In the Pokemon TCG, many of us have noticed a gradual increase in the power of cards. Dynamically, since Base Set, everything about them has changed. They started out with low health, some 2nd stage Pokemon having only 90 HP. Most Pokemon had attacks that could deal no more than eighty, and they had very high energy costs. They also had massive repercussions, such as recoil dealing half the damage dealt, or discarding all energies. The pictures have changed from simple drawings, to animations. (Many of which are low-grade.) Let's look at Arcanine (Wizard's Promo 6)

It only has seventy HP. That was average for a stage one of the time. It's first attack, for two Colorless energies, can do thirty, if you're lucky. Its second attack, which costs two Fire Energies, does forty. Already more powerful than its other two-energy attack, but it has effects. Discard two energies, and this attack does forty damage plus 10 more for each damage counter on Arcanine. Okay, that seems okay, but when you consider the low HP stat and the fact that you discard two energies, it's just not that much. After two discarding two energies, this Arcanine is crippled, especially since it needs low HP to hit hard.

Now we will look at an Arcanine from Next Destinies.

Seriously, GameFreak? Back in Base Set times, the only Pokemon that had 120 HP was Charizard! Then we look at its attacks. For two Energies, it guarantees to do 30 damage, and you have a fifty-percent chance to discard an energy from the defending Pokemon. Its second attack, Heat Blast, in comparison to the previous Arcanine, is insane. For just three energy, it does 70. 70. Seventy damage OHKOs the Wizards Promo Arcanine, and worse still, it has no negative repercussions.
Due to these observations, it is clear that Gamefreak and Pokemon has seriously altered the TCG and made it more and more overpowered. With this knowlege, we now bring up our discussion. What do you think of this growth in power? Is it good, or bad? Do you have a theory as to why they made Pokemon grow more powerful over time? Discuss!
