the answer is obvious. take the two aforementioned equations,
y=8-x and
y=(20x^3)^(-3),
and graph them both, which i did. then simply find out where on the graph they intersect. i got two results, which explains bacon's imaginary answers.
1. x=7.91111111
y= 5.11111111
2. x~=2.71...
y~=.000000008...

the ... means it goes on nonterminating nonrepeating--the bar above the number means it goes on forever repeating that number.

P.S. what math is your sister in? i mustve skipped this cause i am past calculus and never did anything like this.

P.P.S. found an internet calculator at http://www.e-tutor.com/et2/graphing/ ... just sourcing to be safe.
 
You mean like 1 divide by 3 and would get 0.33333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333

Or I'm wrong. I studied something like this but didn't get it.

QFT. It's an irrational number.
 
My sister forgot a part of the question. The WHOLE question was:

if

X+Y=8

and

X^(3)+Y^(3)=20

What does

X^(2)+Y^(2)=?

the answer was 23.
