Biweekly Haiku & Short-Poem Contest VII

Rules and Entry Information

1.) Post here saying that you want to enter and you’ll be accepted. The cap for entries is slated at twenty contestants per round, and signups will end as soon as that number has been met, the deadline for entries has passed, or the thread sits for several days without any new entries (during which private submissions may be accepted via PM to me).

2.) Participation simply requires entrants to write a haiku (a poem that follows the alternating “Five-Seven-Five Syllables” per line format) or a similar-style short poem and post it here as an entry, though submitting them via PM or Profile Message to me is fine too. All poems are due by the second Thursday after this thread has been revealed, and voting begins once the deadline has passed or all entries are made. Submissions are final, but if I feel a poem should be revised slightly, I’ll do it with the writer’s consent.

3.) Each poem for the contest must follow the selected theme for the competition. Due to artists having different interpretations of ideas, no haiku will be disqualified for writing about divergent topics so long as the theme is tied in somehow (if it isn’t, then you will be disqualified for the duration of this round). This contest’s theme is Hardships/Bad Times.

4.) Voting will run for three days and be open to all members of PokéBeach. Each person will be allowed three votes for their favorites. All participants are expected but not required to vote as well; however, you are not allowed to vote for your own (if I catch you doing so, you’ll be docked a point).

Haiku List (in order of authors entered)

1.) Broke
Oh, what a dire time!
Barely a cent to my name,
I have to make due.

2.) Heartbroken
She left me in tears
With no one to guide me now
Heartbroken, I was.

3.) Death
Why do you beat me?
My blood glistening on the floor
Fade into the dark

4.) As I walk alone
I remember the distress
Why endure so much pain?

5.) I'll hold your cold hand
And carry you through hardships
If you'll only say yes.

6.) Liquid Sadness
My tears are like raindrops
Weighing me down into a lake
Of fluid depression

7.)

8.) a freezing wind squeals
winter, my cold fireside
no warmth from others

9.) Tsunami
The wall of water
Descending upon victims
Washed to certain doom

10.)

11.) Laughter and smiles
Happiness, Joy, Warmth
I wish I had those.

12.) Futility
Effort, Practice, Time,
How we spend all to achieve,
How it never lasts!

13.) Death:
Nothing grasps and holds
Strangers' hearts it pulls like weeds
Careless, at random.

14.) I live for hardship
When I think I can't go on
That is when I soar

15.) Invisible
Shivering outside,
Only my thin coat to wear
No one notices.

16.) Invisibility
Do I get noticed?
I wish I could, just for once.
I'm invisible.

17.) A Haiku of Hardship
BOOM! Man down! Man down!
We all remember him, so
I wear a poppy.

18.)

19.)

20.)

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

I'll enter, I have a hardship haiku I made a while ago about a tornado if that counts as a hardship.

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

Anything about suffering or coping with it is basically what I mean by Hardships. So, yes, a tornado inspired haiku would likely count, mpain0.

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

I guess Ill enter

Death

Why do you beat me?
My blood glistening on the floor
Fade into the dark

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

@thefleeee: Sort of dark and more in-line with a previous theme, but I'll accept it.

Edit: I should also note that I'll allow poems that may be a syllable or two long or short in spots so long as they mimic the haiku style. I may ask to edit them slightly if theycan be modified to fit. The only thing that will warrant disqualification, though, is if an entry is completely against what the theme is about. If there's a remote tie-in, it'll be fine!

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

Thats the first thing that came to my mind :p
Thanks :)

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

In retrospect, it does tie in well. But usually if death's involved with hardship, it tends to be more about mourning a tragedy than direct-physical suffering. It's still your interpretation of the theme that counts. I can't just oust you for writing about your own thoughts on the subject.

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

This is my first time entering a Haiku contest. I guess I'll enter....

As I walk alone
I remember the distress
Why endure so much pain?

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

YUS! Haiku contest that's theme is my forte ^_^

In, and my entry should be in tomorrow.

(And if anyone doesn't know, all my other poems (which can be seen in my poetry thread, link in siggy) are dark and go well with this topic)

Parenthesis inside parenthesis FTW

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

Haikus don't have names.
I will enter.

a freezing wind squeals
winter, my cold fireside
no warmth from others

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

@Teal: Typically they don't, but people had been adding titles anyways to make them easier to identify in these contests.

Anyways, the signup and entry lists have been updated. I also added dragonexpert tentatively since he asked me the other day about entering with one of the haikus he had in his signature.

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

Confirming that I will be entering.

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

I'll be joining

Tsunami
The wall of water
Descending upon victims
Washed to certain doom

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

I'll hold your cold hand,
And carry you through hardships,
If you'll only say yes!

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

My one:

Heartbroken

She left me in tears
With no one to guide me now
Heartbroken, I was.

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

And, updated! I'll be expecting at least one or two other returning participants from before, but if they don't enter, that's fine.

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

I'm in! I'll do my haiku later.

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

I'm doin this.

Laughter and smiles
Happiness, Joy, Warmth
I wish I had those.

RE: Haiku Contest VII (Sign-ups/Submissions Taken Now!)

And, updated! I'm hoping signups fill up this time, but I'm not count on it.
