well done. Can't wait to read the next one!

No love for more physical sets guys?

Tornadus @ Flight Gem
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 4 hp, 252 atk, 252 spe

-Acrobatics
-Brick Break
-Bulk Up
-Substitute/U-turn/Taunt

Although not as threatening as Choice Specs, it has no dependance on rain and will be able to revenge guys like Latios without the fear of missing. Surprises the hell out of Blissey, although you're still not getting past Jirachi too easily with this set. I think it's kinda sexy and definitely needs more love : )

Last move is pretty filler so do what you want with it, Taunt is cool against Deoxys leads.

I know we're talking about Singles here, but I would just like to mention that Tornadus is amazing in VGCs, especially last years, but it does well this year too. Tornadus in the rain is completely devastating, as I've seen it in action, but sadly like SL said there are only a few sets that this guy can run. Also to note, if using U-Turn or Hammer Arm on the Specs set change the nature to Naive/Hasty. Good article overall, and am looking forward to more of these in the future.

Like others have said, we appreciate your effort on these articles, Chillarmy. The VG forum needs activity, and that's what you're giving it. Thanks!

Anywhoo, I run a rain team, and always considered using Tornadus. My team used to catch hell from Grass types, and Hurricane Genie over there was pretty much a perfect fit. But, sadly, my team simply couldn't find the room for another revenge killer, as I already had 2 that I'm really attached to. Grass types (and Dnite until I switched to Scarf Rotom-W, instead of bulky) continued to hurt my feelings, until I realized that I could switch my Politoed to Specs and get Ice Beam. Also, I switched my Tentacruel for a Gliscor with Ice Fang and boom, problem solved (also way better coverage). No more need for Tornadus.

On the receiving end of it's wrath, I never had any problem whatsoever. Half my team resists it and the other half outspeeds and OHKO's it, so when I see Tornadus I'm like LOL FREE KILL.

Overall though, Tornadus is a decent Pokemon with a seriously awesome STAB attack. It can really only function as a revenge killer, but it is great at that from what I've seen. As for it contributing to the rain's brokenness, sure it does, but since I've had literally no trouble against it I must say it doesn't contribute as much as, say, Dragonite.

If you're using Tornadus as a revenge killer then you are simply using it wrong as Tornadus should be functioning as a chainsaw tearing through the opponent's team and softening everything up. Steel-Types and Chansey/Blissey are basically the only Pokemon that can routinely switch into Tornadus and even some of the steel types can't switch in due to typing or weak Special Defense (such as Scizor and Skarmory).

Its also important to note that Tornadus is currently UU and from what I'm told, its not doing well.

You didn't mention that if you want to run Rain Dance, Taunt, or even Tailwind, Choice Specs is not the item you should use, and you should instead go with Life Orb. I actually like Life Orb more due to it still having amazing power, but also having the ability to switch moves. If they switch in a Pokemon that resists you Hurricane, a quick U-turn can be used afterwards to keep up the momentum. Also, never run a Timid nature on Thundurus unless you decide to opt out on U-turn or Hammer Arm. Naive nature should be the main choice.

but Hammer Arm OHKOs Chansey and Bliisey

It only does 53.8% - 63.3% to Blissey with Life Orb.

typo (I think you mean Tornadus, but we all like Thundurus more)

\o/

To take care of Tornadus, I can sacrifice a Pokemon that's going zombie (in other words, make Politoed take a Hurricane to the face since it's almost dead anyways) and OHKO revenge kill with Rotom-W. That's what I did a few seconds ago (the guy didn't even switch).

And yes, I generally prefer Life Orb instead of Specs or Band, unless it's Scizor. I just find it's better, because most of the Pokemon that use it can't take a hit anyways and people switch in thinking you're choiced. Then you use Hammer Arm.

Thundurus was still OU when Tornadus was moved to UU. Without Thundurus around, Tornadus should be a part of OU when the tiers change.

Tornadus is one of the most powerful Pokemon I've used, and Flying is a solid offensive type, in my opinion. Once the special walls (A fighting type can take out all of them, bar Jirachi) are gone, Tornadus is very hard to stop without a Scarfed Pokemon.

The biggest problem I have with Tornadus is that Flying is a terrible defensive type on a rain team. You got Politoed and Tornadus, which is two electric weaknesses. Adding Starmie or Tentacruel as a spinner (since Stealth Rock is the bane of Tornadus) adds a third electric weakness, which is really bad synergy. Using Tornadus has really forced me to be creative, using Hitmontop as my spinner for example.

Thanks guys ^_^ I'm glad I can contribute and help out.

Thanks for the fixes on the set and my sucky calc, TDL. I did do this analysis in about 20 minutes and didn't have time to properly research. ^_^

You could go with Forretress as a spinner and have it with Spikes so it isn't useless.
