The El-Tee's Custom Card Contest

Thought I might give this a toss here. I’ve been known in other places for my custom Pokemon cards, especially making specifics for friends who request them. I’ve also done a lot of Pokemon images for my own cards instead of pulling things off the net, but I'm more known for my sci-fi art images in general. Now, looking around, I’ve seen some good customs, as well as customs that need some, if not a lot of, work. So, here’s a good challenge/exercise for you Pokemon artists and card makers.

We will do a simple contest, in which one Pokemon will be chosen, and all participants will create a card based on that Pokemon. Sometimes, there are special Pokemon too, like the possibility of a shiny, Delta, or even a Pokemon that belongs to a specific trainer. Special Pokemon will be stated with traits that need to be on it.

You can use any blank out there, though I would prefer that you use FangKing’s or Cascade Gonpory’s blanks since these are the closest ones possible to the real thing. Each contest will last about two weeks so that you have time to do everything as perfect as possible (Trust me, even in my very busy schedule, it takes me roughly twenty hours in a span of two weeks to go from blank to completed card, only because I am also doing the image from scratch. If not busy, then within four hours will I have a completed piece, but that's really rare).

Criteria to be Graded

  • Artwork
If it is something that you personally drew as opposed to taking it from someone else’s gallery, then we will be looking at how well it is done (Trust me, I know most of the artists who do really great Pokemon works, so passing something not yours as your own will result in dismissal from the contest, as well as a referral to the moderator/staff for art theft and plagiarism. I DO NOT promote art stealing as I am an artist myself). If you took stock art (Official art released only by Nintendo), we will see how well you manipulated it. Artwork taken from existing cards will warrant an automatic disqualification. We want to see how far you can your imagination go (5 out of 5)

    Attacks
Are you all brawn, all beef, or somewhere in between? Or better yet, does your Pokemon have a special ability? No DBZ-style cards here, because really, that’s just ridiculous. I want to see some good attacks, and no, you cannot just copy something that already exists for an official card (Meaning you can’t use the Base Set Charizard, slap the attacks on to a blank with some art and turn it in. You can use the attacks for something else other than Charizard, but it never hurts to be a little creative. Putting in attacks that usually exist for that Pokemon is basically just doing alternate art… Where’s the fun in that?). Let’s see some nice balanced attacks on these cards (5 out of 5)

    Accuracy
Just how accurate are you in getting these customs to look like a real card? Did you line things up correctly, or just throw it in? Also, are you using the right fonts? A good custom card maker will do anything to make their card as accurate as possible. I will be grading this personally against my personal template (10 out of 10)

    Overall Aesthetics
This just sees how well the card is made overall, if it looks too crowded or not. Cards are appealing in all aspects, but namely, things that are too crowded are really annoying while those who have little to nothing are just as bad. Some things work while others don’t; just don’t over do it. This is a rule when it comes to any art (10 out of 10)

Total Points Possible: 30 out of 30

Feedback
If you do want my feedback on your cards, just PM me and I’ll send them as soon as I have time. Feedback also includes what the judges have to say, along with what tips that will make you a better card customizer. You may take these with a grain of salt, as they are mostly opinions, but trust me, even the greatest of card customizers had their beginnings.

Who Can Join?
This is opened to everyone, from beginners to advanced. For beginners, this is a good place to start learning how to make good looking cards than just throwing things you find on the net together. You will learn a lot of good things for starters. For advanced, this is a good place to brush up on your skills. Either way, it is all for good fun and some learning experience. Once we start a round, you will need to wait until the next round in order to join in.

Prizes
Not big on the prizes, but I can say that those who win the round will have their winning card completely decked out with my specialized Diamond/Pearl blank (not yet released), as well as a personalized art piece by yours truly. If you want to look at what sorts of things I am capable of, you can head here to check things out.

Judges
There is also one or two guest artists whom I have asked to help in on this. Their names will be posted once I get confirmation that they can help. If you want to help, please do PM me. I will see what you have done as your work before I decide to let you be a judge or not. Also, as a fair warning, I will be more critical than the other judges. I find that having heavier critiques from at least one artist instead of many for art pieces will bring out the highest potential in the artist, especially to those who are new to this. We will not start judging until the due date has passed, during which entries should be PM’d to all the judges to be critiqued. We will post up the works for all to see once we come to a conclusion, and others may also pass their critique on it. However, those who are not judges will not have their critique recorded in the feedback.
