PokeBeach’s April TCG Cup is over and the winners have been crowned!
96 players competed for the title in this exciting event. The tournament was played in the Standard format at the time — Primal Clash through Sun & Moon.
Interview with the Champion
Here’s our interview with him:
How well are you performing in Play! Pokemon tournaments this season?
I’m currently at 192 Championship Points with my best finish being twelfth place at San Jose Regionals.
Why did you decide to participate in this tournament?
My Friend Austin had mentioned he had joined and suggested I tried it out and I did.
What deck did you play for the April TCG Cup?
What kind of decks give yours trouble? Which are good matchups?
Anything with Jolteon-EX is a really bad match up for me. I really like Yveltal because it has an even matchup with most other decks in the meta and it really makes you think.
What kind of decks did you play against?
Turbo Dark, M Rayquaza-EX, Decidueye-GX / Vileplume, Vespiquen but the most memorable being Mewtwo-EX / Lunala-GX because it was very interesting and I believe the only deck I lost a match to, going 2-1 versus it.
What was your most exciting game or match?
Most exciting set was round six versus Decidueye / Vleplume and Jolteon-EX, a really tough match up for me but I was able to play around the Jolteon game one and game two I got lucky with my opponent prizing both Jolteon. I won the set 2-0.
What was your favorite card in your list?
Would you make any changes to your deck or list?
Add one more Fright Night Yveltal.
How does Guardians Rising and affect your deck? Is it still viable?
The deck gets Choice Band and Rescue Stretcher, which I think would improve the deck. Also maybe Energy Loto, but the combination of tool removal hurting Garbodor and Tapu Koko-GX seeming very playable may hurt the viability of Yveltal-EX and Garbodor.
Here is the deck list he used to win the tournament:
Other Top Finishers
Coming in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places were Anthony Bulone, Vivek, and Colin Norman (normanc). All three won a bunch of booster packs from the latest expansions, but Anthony and Colin both got a huge increase in the prizes because they are premium subscribers. You can see how many packs each of them earned at the top of this page. Their deck lists can be seen below:

Creative Deck Winners
As part of every tournament, PokeBeach’s article writers voted for the five premium members whom they felt used the most creative deck lists, and each of them earned some additional booster packs or a promo product.
theprp30, Frosstoise, Ecourts, Coolpilot, and Nobodyshero2727 each walked away with several booster packs or a specially-selected Pokemon promo product from TCGplayer.com. The decks they played were Lunala-GX / Solgaleo-GX, M Rayquaza-EX / Reshiram, Audino-EX / Altaria-EX / Zoroark, Lurantis-GX / Decidueye-GX / Shiinotic, and Umbreon-GX / Eeveelutions respectively.
