Ruling Lost Zone?

I'm not sure by what some cards texts mean when it says to send the card to the lost zone, is this another name for discard pile?

Not really. The Lost Zone is placed above the Prizes. Anything in the Lost Zone cannot be put back in play (Night Maintenance, Pokemon Rescue, etc.) and stay there for the whole game.

Are there any cards that are forced to go there after they are used?

Like Trainers that you play? Palkia G Lv.X can put some of your own Pokemon in the Lost Zone, but most Pokemon force your opponent to put Pokemon/Trainers/Energy there.

So nothing gets sent there unless it is instructed to?

Things only get to the Lost Zone only if the effect of a card tells you to do so.
Examples include Dialga G Lv. X's Remove Lost attack, Palkia G Lv. X's Lost Cyclone Poke-Power, Giratina Lv. X's Darkness Lost attack, and Giratina's Broken-Space Blow attack. All of these cards are from the Platinum set, though there are others that send cards to the Lost Zone (such as Absol G Lv. X's Poke-Power).
