I can't help but wonder though, was the design of Mewtwo by GameFreak and Nintendo really heavily inspired by Frieza of Dragonball Z? Compare Frieza's Final Form to Mewtwo and the resemblence is uncanny at best...

There's no way they're based on one another. Their colors are similar, and they're both humanoid, but the similarities end there.
