Gamefreak actually had to design Dragonite like that because they're scared of being sued under JP law if they design something that comes close to an existing fanart. Which there have to be thousands of. We've known this for a decade, it's why we don't have Mega Flygon, and yet people make more speculative arts that reduce the possible design space.
Why does it have to be Mega flygon? Why can't it be gigantamax or regional variant?

Dragonite always looked like an orange Barney with wings. It was cool but also not, so this mega seems fitting. Dragonite is a derpy, friendly dragon, nothing too serious (just don’t anger it).
I still think the theory that Dratini and Dragonair were part of something different before Dragonite still stands true, design wise especially.

No, it actually looks much more inspired, and I write so after looking comparatively at the few fan arts I had always loved of dragonite variants.
The one Pokémon made is very nice, looks harmonious and original, with neat references.
You need to learn about the inspiration.

I was initially disappointed at how minimal the changes to mega dragonite were looking like, but taking a second glance for more than a sec, I really appreciate what they did.
The seraphim, winged serpent, fairy and dragonair references blend so well together. Base dragonite looks disproportionate, while this new one is more harmonious with the bigger wings and a gigantic tail that counterbalances the bulky body.
I'm not a big dragonite fan but this mega is a win, Subtle yet noticeable changes. I only hope that the shiny is different, could take dragonair's blue.
