I've been thinking, if we need to be 16/17 to go to college, what kind of stuff do they teach in schools? Do they pass exams when there like 10? It seems that trainers get money for winning battles, but what if they want to settle down and retire from training like Proff. Oak. Surely they would need qualifacations of some sorts. Plus, what if they get broke and can't win or need a debt to pay?
 
i Think its more of a career choice. and Maybe like your parents have a college fund for us, maybe it can go either way in the Pokémon world. Like for training or school. Maybe you have to pay more to continue in school, but that school would probably have more researching jobs or what not. But in your earlier years, they teach you all about caring and battling pokemon.
 
I think evolution is right. But then again, it is a cartoon, so, yeah. it is probobly a career choice
 
Education within the Pokémon world probably doesn't deviate too much from education in the real world. The usage of Pokémon within the Pokémon world appears to vary between a career choice, as tools, or as a hobby, at least from what I've experienced from the games.

For example, there are various people who have "actual" jobs that just use Pokémon to battle for fun or help around the workplace - you can see this when you fight officers, scientists, fishermen, sailors... And I'm sure there are many others I'm forgetting. These people keep the world in balance by doing the normal jobs - after all, someone's gotta do them!

In addition, you can often battle children who are enrolled in school, and they'll often comment on their courses. One schoolboy outside of Fuschia City notes that "If Pokémon were a subject in school, I'd be the best!" (or something along those lines). This means some schools don't even teach Pokémon as a course - it seems to be something they have the option of getting involved in or not, much like sports or any other optional activity in this world. However, there are schools that teach Pokémon-related courses, so it's just a matter of which school you attend.

So... To sum up what I said: Education is probably similar to the real world, with Pokémon Training / Breeding / Whatever being one of the many career choices one could make.
 
^ in all the games there is a pokemon school. they go over all the special conditions and everything.

and in there jobs like police they instead of dogs they use growlithe and instead of machinery they use machoke (remember the guy in r/b that stood there while his machoke just stomped around) i think fisherman just catch fish for there own use.
 
I have noticed that every job in the pokemon universe always leads back to the pokemon themselves. Maybe they receive an education similar to ours, but science is completely different. On a related note: maybe the trainers are actually more than ten earth years old (keep in mind that they might have a different solar calendar). Maybe they are actually around 14 to 18 earth years and have received a complete education before obtaining their license.
 
^but on the first episode ash was turning 10 when he went to go get his first pokemon.

Pokemon is not a reflection of real life. You can't look at the pokemon universe in the same perspective that you use for real life. It'd be like trying to argue about how harry potter is unrealistic because every time magic is used, a ton of laws of physics go out the window.
 
You guys are kinda just over thinking this one. School is not important, pokemon is. All jobs can be easily done thanks to pokemon, therefore they don't need an education.
 
Catutie, you missed the part about them having a different solar calendar. It could be that their "years" are different from ours (this would also explain unova's twisted season pattern).
 
Well maybe they are beyond the point of jobs. People like professors might indicate the society is welcoming higher thinking so education could be an important part of life.

the rate that they age isnt the important part, the fact that he was 10 is the important part. and if they age faster then in reality he would be about 5-6 which is even younger.
 
^I was saying that maybe the pokemon world has longer years than us, so 10 years to us could be only 6 or 8 to them. That explains why the trainers appear to be teenagers in the anime. Just remember that a year is how long it takes for the earth to circle the sun, which has nothing to do with the growth of a person.

Then again, maybe some pokemon trainers get no formal education. I mean, ash really has not shown any sign that he had any.
 
Way to diss Ash xD. My personal theory is that first there is a Kindergarden - 4th grade elementary school required thing. Then you specialize into Pokemon or other subjects. A few years later and you start your Pokemon journey.
 
Well they do have alot of jobs out there for a pokemon trainer to do that uses their pokemon to help. So Im sure they can come up with something.
 
Simple, what means to be a pokemon trainer is to not study and perhaps die from lack of education, money and food.
