Finalists Announced for ‘Pokemon TCG Illustration Grandprix!’

The finalist for the Pokemon TCG Grandprix is Yuu Nishida! Their Gardevoir illustration will be made into an upcoming promo card. The illustration won out of 5,343 entries.

Gardevoir – Fairy – HP130
Stage 2 – Evolves from Kirlia

[Y][Y][C] Dazzling Gleam: 130 damage. Heal 30 damage and remove all Special Conditions from this Pokemon.

Weakness: Metal (x2)
Resistance: Darkness (-20)
Retreat: 2

The judges commented that they liked the vivid colors of the background, how the light was drawn and interacts with everything in the landscape, and how Gardevoir feels warm and calm while bathing in the sunlight.

The runner-up was Sato Narumi’s Eevee illustration. The judges liked how it was a “slice of life” scene and how Eevee’s ear gets caught by the fence.

Japan just can't get enough Gardevoir.

Also isn't it kinda weird it refers to itself as "the Active Pokemon" instead of "this Pokemon" or something?

Considerig the other entries that made top 8, (or even top 50) this is completely underwhelming.

Beyond design, the art also has to do a good job of portraying the Pokemon's personality or how it interacts with its own environment.

This artist is undoubtedly talented, but I don't even think this was the best Gardevoir submission. The one with Gardevoir and Cherrim making a rainbow was a lot better and more memorable to me.

Putting my preference for Gardevoir aside, pretty much all of the top 50 "deserved" to win. All of the artists are insanely talented, and a lot of the artwork showed styles, techniques, and concepts that we've never or rarely see in the TCG illustrations. Everyone can have their favorites and preferences, but saying that one deserved to win over another, in my opinion, doesn't make sense.

Now, putting my preference back into place, I'm very happy that this won! It's such beautifully vibrant artwork! And it's so satisfying, just as a piece of artwork. I can't really put it into words how well this works.

But on the other hand, on a far more selfish note, I kind of wish it hadn't won. Ha ha. I don't know if this is the same for this contest, but I recall only the winners of recent art contests received the cards. (But perhaps I'm wrong?) So there are very few in existence, and if any are sold, they'd be astronomically expensive... (And I had a difficult time justifying $70-90 for the shiny Gardevoir from the Japanese Dark Explorers set. ...Still haven't bit that bullet.) But I suppose I'll have to accept the fact that I'll never own this card, unless Creatures Inc. decides to release this in a more widely available way in Japan.

My personal favorite was the Metagross one.

Just a misspell during translation, it does say "this Pokémon" and not the active :)

True enough. If it were a matter of the art alone, it definitely would be a top contender, but at the same time, the theme was to highlight an individual Pokemon, and the Gardevoir/Cherrim art fell short in that aspect.

You mean the one with the construction site? That was really great and suprisingly cute for a Metagross illustration I loved that one too.

They were all good and I was glad to see a lot of different art. When it comes down to it, I don't really mind what won, since it was up to the judges and what they liked. I'm actually quite a fan of the illustration that won, the colors are really nice. Even if it's not my personal favorite, and I'd honestly have loved for all of them to have gotten on cards (especially those Zards since I'm a dirty Charizard collector), I'm still happy for the person who won it.

See, some people can art, like these people.
    I cannot.
I can attempt to draw a Pikachu and it will end up looking like a sad waffle.

The thing I learned was TPC doesn't like birds so Ho-Oh was never going to win so the people who drew it never had a chance against fan service and the new mascot.

I love how we have all these talented artists and yet we still get cards with; clay Pokemon, yarn Pokemon and stock Ken Sugimori art Pokemon. Priorities, am I right?

Implying that it doesn't take skill and talent to make the clay and yarn Pokemon? And that Ken Sugimori is a bad artist or is unfit to be included in the TCG, just because it's stock art?
