General The Totally Random Interesting Facts Thread

Or that some people like to fool others. Anyways, more facts:

No, what you call "fool" was an actual work on gullibility and the general public's lack of scientific education; if the sole fact of using a slightly more complicated name and a list of perilous-sounding-yet-widely-known characteristics of one of the most common chemical substances was enough to send people into a panicked frenzy, that's not fooling anyone, they fool themselves.

...I'm just speechless

For the love of celestia, it's water!
Regular. Old. Water. You drink it all the time. You're made of it.

Just... read that site again, and try to think if every claim they make isn't completely valid for water.

Oh you mean hydrogen hydroxide? Good ole' HOH. Chemistry wouldn't really exist without it.

Finally someone smart.

-Caillou is bald because he was originally a baby, but when they gave him hair in later books he was not recognizable. He then became the permenently bald 4 year old.
-On a Spanish news broadcast about Beyonce they interview Mariah Carrey. In the interview under Mariah's name is "Fan"(I thought this was really funny)
-Kidz Bop 24 sold more in it's first week than all of Azealia Bank's whole music career. Azealia Bank is a Hip Hop artist known for various twitter fights with other artists.
-The Baha Men creators of the master piece "Who Let the Dogs" won a Grammy. People who haven't won a Grammy include Bjork, The Kinks, and Led Zepplin.

More Irony!

Union General John Sedgwick was killed only moments after standing above his trench and yelling that the Confederates "couldn't hit an elephant from this distance"

Saint Patrick was Welsh.

The one of the only reasons that we have America is because of a game of poker.

You see when George Washington crossed the Delaware (after he scored two MAJOR victories in the North East) he was seen by a Confederate spy, who then wrote what he saw and tried to give it to his captain who was in the middle of a game of poker who then basically told him "GTFO DON'T YOU SEE ME PLAYING POKER?!!?", tucked the note into his coat pocket and never opened it. Said captain (or whatever high rank he was) died in battle the next day with the note still in his coat pocket.

Smokey the bear actually did more harm for the environment and caused more trees to catch on fire than without him existing.
You see forests generate underbrush which is what easily spreads fire and without idiots occasionally lighting a small part of a forest on fire and killing the underbrush the underbrush spreads really far and fast thus causing huge AF wild fires like the one going on now.

Think of it like this, oil is basically being produced from trees and if the tiny puddles don't get set on fire every now and then it becomes one huge Fing lake. Now instead of oil it's underbrush we're dealing with.

Scientists can pinpoint the massive fires that have started happening to the exact year that smokey the bear commercials started airing.

This sounds a lot more like conspiracy to me. Where did you get the information from?

Cracked.com it's amazing the stuff you find in it as long as you shy away from photoplasty and blog sections and you'll be fine. It's sort of like steven colbert meets a discovery documentary, they cite scientific papers and everything. I'll post the link in a minute.

I actually wrote a paper on this and it's a huge misconception. Smokey didn't do more harm than good. The reasons this seems like it did more harm than good is because of the slogan, "Only you can prevent forest fires," seemed like fires were not natural for plant life to be sustained. As you did say though, under brush does become a huge issue but that's not what starts the fire. What starts the fires is when under brush becomes dry and brittle and in intense heat, would start a fire. The next thing is that lots of coniferous trees require fire in order to reproduce. Thinks like pine trees need fire because it's one of the few ways that the seed is ever extracted without the help of animals like squirrels. When they realized this, they then changed their slogan to, "Only you can prevent wildfires," to show that fires are apart of nature and it's your job to stop the fire you created yourself from getting out of control and becoming a wildfire.

Edit: When fires are created from a suppressed fire season, they become a crown fire which basically is a fire with more than average supply of fuel to burn. In order to control this they did entice Firefighters and Farmers to implement controlled burns to ensure under brush wasn't being over accumulated when fire seasons didn't provide enough to do so.

I honestly don't think Cracked.com is a reliable source from reading a bit of their articles and a quick Google search shows they are certainly not considered creditable.

Anyways, some more facts:
- The face colour of a uakari reflects the primate’s health, with a paler colour indicating a less healthy specimen, notable in comparing wild and captive specimens.
- King Louis I of Anjou ordered the original construction of Bran Castle in 1377, which was built by choice by residents from the nearby town of Brașov, at their own expense. That's abnormal, just so you know.
- Bran Castle took 5 years to completely build (1377 to 1382). A pretty big achievement considering the great size of the castle (or fortress, depending on where you're reading).
- Bran Castle, known by many as 'Dracula Castle', is actually unlikely to be the castle depicted in the famous novel of Dracula despite common belief.

Here's at least an article from mental floss that did a thing on forest fires and here's a very interesting read from cracked which blew my mind and I only read the first thing in it. Going green is awesome and puppies and rainbows but sometimes it can MELT YOUR NEIGHBOR'S SIDING ON THEIR HOUSE!
Warning for cracked.com EVERYTHING REF!

http://www.cracked.com/article_19998_the-6-most-insane-ways-going-green-can-backfire.html

Damnit, I forgot to put that into my ipod's notes so I could do just one copy and paste of the links.

Here's the mental floss article I meant to post.

http://m.mentalfloss.com/article.php?id=12492

Also bbninjas cracked's photoplasty and blogs are about as fact checked as crap posted on 4chan, their articles and life experience sections however are fact checked and they cite their sources.

I highly doubt this. The article you posted in the werewolf thread was completely wrong besides the minesweeper section, as I pointed out to you then, and with the massive amounts of articles (I would think hundreds) being posted each day I'm pretty sure at this point the admins just scroll through to make sure there's no porn and then approve it. Hell, SilverSilent (who clearly knows a lot about this bear campaign) already just proved another of your articles wrong, and I've noticed other facts you've posted earlier in this thread are wrong too after doing a bit of research -- I just didn't say anything at the time.

Also, citing sources means nothing when 99% of these sources will be other websites, because those other websites are just as untrustworthy as cracked.com.

This is a very important piece of advice which everyone has to learn some time: Never believe anything you read on sites like cracked.com. Some websites like Wikipedia are scoured through and fact checked thoroughly, though of course sometimes falsities get through even there. Don't be one of those people who believes every conspiracy theory they read.

My Totally Random, Interesting Fact: Websites like Cracked.com and MentalFloss.com care more about click counts and ad revenue than the accuracy of their articles.

Or, to make this post more interesting and click-worthy....

The 7 Crazy Tricks That Cracked Uses to Make You Believe Their Articles!

Fact:
Cracked.com is categorised by not only Wikipedia as a humour website but also by many website critics. Even Cracked.com itself has admitted it!

(Not trying to hammer you Empoleon, I just discovered this doing a bit of research and found it funny :p)

They fact check while providing useful information and for cracked.com humor. Btw mental floss is oirely dedicated to education and debunking crap myths. Cracked has taught me about the many lives of the people in interesting and horrifying jobs (I now salute every janitor I see IRL after I read the real life experience article about what it's like to work in malls) also don't you DARE compare cracked.com to sites like diply EVER, I have learned more about the real world and history from it which I have confirmed with real teachers and professors as fact than I would in the public highschool of PTSD I went to for 5 months. So what if they cite wikipedia a few times? At leas they even try to cite sources unlike diply! Oh and they don't have "hundreds of writers" that would again be diply or some crap, their staff team is actually pretty small with 50 at most writers. NEVER EVER COMPARE IT TO DIPLY! Mental floss I know has a magizine which "isn't just written for clicks" BECAUSE YOU CAN'T CLICK ON A MAGIZINE LIKE AN IDIOT!

Cracked and mental floss are a prety vital part of why I think I stayed sane for 5 months in PTSD generating public highschool hell, which also gave me clic depression, possible stock holm syndrome and general anxiety disorder which I am now on medication for. Fact check on weather or not a website clearly exists just for click bait" or not before you make an accusation. Also cracked has cited multiple news stations ans scientific journals for their articles, so don't you dare say they only use wikipedia!

They might be classified as a "humor cite" which they did start out as but as time went on they become much more than that, they became a website full of information and mordern events with dirty jokes and that's as far as it goes now. I can give you 10 random articles from both websites each which have been fact checked and we will see which side is true or not. Btw you can fact check this one yourself, though good luck trying to sift through the propoganda for what the modern tale is. Betsy google never made the FIRST American flag, the only evidence of her doing so came from her family in sworn testimoney 100 years after she died and called BS on them. Goerge Washington was an extremely meticulous man when it came to writing down expences and not once was there anything for a first American flag from her or her shop.

From experience, I can tell you that Cracked fact-checks their sources extensively, even for their image macros (which is what I assume empoleon means by "photoplasty", since photoplasties don't require fact checking at all). The editing process is grueling and very demanding, both in facts and in appeal. For example, sites open to public edition (like wikipedia) are not accepted without a book scan or the word of an actual professional or professional site, which is a standard harder to meet than you might think; most of the internet is outright rejected as a source. All the fact-checking happens primarily in the writing and editing process, though, so in the end, they will most likely link to wikipedia since (if checked) it is bound to have all the necessary information in an easier to grasp format. Similarly, the amount of articles they have is not due to drops in quality, but the sheer amount of writers the site has; seriously; anyone can write there, which is why the publication standards are so strict.

The reason they're classified as a humor site by wikipedia and others is because they originally were (and still are) a humor site (it started in print as a competitor to MAD magazine before being revived as an internet comedy site). However, dismissing them when they make valid points because they try to be funny at the same time is fairly short-sighted; wikipedia and other places (like, for example, silversilent's presentation (I'm not challenging it, really, since he might as well be right, but he didn't really give the valid sources you say cracked lacks, didn't he?) might present their points in a more formal way, but they don't necessarily give you much more confidence.
Don't get me wrong, though; they can certainly make mistakes, and they have made mistakes; fortunately, those occurrences are rare enough that you can have a certain confidence in what they say.
The blogs, however, are personal opinions by the editors and columnists, and they're not the same as articles; many people make the mistake of conflating them. Blogs are just funny and, in many cases, food for thought, but they don't have the same investigative rigor.

Oh, just, look how neatly this connects with my previous point about DHMO! which only serves to further prove it, of course: the more formally and wordily you present knowledge is directly proportional to how easily it will be taken as truth and left unexamined by the populace. However, put some dick jokes in it, and anything you have to say doesn't matter. Don't judge a book by its cover, kids, be smarter than that.
Hell, How many of you have posted sources for your "random interesting facts" here at all? I know all of empoleon's facts come from cracked even despite the lack of paragraphs and proper punctuation, and I already proved one of them to be a result of mass ignorance and memetic paranoia; who is to say there aren't more that just didn't ring my alarms like that one did?

Thank you, and CRACKED WAS A MAGAZINE AT ONE POINT?!?!?!? *insert Hyperbole image saying "BUY ALL THE MAGAZINES" here*, and I can confirm that they are occasionally wrong just like ANY OTHER WEBSITE IS, even mental floss did not do their math in all of 2 articles and they got CHEWED THE HELL OUT IN THE COMMENTS. Oh and I forget where I learned this, I don't think it was cracked.com for once, people in general learn more when there's something funny or interesting in between learning like a dirty joke which how I have memorized so much stuff from cracked.com.

Also for more awesome facts from cracked which they have fact checked, if you pay a public highschool student $20 a week regardless of grades they actually turn out more money for the state than the $20 a week they were paid due to the way it affects their future. I'll do a copy paste of the article section here with the language cleaned up.

#4. Paying Children for Good Grades Pays Off in the Long Run

You're probably thinking that we already place enormous value on our grades. Many of us worked our ******** off for 12 years just so we could get into college to study some more. But since the average college graduate earns about half a million dollars more in their lifetime than someone with just a high school diploma, you have to wonder, do we really value our grades enough? Research suggests that we'd all be better off if we opened our wallets and paid our kids to study.

Wait, What?

This is an outrage! Nobody paid you to go to school! Those little spoiled brats should be thankful they even have school!

"You punks are just lucky we don't make you fistfight chinchillas for our amusement."

But here's something funny about minors: They a) don't like to listen to adults and b) aren't the best long-term planners. When we tell 12-year-olds to earn good grades so that, in more than five years, they can go to a place where they have to earn more good grades to have a better chance at having a great job five years after that, they had already stopped listening before we got halfway through the sentence. Kids need more immediacy in their rewards. In short, you need to bribe them.

A Harvard University economist analyzed what happened when schools paid their students to study. And guess what? The grades improved, the students were more likely to go to college and get hired, and sales of music designed to piss off parents probably rose 500 percent. But that's probably not all that surprising -- what was especially crazy in this study was that the students earned better grades even when they were paid just for showing up.

In other words: Just treat school like a job.

"Looking at these grades, I don't think this whole 'son' thing is going to work out.
However, we do have an opening at the position of 'dog'."

But why should the government pay your snotty kid not to waste his potential? Because society makes money in the long run. Better grades equal a better job, a better job means a higher income and a higher income means more money paid in taxes. It also means less chance the kid will drop out and burden society with endless bar brawls and infections from dirty tattoo needles.

So let's say we pay an eighth grader $20 a week to attend school until graduation. That amounts to a little over five grand. If she graduates, she will earn more money, which means she will pay more tax -- around $2,400 more. Which means that, within two years, we break even on the investment. Continue the principle throughout college, and it's all dollar signs, according to this chart:

145434_v4.jpg
americanradioworks.publicradio.org

This is why the District of Columbia recently announced that it would be paying kids to attend summer school. Again, it seems kind of cynical. But then again ... what are we afraid of? That we're not preparing these kids for what to expect in the adult world? Where people don't do things purely for financial incentive?

Wow that actually didn't have that much language to clean up, here's the link to the full article, WARNING EVERYTHING REF!
