Nintendo 3DS Warning

I just heard this warning on the news about 5 minutes ago and those with a 3DS and are 6 and under should not be using this DS because their eyes are still developing and the 3D effect can cause eye damage. The warning is on the Nintendo site. The Japanese Nintendo site. The 3DS does come with a switch to turn 3-D on and off though but children 6 years and younger should not be using this DS. It is for children 7 years and older. Teens and Adults can use it though.:)

Children 6 and under shouldn't be playing a DS at all in my opinion. I mean seriously, who would give a DS to a young child like that?
Common sense is strangely lacking these days.

Some of my friends' younger brothers and sisters have DS's that they play with often. They were given by the parents as long as they didn't play it too often.

I've heard thats not actually proven, its just nintendo being cautious. it's the same thing as a 6 year old seeing a 3d movie.

As long as they don't use the 3-D of the DS it is ok. Those that are 6 and younger should be on the lowest possible light setting as the DS light feature is much brighter than the Game Boy Advance's backlight. They can play it if it is set to the lowest possible light setting.:)

Yeah. i don't know many 6 year olds who have $250 to spend on a 3ds either. my only fear is that the news will blow it way out of proportion and hurt sales.

The #DS is not going to be $250.00 XD. More like $200.00 Though. I have not known a DS to cost more than $200.00 XD.:)

it will cost anywhere from 150-250 it said in some news post.

i hope it costs 200 or less though so i can get 2 or 3 games.

@ xxashxx: Except this is the 3DS, not a new iteration of the original DS.

Most estimates put the 3DS at $250 USD. Very few hopefuls put it as low as $200 USD, and some have it as high as $300 USD (though I believe these are actually for non-US areas that prefer to use USD).

As for the warning, this kind of warning is actually pretty common to all video game devices, and was blown way out of proportion with Nintendo's previous attempt at a 3D system, the Virtual Boy. The Virtual Boy, however, was an extremely rushed project forced to market early to buy time for the still-in-development Ultra 64 (which was later renamed the N64 many of us fondly remember).

Given the systems raw processing power, appealing gimmicks, and backwards compatibility with DS games it very well could cost upwards of $300 USD and still appeal to a wide market. That being said, I subscribe to the belief that if it is over $250 USD, it will drop to $250 USD in time for the Christmas shopping season of 2011. Nintendo is shrewd like that. Even if it introduces at a lower price point, it still might manage a price drop if Nintendo feels it needs said price drop to maintain its hold on the industry.

I heard that the warning also said that they should take breaks every 30 minutes or something to reduce eye damage. That should really go for adults tbh as well, although I guess kids are the most worrisome.

Also, this belongs in the Video Games Forum.

dmaster out.

Yeah I remember the Virtual Boy but never got to play it because it was black and red surfaces but yeah event the Pokemon games keep you busy but not like World of Warcraft as that game takes hours and hour and hours to play. I play my DS for about an hour then I amn Wi-Fi for the rest of the day until I have to do a trade with someone but I am usually doing something so technically I don't play my DS too long but am waiting on Wi-Fi for whoever comes on. Anyway yes Kids 6 years and younger should only get a 30 minute timespan. As long as you are not playing your system for hours on end you should be ok. If you use it for online use like I do then you are not actually using it except to wait on Wi-Fi.:)

@Emeralds Hold No Hope lol.

I heard the warning online..but hopefully news etc runs the above story as well

I guess this was pretty much expected since we are dealing with 3D after all. This device is going to make optometrists rich! I know loads of kids who play with a DS and are under 6. In fact even my 2 year old cousin can play mario kart ds all the time. Not sure he understands anything but he knows how to drive properly and I guess that's all that matters at this point. :p I guess it's important for Nintendo to put out the warnings so they can say "I told you so" to any unfortunate rule breakers.

Like AJ brought up, it's Nintendo just trying to cover its legal behind and sacks of billions, doesn't come as much of suprise as new technology and supposed research are constantly cropping up (though I suppose to an extent it crushes the notion of their target demographic as stereotyped by competitors :p). In actuality defects in eye development occur gradually, where a child has to be exposed to a 3D "hazard" for a large amount of time (meaning leaving the 3D on while playing for multiple straight hours, which in itself is stressful for any person, young or old), and this long exposure has to be regular (maybe every day for a certain number of weeks/months/years, for example). It's comparable to cancer, where if you went to beach without sunblock for a single day, you'd be hard-pressed to develop melanoma right there and then, but if you went every day for the whole summer for multiple years, it'd be a diffferent story.

Nintendo is not trying to cover up anything. They are trying to help to those where anyone under 6 years are still developing and yes #D at that age can cause serious damage to the eye. Nintendo is looking out for the young. Yeah people want to have fun but #-D is too much for the young under 6 years old. At least they are doing something about it now rather than later. They must be having problems in Countries now that have a #DS so now is the time to do a warning before it comes to the U.S.A.:)

A multi-billion dollar international private corporation looking out for people??? The day that happens I might as well shoot myself in the foot :p. Pardon my brashness xxashxx, but the only people Nintendo's ever gonna look out for is its deep-pocketed shareholders – they could care less if some wretched kid dies as long as they're not dishing out the millions for lawsuits (look what happened when people were crashing wiimotes through their TV's :p). Call me a cynic all you like, and I hate to burst your bubble, but anything Nintendo does is in accordance to the fundamental principle of business: make a profit. That's capitalism for ya, whether we like it or not, and it's an unfortunate reality especially the gaming industry.

I have heard of this warning and that young children shouldn't play with the 3DS. I don't plan to get it, though they should either play with the 3D switched off or just with the older version DSs.

No one is actually sure whether or not this warning is true or not, its just kind of something to stop a potential problem until there is more research done.

also ice arceus whats wrong with you? lol the 3ds looks awesome.
