Ruling Energy Restore question

Don't rip... period

My friend and I were having an argument last night while playing a match. He played his Energy Restore and argued that because he only had 2 energies in his discard pile he could take them both without having to flip coins, and I told him he still needed to flip. Which one of us is right?

This is the text on Energy Restore

"Flip 3 coins. For each heads, put a basic energy card from your discard pile into your hand. If you don't have that many basic energy cards in your discard pile, put all of them into your hand"

I don't understand what makes him think that he doesn't have to flip.

Even if there is only 1 energy in his discard pile he still has to flip.

You are right.

EDIT: Wait ok, I see why he is thinking this.

"If you don't have that many basic energy cards in your discard pile, put all of them into your hand"
That text is what's confusing him. But you have to tell him that it means if you don't have as many basic energy cards in your discard pile as the number of heads that you flipped. Not if you just don't have 3 energy cards period.

Hope that clears things up.

Thanks for clearing that up, I don't think I could live it down if I was wrong.

I've been playing this game since it came out, and I just recently got him addicted, so I'm glad I still know the game better!
