so lets say that one of use has a spirit tomb on the field and one is playing fossils. Can you still play the fossils? do they count as Pokemon or trainers??

You would not be able to play fossils as they are counted as trainers in the hand.
same thing goes for Deafen lock as well.
Be sure to note that spiritomb has to be active for trainer lock
Slightly different question, but is about spiritomb, so....
If I have spiritomb on my bench, and attach an Expert belt to it, that works.
However, if I then make spiritomb my active pokemon, does the belt still work, or does its effect get nulified?

The belt still works. Spiritomb says nothing about negating the cards (Sounds like Yugioh here), the card has already been played and thus Spiritomb does nothing to it.
