Ruling "Trainer" Supporters vs "Supporter" Supporters

My friends refuse to go modified so sometimes they'll end up using cards that are labeled as a Trainer but are actually a Supporter. ~Example~
My question is are these treated as Trainers or Supporters? What we always get confused about is if cards like Dark Vileplume, the one from the Team Rocket set with the Hay Fever Poke-Power, would stop them from using the "Trainer" Supporters or not.

Probably a stupid question but knowledge is power, right?

dark vileplume blocks all cards as in the original game there wasn't supporters and when they came out they were considered trainers. so dark vileplume blocks all trainers/supporters/stadiums but a new cards wouldn't because the change had already happened.
