All-time Favorite (and Hated) Cards

The purpose of this thread is to, hopefully, get input about the cards that players loved when they were legal, and to understand why. This is also applied to the cards that you found were toxic to the game, and why.

The reason behind this is because with a group of friends we want to select the best cards of all time, and make a custom set, for fun and strategic play. We understand "best" as cards that gave an strategic aspect to the game, while not being "broken" or format warping.

Our goal is to start by making the base set, representing the first generation, trying to select cards (or redesign and adjust power levels) so each card is playable, avoiding auto-includes and fillers.

Thanks in advance.

RE: All time favorite (and hated) cards

I would say I want Mr Brineys compassion- supporter to come back. It does not work for EX but all other cards, it is a garunteed scoop-up.

RE: All time favorite (and hated) cards

Fossil Clefable. OHKO'ing Black Kyurem EX's since the beginning of time.
Also Super Energy Removal. Removing 2 plasmas from a Lugia EX is just that immensely satisfying.

Re: All time favorite (and hated) cards

Needs more Sabledonk.

And Luxury Ball.

And Dialga G.

RE: All time favorite (and hated) cards

Consistently donking DOES NOT make a healthy format.

I think provided we have Catcher, Claydol GE would be good for consistency. I also liked having Collector back in the day, but that's just me.

The Sableye suggestion was pure sarcasm. The other two were srs.

We also need Special Dark and Rescue/Call Energy in format.

RE: All time favorite (and hated) cards

I feel like just listing out all the cards that were amazing when they came out. Seriously, there were some really fun cards back then but if you compare it to the cards of today, they would just not stand up to things like Darkrai, Keldeo, and Virbank+Laser.

Pidgeot FRLG
Swoop! Teleporter
Pow! Hand Extension
Jirachi DX
Battle Frontier
Lugia ex UF + Blastoise ex FRLG + Steelix ex UF
Double Rainbow Energy
Scramble Energy
The whole Holon Engine
Metagross delta DS + Dragonite delta DS
Celio's Network
Steven's Advice
Cessation Crystal + Windstorm
Raichu HP + Exeggutor HP
Holon's Castform/Magneton/Electrode

dmaster out.

RE: All time favorite (and hated) cards

Feel like we need spiratomb back to block out some anoying trainers. That was a really fun card to play.

Jirachi DX

What is this Jirachi and why don't I have it?

EDIT: pls tell me DX is the abbreviation for Deoxys.

I need that one so badly.

RE: All time favorite (and hated) cards

Base set Arcanine. It was the first semi competitive deck I built back in the day. And was one of the best uncommon pokemon released. 100HP was big back then and so was hitting for 80 (even with the drawback of self damage).

Re: All time favorite (and hated) cards

We need something like Dialga G and something with Sableye's Impersonate. They are SORELY needed.

Also Chatot G.

It is and it was a Godsend for set up decks (including one I played during that format). Most decks would play Swoop! Teleporter to switch it out for another Basic in the deck (think current Ditto but a lot better better) and evolve it T2 as well which sped up the T2 decks like Medicham at the time.

dmaster out.

RE: All time favorite (and hated) cards

Thanks a lot for the input. Right now I'm designing the set, based on whatever the players feel like were great additions to the game. I'm hoping to finish the design soon, and it looks promising. My hope is to give every Pokemon (at least the final form) some kind of unique effect, trying not to overlap. Eventually I will post the set here, hoping to get some constructed criticism.

In the end is just for fun, and hoping to get some of the nostalgia factor.

I would like to keep reading suggestions, specially about Pokemon EX. I feel they add the wow factor, but also the drawback of costing 2 prizes. As a sneak peek I added Pidgeot's quick search effect, but now it's on the EX form, to make it more difficult to assemble and less of an "auto include", while also retaining the powerful effect.

Any feedback is appreciated.

RE: All time favorite (and hated) cards

The effect on Chatot G looks very unique. It will probably be included. But, with a couple of changes I think: It will not be "G" anymore (because I dont want to include all the "owned by this trainer" mechanic) and I'm trying to reduce to a minimum the attacks that require no energies, so I'm thinking of a cost of C. The set I'm working on in this moment only includes the first generation of Pokes, so it will take a while for Chatot to come back :/

Chatot G's attack requiring zero energy is what makes it good though, because of what it does.

No but srsly, we need a new Chatot. XD

RE: All time favorite (and hated) cards

I finished the first batch of Supporters (from Kanto). Some are part of a cycle (the ones that are type-specific) that will be completed with the other regions. Other ones are just reprint of classic ones. As always, any insight is very helpful. (These are intended to be played with the "You can't play supporters first turn" rule)

Bill – Discard 2 cards in order to use this card. Search your deck for a card and put it in your hand. Shuffle your deck afterwards.

Prof. Oak – Shuffle your hand in your deck. Draw 5 cards.

Giovanni – For the rest of your turn, you can evolve Stage 2 Pokemon without needing the Stage 1 card.

Sabrina – Look at the top 7 cards of your deck. Choose 1 and put it in your hand. Put the rest on the bottom in any order.

Misty - Remove 5 damage counters from 1 of your W Pokemon (excluding Pokemon EX).

Lt. Surge – Look at your opponent’s hand. Draw 2 cards.

Brock – Chose 1 of your Pokemon in play (excluding EX) Return it to your hand with all the cards attached to it.

Erika -Draw 3 cards. Your opponent may draw 1 card.

Blaine – Search your deck for a basic R energy. This turn you may attach 2 basic R energy to one of your R Pokemon.

Janine – Return your active Pokemon and all cards attached to your hand (excluding Pokemon Ex). Draw 1 card.

Agatha – Your opponent discards 2 cards from his hand. You discard 1 card.

Lorelei – Search your deck for a basic W energy. This turn you may attach 2 basic W energy to one of your W
Pokemon.

Bruno – Discard 1 card in order to use this card. If your active Pokemon damages the defending Pokemon this turn, it deals 20 more damage.

Lance – Discard 1 card in order to use this card. Search your deck for up to 2 Stage 2 Evolution Pokemon cards and put them in your hand. Shuffle your deck afterwards.

Blue – Reveal the top 4 cards of your deck. Your opponent separates them in 2 piles. Put 1 pile in your hand. Discard the other.

Team Rocket – Flip a coin. If heads, your opponent discards 3 random cards from his hand.

Bill's P.C. – Discard 2 cards in order to use this card. Search your deck for a card and put it in your hand. Shuffle your deck afterwards.

Prof. Oak – Shuffle your hand in your deck. Draw 6 cards.

Giovanni – For the rest of your turn, if you have a Stage 2 card in your hand that evolves from 1 of your Basic Pokemon, put that card on the Basic Pokemon. (This counts as evolving that Pokemon.) You can't use this card during your first turn.
Fixed the wording; edited to where you can't evolve on the first turn but can evolve a Basic that just came into play.

Almost the same as Brock.

Agatha – Your opponent discards 2 cards from his hand. Draw 1 card.

Hooligans Jim & Cas – Flip a coin. If heads, your opponent discards 3 random cards from his hand.
Just pointing out this effect is already in format. Not sure if you were going to make your own format or add cards to the format.

Here are my suggestions. Some of them are grammatical/rewording to make it sound like card text.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have my doubts with Bruno, since it could be too powerful if Plus Powers or the tools that give +10 damage are also included, I haven't figured it out yet. I'm planning to make my own format, and I think that Prof Oak's research is more balanced than the new Oak (less raw draw I think). Team rocket was made thinking of the Hooligans, I think it fits the rocket win/fail theme. Janine was made thinking of her ninja role, but it overlaps with Brock, though I think it could be used in some decks instead of Brock (Unless Brock proves to be more dominant). I'm also trying to stick to just the names of the characters right now, so Bill will remain Bill, at least for now.

Yeah, it all depends on what is in the format. Sometimes you have to go back and change something two or three times because you realize later that because of the other cards, it's very broken. (If only Pokemon actually did this before releasing cards.) I certainly could see Bruno being broken now that you mention it. It reminds me of a rogue deck way back in the day. It was somehow able to consistently get Shuppet, Expert Belt, and Plus Power for a T1 60, which, for the format, donked almost everything.
