ACTA Has Passed

It is extremely unlikely that SOPA/PIPA will pass, and I disagree with both of the bills. However, ACTA is a treaty, and won't shutdown Serebii or anything like that. So before you spam links to anti-government sites, at least have a clue what you're talking about.

To add to ShadowLugia's post, SOPA and PIPA are getting some changes made to them, because the internet blackout last week made it evidant to the government that things had to change. Its hard to judge the effects of a bill when we don't know what will be changed with it.

For now, just don't worry about it. :]

You know what else is a drag lately?

When you try to view a YouTube video and it forces you to either watch a commercial about Mormons for like 10+ minutes or so just to watch your video with no commercial interruptions or have your video interrupted twice by 5-10 second commercials. Pretty stupid eh?

Its not going to censor the internet. Its just going to monitor your usage; where you go and what you do there. As long as you don't do anything questionable (like download copywritten material), you'll be fine. The internet service providers are the people that will be doing the monitoring, not the government.

Isn't monitoring someone's usage an infringement of privacy?

Fixed. There's a major difference.

I'm somehow not surprised this went global. I am interested at the quote from the Czech representative saying that European nations have no say in these treaties. I really wish to find the context of this quote.

I've actually been hearing murmurings about this particular treaty for a while, but it still sounded to me like it dealt heavily in crackdowns on peddlers of counterfeited merchandise, ripoffs of copyrighted software, etc. who operate over the Internet more than anything else.

I'll admit I panicked a bit at first, but after the last link I posted I'm less concerned. Still, it's nice to get the knowledge out.

Oh...lord, that's a play on this quote.. Since, you know. DERAILED is kind of my thing. Has nothing to do with ACTA.

I wouldn't turn a complete blind eye to this just yet, though. Is it not true that some fanbases create ripoffs of copyrighted products? Any fake games, hacks, etc. in the Pokemon fandom may be brought under scrutiny (this could include Pokemon Online). However, that's if and only if they get considered bootleg software for some reason or another.

There's that, which is one of my major concerns. Copyrighted material being banned from the internet without permission basically means an extreme limit on fanbases. Fanart, Fanfiction, etc.

I don't foresee artistic stuff being prohibited, considering how Nintendo is supposed to normally okay with not-for-profit fanworks. But anyone who's profiting from the sale of unauthorized merchandise or software based on Nintendo's products may have some legal issues in the future. Again, that's if the company itself decides to take legal action, which this treaty seems to allow better now.

These will get overthrown. FAST. There WILL be riots in any country/state the law is introduced. I'm not in politics or law myself, but niether is most people I see everyday. When they realise they can't download their music or films.

Well...let's just say it won't be settled with a question and an answer.

Lol.....I sense another World War....THE WORLD IS ENDING THE WORLD IS ENDING HIDE GOGOGOGOGOGOGO

Don't flip over a stupid treaty that does nothing....nothing at all

World Governments are not all-powerful. Despite some serious attempts to crackdown on things such as piracy, copyright infringement, and product counterfieting, actually enforcing provisions of any treaty, international, and/or country-specific laws would take a lot of cooperation that will ultimately just prove to be more trouble than it's actually worth. Or that's the way I see it anyhow...

It also is going to just affect people that should have been stopped a long time ago. People that have been copyrighting things and selling it for major profit. They couldn't be stopped because the government didn't know anything about it. Now with this they can be stopped and shut down....how will it effect you personally? Nothing will happen....nothing at all with happen to people personally. If you think them looking at your internet browsing is a new thing it's not....they have done it for a while. It's how they find threats to the president and so on....

So quite searching how to make Pipe Bombs and the blueprints of the White house and live like a normal peron and you should be alright....

Oh boy, this is bad. Now the government has the power to ban you from the Internet? These people who think they know everything about the Internet in reality know nothing, and shouldn't be sticking their noses into the business of the Internet.
