Suggestion for online tournements

So I've got to say. These online tournaments really aren't going very well. I don't think I've seen a single one actually finish. The official pokebeach one started LAST YEAR and still isn't done.

What about having an "official" pokebeach tournament live, on one Saturday like a normal tournament? The date is specified, so you only sign up if you're free then. And if you don't show, you're dropped, just like a normal tournament.

The biggest problem would probably be getting enough players, but if its an "official" pokebeach tournament, I'm sure plenty of people will play, just like last time.
 
Activity is the number one reason why they fail. People uninterested in running it and people uninterested in playing. Official really means nothing if we don't have people who WANT to play.

Most people that I know don't have an entire day free just to do that and if they do chances are slim that they're free on the day it's decided to be held. I figure most people are like that. The official one is down to top 4 and getting four rounds done in like 3 months isn't terrible.

Thats how all non internet tournaments are held and tons of people go to them. Most people I know drive up to 200 miles away just to go to a cities.

But there were a very large crowd that were interested in the official tournament simply because it was official.
 
As you could see, the interest went down fast when the tournament wasn't going anywhere and half the people were inactive.

Right but you have a month or more to get ready for Cities. That's when they release the dates. Also, at least where I live, the Cities are done by like 2 PM.

We could still do both in an online tournament.

Right. So if we try it again, but have it on only one day, people can't go inactive, and the tournament won't die off.
 
True as that is, I don't really get any enjoyment out of sitting at a computer for five hours waiting for people to finish their matches and work out problems. At a tournament, you're talking to people during rounds and actually having fun. Playing 1-2 rounds of RS every now and then is fun but it's not something I like to do a lot. I'm not sure if everyone feels that way though. I don't really see any point in arguing about this, I'm done posting here.

I think thats the first valid point anyone has made.

We're not really arguing, I'm just discussing how I think online tournaments could be made more fun.
 
I will step in and say that tourneys do seem a lot better when everybody is on at once. Last weekend, I just rounded up six people, and we had an awesome six person swiss, and we DID talk between rounds and generally had fun, and the games were really good. I think there is some merit in having it done all at once.
 
It can be fun if people who aren't playing are on the hamachi chat room messing around and joking. There has been plenty of times when I found myself on hamachi for hours and I didn't even play a single game:D

It depends on the kind of people who join. there should be at least one comedian who joins. That way when he/she is playing we can all make fun of them while they are gone.lol
