Hoopa-EX was reprinted as an XY promo. It's still legal in Standard.

That's an interesting comment saying that volcanion isn't recommended after forbidden light. Is there a reason why it isn't very good after the new set?

That's an interesting comment saying that volcanion isn't recommended after forbidden light. Is there a reason why it isn't very good after the new set?
The reason is because it is very hard to setup after 1 of your volcs go down buzzwole will kill volc because of beast ring
and ultra necrzoma beacuse easier to power up

TL;DR: "Power Creep."

Long Version:
Volcanion's niche is it's ability to consistently set-up, and take 1 or 2 hit KOs.
It's very hard to stop it from doing this, currently.
Having (baby) Volcanion, accelerating 2 energy per turn, from the first turn, is quite good!
and being able to regain these energy late game with Nitro Tank, made it a consistent threat throughout the match.

Unfortunately, Forbidden Light's addition to the meta adds in archetypes that do it better.
While Volcanion can OHKO and set-up well, it has trouble doing both simultaneously; unlike Ultra Necrozma and Buzzwole.

Ultra Necrozma-GX can hit for 100 // 180 // 260 ; fairly consistently.
It can attack, and have Malamar set-up the next attack, remaining a constant threat.
Dawn Wings is important for this, but it also a noteworthy attacker, because of how consistently the deck moves around energy.
There's also Mysterious Treasure which, for this deck, is a strictly better Ultra Ball.

Volcanion-EX cannot set-up the turn of it's attack, unless you hit Elixirs.
On top of this, it needs energy for it's ability, and cannot attack afterwards; without retreating.
This is why it's paired with (baby) Volcanion, and Turtonator-GX.

While Buzzwole-GX suffered from these same problems, it could set-up it's own OHKOs using Jet Punch.
On top of this, Buzzwole can OHKO with it's GX attack, which allows you to attack next turn; something Volcanion doesn't have.
This already made it a prominent meta threat, and people started to tech Psychic attackers to deal with it...
But, Buzzwole actually received support in this set:
Diancie - Prism Star increases your damage by 20, and has no resource requirement; making Buzzwole's OHKO threat more reliable.
Buzzwole now has Beast Ring, which can allow you to recover from losing your attacker; without losing your turn.
There was also a (baby) Buzzwole printed, which is an excellent "revenge killer," doing 120 damage for only 1 energy.

As someone who has played a lot of Volcanion, I personally feel these "new" decks are just... more reliable overall.

EDIT:

I actually played some Volcanion on the ladder, attempting to use Lysandre - Prism to remove Necrozma's energy from the discard.
Worked out okay, but in the end, they were still able to outpace me in accelerating energy (they only really need 2 energy).

vs Buzzwole, there's not much you can do.
Trade prizes, but they can accelerate with Beast Ring, and/or OHKO you with (baby) Buzzwole.
Math - Sledgehammer:
30 + 90 (effect) + 20 (Diancie) + 20 (Strong Energy) + 30 (Choice Band)
-
190 Damage

Even tried Ho-Oh, but Kiawe is too slow.
Absorption can OHKO through resist, and you're left with no attacker.

I dont know if volc is even a good deck in this meta before forbidden light even. I just found it easy to play.

Buzz and Ultra mar is 2 very strong contenders for the upcoming set and volc can t really keep up at the same pace i believe.

Check your TCGplayer account, your account should be credited.

Got it!

This month I went quality... not quantity. I got one of these. Had to chip in $8 of my own but no big deal.

Thanks Pokebeach!
