Its low hp makes it easy to donk, especially to donphan, and terrakion. Its trainer locking ability is very useful, even though flippy, to crippling the opponent when played. Its useful -30 to any attack by using Fake Tears makes it challenging to OHKO early in the game with the opponent trainer-locked, though risky. It takes 80 damage to OHKO it after Fake Tears, which is good. It is also good with decks that run twins. It is usually played with Ursaring prime.

400th post!

1. What is the purpose of this card? Does it bring anything special to the table?

This version of Teddiursa does not have an attack that does damage - instead is has an interesting effect that synergizes quite well with it's Stage 1 friend, Ursaring Prime.

If you land heads when flipping a coin for Fake Tears, Teddiursa takes 30 less damage from an attack and disallows your opponent's use of Trainer / Item cards, similar to Vileplume, Gothitelle, and Zebstrika. That's it!

2. What kind of combos or decks would this card do well with?

When it comes to locking down your opponent's use of Trainer / Item cards, the three Pokemon listed above do a much better job of doing so while also providing a way to deal damage / have a different attacker doing damage. Teddiursa needs to be partnered with it's eventual Stage 1 form, Ursaring Prime.

The magic here is that Teddiursa directly compliments Ursaring - it gives you a safe way to put damage counters on (theoretically) one of you main attackers, while also shutting down your opponent's trainers for the turn. This allows you to have a bit of more breathing room, assuming you roll a heads ;).

Unfortunately, I do not believe that any decks even attempt to make use of Ursaring Prime anymore, and this is even more so the case with EX cards that have the same, if not a higher damage output with far more HP.

3. Final Thoughts

I have to applaud the creator of this card, even though it won't be seeing any play and probably did not see a lot of play in the previous format where it emerged. The synergy between this card and it's evolve are beautiful, making it actually worthwhile to consider it for different strategies and not just some temporary catcher / reversal bait before the main purpose of the card line comes out.

I thoroughly believe that more Basic (that have evolved forms) and Stage 1 cards should give something else to the player to work with. This is a prime example of one card that would have been amazing if the attack was not flippy, making itself and it's evolved form that much more playable. It would be awesome to see cards like Oddish, Timburr, Tepig, etc. do something else besides die unless they evolve in the metagame!

Card Score: 4/10 (Not so much because of it's playability, but more for the idea behind the card.)
Card Art: 4/10 (Teddybear is looking cute, but that background is.. not so much. :()
