The Metal Links ability doesn't explicitly say that the Metal Energy has to specifically be called Metal Energy, but what if it supplies Metal and isn't called a Metal Energy? Could you attach a Shield Energy from your discard pile to a Metal type Pokemon? It supplies Metal Energy, but it isn't called that.

The thing is that Shield Energy doesn't provide Metal Energy while it is in the discard pile. "This card provides [M] Energy only while this card is attached to a [M] Pokemon." What this means is that when it is not attached, i.e. in the deck, hand, or discard, it doesn't provide Metal Energy, meaning you can't Metal Links with it.
