Pokemon TCG videogame

Anyone have fond memories of the Pokemon TCG game for Gameboy?

I know I do. I think it's a downright shame that Nintendo didn't keep making more of them, especially as more and more cards got released.

So if Nintendo won't do it, guess it's up to me right?

Here's an old demo of what I was working on a year or so ago:
PTCGR1.zip

Note that it is an executable, so even though I promise it's 100% safe, feel free to pass on it if you don't trust me or your antivirus software. Oh, and apologies to WPM for taking his scans without permission. I hope he's cool with it.

Anyway, that particular build of the game is at least a year old. And in fact, I'm going to be starting the game entirely from scratch for future builds.

So, now that that's out of the way, onto the juicy details of what I'm planning...

It'll be an entirely single-player experience with as good of AI as I can program. I could make it online-enabled, but I simply am not going to. Making a solo experience does no harm to Nintendo's Pokemon card sales because you can't do a lot of crucial things such as trading/playing with real people. If I added online functionality though, it might seem much more harmful to Nintendo.

Anyway, that's final. Don't ask for online functionality, period. That said, I hope to make a very enticing single-player experience. It'll be similar to the Gameboy TCG game in that you basically go around playing with different opponents. It'll be much different in the fact that it'll have many more cards. But I'm only one man, and adding in all the Pokemon cards to the game is certainly a formidable task. So I've decided on a storyline that allows me to create and release the game modularly as I add in more cards.

Here's what's happening: Your character falls victim to a time warp, which transports him back in time to when the Pokemon TCG is in its infancy. This will be the first version of the game, and will contain the Base, Fossil and Jungle sets.

I'm going to add the cards in chronological order, and release a new version of the game whenever I've completed adding in a few sets. But a new version of the game doesn't mean you have to start a new game. You'll be able to load your saves from older versions into the newer ones. And it's actually better like this, rather than having all the cards available immediately. It'll add the experience and excitement of new cards being released, which I think will be fantastic. Plus, the new versions will bring more than just new cards...

As far as what the world will be like, it'll be a lot different from the Gameboy TCG game. The world will be more like a traditional Pokemon game, so there will be a lot more to the game besides playing the TCG.
The game will start in Pallet Town, and the game world will probably extend to Cerulean. As I release more versions of the game, I hope to greatly extend the world. All of Kanto and Johto for sure, maybe more. Like a traditional Pokemon game, you'll be going around collecting badges from the gyms.

Anyway, a miscellaneous idea I have for a feature transforms the phone from the traditional Pokemon games to something much more useful. Instead of getting calls, you'll receive texts which you can choose to read when you get around to it. But that's just for convenience. The phone's purpose will be to get texts from people who want to challenge you to a rematch, and more importantly, have a card trade they'd like to offer. The card trades won't be hard-coded either, they'll be random. And unlike Pokemon trades in a traditional game, the trade isn't for some random card which you might not have. The players will offer trades for cards they know you have. Of course the trades are going to be balanced... don't expect getting dumb trade offers such as a Water energy for your Charizard, and don't expect getting insane trades like their Beedrill for your Weedle.

So that's my idea. What do you think?

I think this belongs in Fake Creations, as it's fan-made. Moving there. :3

I don't quite understand the distinction between Fan Creations and Fake Creations, as they're both fan-made and thus Fan Creations. :p

Fan Creations = Art
Fake Creations: Fake cards/games.

dmaster out.

Thanks for clarifying. That's what the descriptions of the sections say, after all.

I would love to see a game like this made. It really is a shame that they didn't continue the Pokemon TCG video games.

I wish you the best of luck!

Yeah dude. Good luck with this. Perhaps you could post some screenshots for us?

Wow! I always wanted a new TCG video game! I hope it gets finished!

(Woah! I just had a thought! If this gets really big, and had online capability, it might replace Redshark! :O)

I would strongly hope that that would not happen. There is a reason why Redshark doesn't have the pictures of the cards, with it being copyright issues. Nintendo and PUI would be happy to give Yaywalter a cease-and-desist order for not being a part of this project, and therefore would probably lose a lot of money, and God Forbid turn into a lawsuit. I remember an older online game called PTCGL, which the creator was given a CaD just because he had the real card graphics and online play, and therefore had to cancel it. I know it sucks big time, but that's how these companies can mess up a good fan-based game. [/rant]

EDIT: BTW nice GUI on the game :D Did you use Game Maker to create it?

Agreed. And yes, he used Game maker.

[programing junk]
How did you set the inventory engine up? You don't have to reveal it, but I was curious...

Yeah, I'm not going to be implementing any online functionality. I don't think Nintendo will mind a single-player TCG fangame, but one with online functionality and card images would definitely garner some unwanted attention.

It's been a while since I've worked on that dusty old version, but if my memory isn't severely damaged, I believe I used some kind of data structure, either a list or a grid, containing a bunch of three-letter strings that correspond to a card.

As for the actual inventory menu, uh... it's a mess. I could barely comprehend my own code for that menu at the time I was working on that particular build. I learned a lot from it though... ever since, I put some effort into splitting off chunks of code into re-usable scripts to make menu-building much easier.

I don't have the game maker file for that version any more, but feel free to use a decompiler on it if you're curious to look inside.

Bump for screens. Nothing too revealing... just letting you know I'm working on it.

On a side note, you may not recognize the area in that second screenshot. That's because I've decided that I'm going to be taking certain liberties with the regions, so while they'll still resemble their official game counterparts, there will some changes and additions. I'm doing this to make the regions more suited for a game revolving around playing a TCG, and to make it to where I don't have to make pixel-perfect renditions of each area.

Also, I'm considering the inclusion of fake cards. But they would have to be of high quality, and since I'm thinking I'd include one fake card in every real set, they'd have to be specially made for this game to match the style of the specific set it's being included in. In addition to that (or instead of), I could include a complete fake set. Of course, these fake cards would be more of a hidden secret for players to seek out and collect for their own enjoyment, rather than integrated throughout the game as if they were real. No stores will sell fake cards, and no NPCs (save for a few hidden ones, perhaps) will use fake cards in battle, nor trade with/for them.

Maybe you could use the DPPt tiles for this?
If you need them, I'll go & retreive them for you (from SPPF).

G/S graphics \m/

How about a battle screen?

Yeah, I'm going to stick with G/S graphics. I understand they're a bit dated, but they still look pretty good compared to the original Pokemon TCG videogame. :p

And new screens:

Expect images of more interesting elements soon. :)

Help? Thanks, but I'm not good at working with others. I think I can handle it.

Anyway, I apologize for not having anything new to show you guys yet. But here's a tease:

As much as I love the GSC tileset, I'm dropping it in favor of a more modern one so that other elements don't clash with it.
The menu is going to be completely redone as well, in the form of a highly sophisticated Pokegear model.

I'm planning some extremely ambitious features for this game... it might be too much. But I'm going to try my hardest to realize my goals for this project. Don't take this as a promise, but I'm going to try to have something new to show you guys by Monday.

AWESOME!

I cannot WAIT till this is done!

BTW, how would I decompile the game to look inside? I'm working on my Pokemon Bronze Version (which I should be posting here soon) and I would like an inventory system (like yours) to build off of. Thanks!
Oh, and, it look to me like you have pro, is that true?

BTW, did you update the walking engine? In your old demo, you had the walking engine all weird. If you wanted, I could direct you to a nice walking engine online, or post my edited version of that here. Anything that you need programing wise, I will try and help.:)

My inventory is fairly specialized, it might be too much work to modify it for your needs.

But here's a decompiler:
http://www.messy-mind.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/gmdecompiler.jar

I've got a very functional walking engine, completely different from that old one.

If you decompile that demo, you'll see why the walking engine is rough around the edges... the entire game is controlled by one object. To make my life easier, that is no longer the case.

I actually have a demo of just the new walking engine, but it's got some questionable content so I can't post it here. If anyone wants to try it out, PM me and I'll PM you a link. And by questionable content, I don't mean pornographic images or anything... just some really foul text.
